Bonk's Revenge is the 2nd of 3 Bonk games released for the 16-bit TurboGrafx 16.  Unless I am in the mood to take on a Bonk Adventure Co-op style (possible in Bonk 3), this is my Bonk game of choice.  Featuring accessible, goofy and fun platforming gameplay, great graphics and sound, a fun cartoony style and a solid caveman-head-bonking premise, Bonk is a worthy contestant in the 16 bit console wars giving both Mario and Sonic a respectable run for their moneys.

Bonk is a caveman on a quest to stop King Drool, and in true Caveman style, he does not seem to have a knack for using his hands or tools or anything.  Thus, game-play consists of either bonking things with his head, climbing with his teeth, or eating meat and breathing fire with his mouth.  In a minor but interesting twist on the mario-jump-on-their heads formula, bonk must headbutt in the air to come crashing down headfirst on his foes, or he may headbutt upwards from underneath, or opt for the straightforward approach and bonk enemies in front of him.  Also of note is the ability to hover and extend jumps by over-using bonk's headbutt ability, switching from heads-up to heads-down repeatedly, adding some variety to the platforming jump puzzles.  Also, Bonk beat Mario to the punch and is able to in-effect wall-jump by headbutting walls and ricocheting off.  Proceeding left to right, but not forgetting to explore up into the sky or down into the earth as well, Bonk proceeds Mario-style and at a Mario pace through his level.

While Mario may have Bonk beat with the fun cape-flying and Yoshi-riding and the sheer variety of Super Mario World, Bonk can keep his head held high with pride in the knowledge that his adventure is every bit as consistently fun and challenging from beginning to end.  Sonic's shallow game-play will leave him clinging to the fact that he is a bit speedier than both Mario and Bonk, while falling short in every other game-play respect.
