Since you can interact with them and you need to take care of them regularly, they could be counted as pets. Though you can name it, but it won't respond to you.

I used to have one, but it died of old age. T_T

In the matter of my own opinion a gold fish is neither a pet nor a decoration. Any living creature , weather man or not should simply be thought of as a living being. If it has a brain and heart then it has emotions regardless of its memory span.

Umm no animal should be considered "decoration", thats totally out of the question,lol. I fish is a pet.  and 8 years??? are they supposed to live that long? I had a black goldfish and a regular goldfish...but only lived 3 months.T_T

Kryptic : it all depends on the types and how you show them off. I have several. The most colorful is my Flowerhorn that has a mix of red, blue, and gold. I'd consider him to be a decoration. I also have several Oscars that you can pet. I would consider themselves moreso as pets, especially since they attempt to form a breeding pair.

After all this time I just realized the answer to my question is "both".  They are first and foremost a pet but you can also make them look beautiful with their surroundings.  So both...   And my carnival goldfish has to be about 10 years old at this point.  He's huge.  We actually had to get a bigger aquarium recently, and he's just one fish.  LOL.

I have a pet fish. He's a Beta and I named him Alpha. Yeah I know. Bad pun is bad. But he's been alive for about 2 years now. He's doing pretty good considering all of the other fish I've owned have always died within a few months. I think he's a pet and a beautiful decoration because Betas are really nice to look at. I also freak out when I think something bad might happen to him, so I care enough to call him a pet.
