Some of you might have heard of this series, some might have not... some may be more familiar with the upcoming HBO series based on at least the first book, Game of Thrones. The series is simply amazing, the characters all have a lot of depths and Martin has created such a rich history for his world.

Most of it takes place in the land of Westeros, in the Seven Kingdoms where political scheming runs rampant between the houses and soon a civil war is in full swing. There is a danger to the north that goes all but ignored and at the same time the last member of the old royal family travels the continent to the east in a plan to retake the throne that is rightfully theirs.

If you have read it, what do you think? If you have not, go and check it out.

I love it! HBO did a great job too; don't you agree? I hear Martin had his hands all over it. I love the series cause it's subtle fantasy. It's more focused on the characters and character development. Arya for example. Who's your favorite character? I also love how good his dialogue is. Dialogue is one of the hardest things for writers to make sound natural. Tyrion makes me laugh so many times.

Tyrion and Arya are probably my favorite characters overall. And yes, I think that Martin and HBO did an amazing job with the show... I read his blog so I get a lot of the little casting scoops and things like that!

I just wish that I was either in Los Angeles when they were doing all those promos for the show (like the food trucks) or that they had come to Pittsburgh. But no, only Philly, New York, and Los Angeles. Sadness.

I'm in Philly and been following rumours about the show for at least 2 years. What did they do with food trucks? Also, I'm rereading Feast For Crows cause I flew through it the first time. I like it a whole lot better this time knowing what to expect. I especially like the Jaime/Cersei dynamic. That's some true character growth. Kingslayer has grown on me.
Did you ever read Steven Erikson? Definitely worth the time.

I have not, but I will look into him.

They had these food trucks that went around giving out food "from Westeros", on different days at different times. I know they did them in LA and New York, coulda sworn they did them in Philly too... but I guess it was just the throne thing.

Bonus that Colicchio did it too. They spared no expense. I ate at 'Wichcraft in NY. Pretty cool. That article is mildly annoying the whole nerd-herd thing but its funny the preconceived notions people have about fantasy. So many people I know weren't gonna watch GOT cause they weren't into the whole "Tolkien" thing but after a few episodes I had a half dozen friends asking to borrow the series. I felt a little vindicated that people are staring to see that some fantasy writers are phenomenal authors who choose to apply their craft to that genre.

Yeah, I tell everyone I know to watch it... though most of my friends are fans anyway so I don't really have to. I kinda laugh at the people that automatically assume it's Tolkienish, and I do it to their face if I can.

Happy birthday to George R. R. Martin by the way, I saw the announcement on the SoIaF facebook page when I woke up this morning.
