Made for the Sega Genesis in 1993 by Electronic Arts (Yes, the Madden guys), Mutant League Football was an interesting football game involving super/mutant humans, trolls, aliens, skeletons, and robots. There's an interesting story behind this game's setting, a post-apocalyptic world where radiation has turned humans into mutants, and the dead rise from the grave. The manual states that the exact causes of the upheaval have been lost or corrupted, due to alien invasion, a sloppy filing system set up by a temp, and what looks to be barbecue sauce, among other things. Quite random, but this game is fun.
Capital F-U-N, in fact, it plays like the madden games of the period, with the difference of a jump button, but it's so different. Instead of injuring players, you can kill them, taking them out of the game (if substitutions are on). In fact, it gets so common that there are parts where 4 or 5 people die during the play. Each field has the possibility of having lava pits, rocks to trip over, mines, and even having open space to float into. I mean, OUTER SPACE!!! The game prides itself on being original, and it really is.
There are special audibles which you can use to get powerups. For example, you can wire the ball for explosion, you can also get super strength, super speed, throw dynamite at other players, invisibility.... The list goes on and on. In fact, you can also bribe the ref to make him favor you(by calling stupid penalties on the opposing team), watch out though, because any one can kill the ref with an audible! There is also a season mode, that has you competing for the Mutant Bowl (Super Bowl). In fact, the Mutant Bowl losing team gets killed, while the winning team's MVP is carried into the Hole of Flame firepit, by the refs. There are also hilarious taunts by the players and the coaches during scores, end of halves, pre-game... so on.
Unlike Madden, this game is 7on7 action, not the full 11v11 action that you commonly see. There are two conferences with 8 teams each, and then the 3 all star teams (One for each conference, and one MLF all star team).
The Graphics are good for the era and the genre, while the sound is really awesome. I got to give it to EA for the intro theme, because that theme rocks. This game is also really fun to play with others. I mean, really fun to play, in fact, it's more of a party when you have everybody playing.
Depth is normal fare for football games, there's a playoff mode where you play the teams, and the story... It's a sports game, people.
