Well, the new Mortal Kombat dropped recently (shame on you firefox for assuming I spelled "Kombat" wrong!) and I am impressed. I posted a thread asking about peoples anticipation about it and I got a lot of interesting replies. One guy actually suggested that Kratos would make a great playable character and this was months before the actual announcement of him. Others ragged on it because they assumed it would that it would be some con fangled new story that would destroy the name of Mortal Kombat and that it would be just like some of the more recent installments of MK and had no chance of being popular or enjoyable. Some said that if you changed the names of the Characters you couldn't even tell it was Mortal Kombat (this coming from the original trailer released and completely wrong in my opinion).

My view of the game- I have played it quite a bit and have to say I am very pleased! I didn't play most of the 3D installments because like a lot of you didn't think it felt anything like Mortal Kombat and the fatalities were painfully uncreative and stupid. The new one on the other hand OOZES Mortal Kombat nostalgia for me. The characters, the arena's, the fatalities and moves and all along story line made me feel like an 8 year old me slapping away at the controller pretending to be an outworld fighter fighting for my life and purpose in a sadistic tournament to either save the multiverse, or deviously destroy it. The storyline was deliciously campy and embodied the story that I could only read in the first few MKs giving me a feeling of what I always imagined to be happening when I read the character BIOs and storylines with a little time time paradoxical twist thrown in for good measure. It was like my childhood was right there in from of me with a beautiful next gen coat of paint. From Johnny Cage's shadow kicks and cocky attitude, to Scorpion's spear and unsatisfiable lust for vengeance I was thoroughly impressed. The game didn't come without a few drawbacks though, some characters have unblockable moves which wouldn't be so bad as they keep your opponent on their toes and force them to fight back. The problem with this? Most of these moves are extremely easy to pull off (Noob Saibot's teleport grab for example can be executed with a simple "down up" button mash). Some boss battles are relentless Goro is not so bad actually kind of too easy, but Shao Kahn... OH SHAO KAHN YOU PUNK! Is one of the cheapest enemies in a fighting game ever, he can break combos at a wim and once he goes the split second before he executes some attacks he is completely invincible leaving you open for serious damage. He spams attacks that are not only ridiculously powerful but unblockable to boot (like his damn warhammer throw). And his X-Ray attack is devastating removing over 50% of your health. Understandably he is a boss so he needs to be tough, just seems like he is tough because he is cheap and not because he is skilled. Defeating the cheap punk is very satisfying though I must admit. These small gripes aside I love Mortal Kombat 9 (which I believe should have been his official name in the first place) and look forward to the MK teams next installment in this series.

What are your thoughts on the new Mortal Kombat? I would love to hear your input positive or negative
