In this SNES Classic you're playing the famous monkey Donkey Kong and his little friend Diddy Kong.
Gameplay:
Donkey Kong Country is a typical jump'n'run: your running and jumping through different levels, collect bananas, letters and little statues and you can ride on different animals (like a rhino and an ostrich (posted screenshot)). You also have to fight different enemies like Kremlings and vultures and you can choose with which character you beat them (you can change between DK and Diddy Kong all the time). You can beat these enemies by jumping on them or throwing barrels. But sometimes you cant jump and defeat enemies because you have to swim. In these swim levels (posted schreenshot) you're just able to collect things and you can't do anything against the fishes but passing them. You can collect a lot in this game: you collect 100 bananas and you get an extra life, you can collect 3 statues of one kind and you unlock a bonus level. In the bonus levels it's just about collecting little symbols in a certain timelimit(no enemies). For each 100 you get an extra life (245 symbols = you get 2 extra lives). And in some levels you're getting shot around with barrels.
Graphic/Levels:
Donkey Kong Country looks very good but not much better than for example Aladdin. The levels are well designed and look beautiful. Some of them are truely highlights, like the tree houses and the diamond levels (2 posted screenshots). The levels are easy at the beginning but then some of them get extremely hard, difficult and frustrating (like the snow levels (posted screenshot)).
Sound:
The music of Donkey Kong Country seems to be quite normal at the beginning but the tunes are getting very good in the later levels. There are some nice and harmonic tunes, especially in the underwater levels.
Conclusion:
Donkey Kong Country is a classic and rightfully so. It's a good jump'n'run with some beautiful and hard levels, two sympathetic characters and many things to collect. It's filled with some great ideas, like the ride on different animals and the bonus levels. The only big negative point is the not very interesting story but that's something unimportant.
