http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/japan/8375276/Tsunami-hits-Japan-after-8.8-magnitude-earthquake.html

Largest quake in Japan's history so I hear. There have been two large aftershocks and on Wednesday there was a 7.2 in the same area. I hear conflicting reports on the size of the tsunami that hit... anywhere from 6 to 10 meters. Tokyo stopped, trains, subways etc all shut down. The quake was felt as far away as Beijing, China.

Video of tsunami this was made earlier when they thought it was a 7.9.

Tsunami warnings have been issued for the majority of countries along the Pacific coast.

I put this in general because I wanted the news to get out faster.

Yeah, I've heard about this on the radio.

That's insane.

Thank goodness nobody was harmed.

I'm gonna move this to the News Forum.

In Japan it's must be crazy, I was in my car an hour ago now, and even before then had the news on, I almost had to think twice about what I had heard. Here in California-west coast USA, Pacifica area has all schools closed, Tsunami alert is actually on going. As of now evacuation is voluntary to those closer to the shore.

alexanyways : Nobody was harmed? There are at least ONE THOUSAND that are dead!

I found that this report sadly has much better information and photographs than a lot of the major news reports that I have been reading. The pictures alone speak volumes about the devastation.

It's ok.

But yeah, the footage of burning debris being swept along in the water is really freaky to see. The Unites States is sending aid and additional coolant to help insure that Japan's nuclear plants do not blow... the last thing they need is another nuclear event.

Yeah, I heard about this earlier this morning.

8.9 is huge So many dead... and so much damage...

I agree, the last thing we need is an incident happening with the nuclear plants

Yeah, earlier this morning I heard the count was at 100-300, then I heard it was in the thousands later on in the day. A few of the Japanese on campus were talking about how they couldn't contact their family back home, one guy I spoke to said he was able to, and his shower room was destroyed and his bedroom was pretty disasterous as well. My mother, in Washington, was telling me about how they are all in a Flood Warning (from the Tsunamii I believe). Things are definitely going down hill, that's for sure. It's at times like this I wonder if the world is going to hell-in-a-handbasket.

I only watched a short clip of the damage earlier today, but it looked horrible. It looked as if somebody took an entire ocean and just dumped it all over Japan... it was almost like a post-apocalyptic scene from a movie or something. To think that I'm here all safe typing on my computer while probably over a hundred people my age have just died all at once... it really makes me feel guilty inside. I wish everyone in Japan luck.

This type of stuff just never ends. There seems to be one major event after another nowadays, and there's nothing anyone can do. I heard that the waves traveling on land were 30 feet high, and they tore through a substantial amount of farmland. The recovery from this might even take several decades, I just don't see how they could repair all of this in a short amount of time. Heck, it's STILL not over, what with the nuclear power plant and everything on the verge of exploding.

http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/03/12/us-japan-quake-idUSTRE72A0SS20110312

Here is the update from Reuters on the situation. Aid is pouring in from around the globe, but they are still dealing with the disaster in the form of the nuclear power plant... which while built to be in a highly seismically active area was not designed to face a quake of such power.

Suspected death toll is up to 1,700 now with thousands still missing and people still stranded while they wait for rescue.

I would like to point out that the article is incorrect in stating that this is the largest quake in the last century... there have been several that were larger, the biggest being a 9.5 in Chile in 1960. Also the Indonesia quake back in 2005 was an 8.6, though the tsunami did most of the damage there.

FrankThePunisherCastle : I tried that site but for some reason it hates my computer. Most of the other news links that I have been reading are relaying from NHK anyway though. I am going to keep trying with NHK though, since it is a primary source.

The plant did not really explode in the sense that we know it, the Reuters article I linked to in my last post goes into detail about it.

I guess it's not really anything official, but it sounds like things are going to get much worse before they get better.
