Holla.

I hope a question like this fits into this sub forum.

For those, who (yet) haven't played Skyrim, or those, who are playing it at the moment: The details of my question may *spoil* your experience of the main story of the game.

I have a problem in finishing the quest, where this dragon that I caught in Whiterun's castle is supposed to bring me to Alduin's hideout:
After promising freedom to the dragon, the quest mark (arrow) leads me to a guard of Whiterun - who's lying dead on the ground
I searched the body - no key or any "unusual" quest-like item. I suggest that I have to talk to this guy to make him help me release that dragon ... to bad that freakin' reptile killed the poor guy during the battle fought to take control over him!!

I remember that in titles like Morrowind or Oblivion, every time an npc connected with main quests is killed, a big window pops up - telling something about a kind of "broken string of destiny" to inform you that you should load the game again. And now, in Skyrim, I'm starring at this quest-arrow pointing at the lifeless body of that guard.

I don't have any save-states from before that "bug" ... what shall I do?
Anyone here who got in such a situation too?

Can it be, that the only way for me to finish the main quest is to start the game again? After 280 hrs of playing?
It would be great, if somebody knew a way out of this misery ...

Thanx for reading this!

PS: If there's a way ... the person who showed it to me will be rewarded with: 6.666 Viz!

you can either wait a few days in game for the guard to respawn OR pull the chain yourself that releases the dragon
the chain is up some stairs that is to the RIGHT of the dragon (while facing towards the dragons face)

Wow, 6.6 vizz, and i thought you could only give whole numbers.
That is very unfortunate, i had the thieves guild glitch out, i had to do it in a seperate game.
The guard just pulls a lever on the balcony, you should be able to pull it yourself.
Oh and if it works dont bother with the vizz, i dont need it.

OK, well thx for the quick reply!

I feel kinda stupid that I didn't tried something like that ... that arrow just irritated me

@ thenumberone: it's very kind of you to renounce the reward, especially in light of the fact that I only own something about 7thousand Viz. I don't need it either because I only play a few special games.

I'll give it to Flibbith, it seems that he was first

... I've never seen a glitch like that before.

Anyway, seems answered so I'm closing this.
