Megaman 64. What a classic.
I remember when I first played it as a child. I actually played the original on the playstation.
It was called the Legends series.
Some fans will look at this game and think it's a great game by Nintendo, and others will shake their head, saying the playstation version was better...
I myself stand on neither side. This game is a fantastic port of the original, and the only thing the PSX holds over it, is that Legends 2 was also on the same system. As few can say, I have beaten both Legends 1 and 2, and I would have attempted on 3 (even if it meant buying a 3DS). However, as Legends 3 was canceled, I no longer have intentions of purchasing a 3DS.
Anyway, enough of my ramblings. It's time to review a game.
Graphics - 8
Megaman 64 will forever be known as the series first foray into the 3rd dimension. This expedition however, is not a failure. You grow to enjoy the blocky textures and the odd shading at times. It may not look perfect, but such is the charm of the game. Megaman 64 was one of my own first games in 3D, and I played it far more often than any game at the time. The best graphics I feel are found near the end of game when you get to the final boss. The ending scene is also fairly decent. Not the best, but a great start.
Sound - 9
Kattleox Island has such amazing sounds. I personally love almost all the sound heard in the city (your main hub for the game). The sound isn't perfect though, and is often delayed. Sometimes you will get hit by a car, fly in the air, and hear the impact a little after the fact. Luckily, it doesn't take away from the fact the Cartridge is very limited in what it can do. In fact, I'm surprised they fit as much of the sound track on as they did. This is a case of getting a good score out of a little place on the cart.
Addictiveness - 9
It's been many years since I first played it, and I go back to it every so often. I will never tire of the citizens of Kattleox, nor the peril they all face. I play this game again and again, and every time I feel like I enjoy myself a little more.
Story - 10
You are a digger. You crash land on an island in the middle of nowhere. You need to find a way off the island. This means going underground and finding the pieces you need. It's not that simple though. Along the way you will face many a peril, including the wacky and comical Bonnes, the robots they concoct, and a crisis that could destroy the island... forever. It's the best you could have hoped for back then... and they delivered.
Depth - 8
There's a good amount to do if you choose to go 100% on it. You don't need everything to beat the game, but if you do, you will find a lot of really cool stuff. I won't spoil it, but there are several gadgets and things you can get on your second time through
Difficulty - 5
It's a lot easier with a game pad, but if you don't have one, some of the stuff you have to do can be absolute torture. I'm saying 5 based on the N64 version I have here at my house. The game has it's moments, but at the end of the day, the game is still very very easy.
Overall - 8.9
This game has aged well. It's still a classic everyone should play. I hope every day that Legends and Legends 2 get released on the PlayStation Store, but as of yet my prayers are unanswered.
There's so much I wanted to say about it, but most of it you really need to find out for yourself. If you have yet to play it, play it. It's worth your time.
