I think that every video game nut is pretty used to one very appealing aspect. You play one amazingly skilled character who fights through endless waves of enemies. I won't lie, it feels awesome to blast, slash, stomp, or beat down hundreds to thousands of enemies. But every once in a while, I like to search for a game (other than Mortal Kombat style fighting games) where you are on the same playing field as the enemies you face. It's you and your target, one on one, and no huge advantage given to your character that gives you epic status of skill for you. Battle Clash is one of those games. In this game, you are pitted against one enemy with a giant mobile suit created themselves in a super fast paced, missile launching, gun blasting battle. This game is one of the few SNES games made that requires the use of the Super Scope, and it is the best example, in my opinion, the SNES has when it comes to incorporating the scope to the best capabilities. If you even remotely like the idea of fighting in giant mobile suits, this is a game for you.

Graphics-10 (there is so much to talk about with the graphics, so be prepared)
This game does one thing well, and another thing amazingly in the graphics department. First off, the actual graphics are very well done. Each enemy battle machine, called an ST, are very unique. The creators did a very good job on making not only a wide variety of types of STs, they did an excellent job on the details on these awesome weapons. You will notice that almost every shoot-able part of the machines serve some sort of function for you.  What is even better, is that pretty much every part of the machines can be shot at and damaged. When you shoot a particular part enough, each of those specific spots gradually gets torn up visually, and eventually blowing up showing the mechanical insides of those specific areas. When it comes to visual damage and explosions, this game DELIVERS. Aside from the enemies themselves, each level is very unique and pretty well detailed. I am not saying that the backgrounds are the best graphics offered in the SNES, but given how fast the background is flying by during your battle, it shows that the developers worked hard on this game. When they put so much realistic details on a part that you barely see except when nobody is moving (which is almost never), props to them. The levels are as unique as the STs themselves. You will find yourself on the streets of destroyed cities, free falling down a mountain, to the deserts of Egypt. But that isn't even the best part of the graphics. This game has the most fluid movements I have seen in an SNES game, but for good reason. With how fast they made everything in this game, if the movements weren't perfectly fluid, it would be near unplayable. Play this game once, and you will know what I mean.

Sound: 10
Along with good graphics and awesome fluid graphic movements, the sound of this game is simply like a symphony to my ears. First, with the sound effects. Come on, it is a game where you battle one on one in giant mobile suits. What sounds do you expect to hear? *BOOM* *WHOOSH* *ZAP* *BANG* *CLASH*. Any other similar noises you can think of, this game probably has it, and a lot of it. It pretty much sounds like WWII being caused by 2 fighters. And one other part I love about this is the fact that even your enemy STs have their own 'voice' as one might say. Every ST has their own screams when you shoot any vulnerable area. The more vulnerable that area is, or the stronger the blast you shoot them with, the louder and more gratifyingly horrible their screams are. I love it  But what is even better is that the battle music is nothing short of appropriate for a game like this. When you pit 2 epic machine weapons against each other, you want some music to get yourself pumped. You want to know that this fight is epic. With music unique to each enemy, this game does just that.

Addictiveness: 9
Each battle is fast paced, strategic, and requires a LOT of practice. Using that Super Scope when there isn't a machine gun type of weapon where aim isn't as important is a challenge. You charge up your energy and release single blasts. If you do use any type of machine gun type attack (which is just hitting the fire button really fast) means weak blasts that you will never win with. Each enemy is highly unique from each other and requires you to develop fighting styles for each one, which just makes this game so fun to play. Some enemies have styles that are hard to find a good strategy for, making it difficult enough to not be boring. There is one flaw in this game though. Though it is fun to play again and again, it is just not AS fun as when you don't have each enemy down to a T and you can crush them in around a minute.

Story: 5
If this game has one major flaw, it is the story. There is clearly one, but so little background information is given. Why is the world completely destroyed? Who are these people that you are fighting? Did they cause the world's destruction? Why are you fighting them? You don't get any of this information withing the game itself. If you want to get the full story, you have to read the instruction manual. Luckily for Vizzed, the story description is included on the page. Pretty much, the world is in rubble, and the surviving human race has become slightly barbaric.. They make these machines, and compete in battle games, which competing results in only one survivor. Your main pilot's fighter's father died in these games, so he is taking revenge in these games, while uncovering something deeper going on.

Depth: 8
This is one time where I would give a game that does not change in literal game play a high score. Though you are always doing the same thing, your strategies for each level are going to change. The wide variety in fighting styles between each enemy is more than enough to make this game seem so new for each level. Really, enough is said on this matter.

Difficulty: 7
I would first like to point out that this difficulty rating is based off of actually playing the game on an actual SNES with the Super Scope. When you play it on an emulator, you use the mouse, which completely takes away the challenge of aiming and keeping the bazooka like gun steady. It is a LOT easier on the emulator. Back to the non emulator game, this game can definitely give you quite a challenge. At first, the enemies are fairly weak, or have very clear weak spots. Later in the game, you will notice that the weak spots are not only harder to point out, but they get smaller and smaller, making them harder to hit. When you get later in the game, the enemies not only have hard to hit weak spots, but even shooting limbs completely off does very little damage when they are not the weakness. Taking that aspect and combining that the enemies are constantly shooting multiple missiles and beam shots at you makes this difficult. Their weaponry is very fast, and you have very little time to defend yourself from them. While you are defending yourself, it is hard to look for their patterns and weak spots. Why does this not get a 10 rating in difficulty? When you do get the hang of an enemy and know when and where to strike, the enemies are a complete cakewalk. But even when it becomes easy, this game is still fun to play again and again.

Overall: 8.2
Overall, this game is an excellent change of pace from having a huge advantage over your enemies, as it puts you down on pretty equal playing fields. The graphics are great with a good variety in ST's and backgrounds (even though you don't even have time to admire the backgrounds), and the movements are perfectly fluid. It is probably the best I have seen in an SNES game. The game gives us pretty much every sound effect that we love in a high action explosive game. Even when you beat it and know exactly how to take each enemy out, there is something about it that makes it fun to play multiple times. Unfortunately, in game story is lacking. The only way you can get a grasp at what the story actually is in it's fullest, you have to read it via online or manual. Though nothing changes about the actual game play, your strategy has to change with each level, giving you a whole new experience with each level. When playing with a Super Scope on the real console instead of the emulator, you gotta learn to aim and, defend, and search all at the same time, and do it quickly. It is hard until you figure each enemy out. If you want an awesome one on one fighting experience, give Battle Clash a try.
