95jake1 : ok, where to start. a SMALL amount of people who watch porn become rapists. Rape porn isnt right and i dont agree with that, but you cant say that it will cause mental problems becuase some of the people who watch it have those problems. also what makes you think that rapists start that way? have u ever heard of rapists who rape cus of regection? porn is not a moral poison, millions of people watch porn, and no where near all of the will ever commit a sexual crime. and just because some rapist want to blame porn, doesnt mean that is the real reason. they blamed doom for colombine, do you beleive that violent video games make people want to kill more and more till they just do it? People like to think there are easy answers for bad things in the world, and so at one time or another everything gets blamed for something bad (Tv shows,movies,comics,D&D,games,porn,ect. have all been pegged as the cause of one bad thing or another but it is just not that simple). If it is against your personal morals that is fine, but don't act like its the worst thing in the world. (P.S. porn causes mental problems huh? some drugs can bring out or worsen schizophrenic tendencies in people so therefore, drugs are still way worse in my opinion.)

God, the way you describe about porn reminds me of one of those 50's/60's movies that talk about the dangers of smoking, homosexuals, or the danger of traffic. Also you're like what? 14? I don't think you should be warning people to destroy porn because it "hurts the mind"

I remember someone telling me that porn should be illegal, so I decided to bring up a quote that Larry Flynt of Huster once said.

"I argue that murder is illegal, but if you take a picture of it you may get your name in a magazine or maybe win a Pulitzer Prize. However, sex is legal, but if you take a picture of that act, you can go to jail."

My first instinct when I read the opening post was to say the following:

But seriously, as a person that has seen porn I would like to weigh in. Porn is interesting, some people can become addicted to it... but then again people can become addicted to ANYTHING if you hadn't noticed. People make the same arguments about video games but I don't think I would see anyone on this board say we should toss all our games. Unless you have something already mentally wrong with you, porn does not give you urges to rape people. At least I have never had the urge to do so afterward and neither has any person that I have ever known. I mostly just laugh at the horrible acting/plot (or, usually, lack thereof). Rape is about an assertion of power over another person in a very invasive way, and to simply attribute all rape to the rapist watching pornography cheapens the seriousness of such a crime. Seriously, it's like saying that all murders are caused by violent movies, it's bulls***, and I am honestly shocked and offended by your statement.

As for the "research", unless you can show me an unbiased study following the scientific method and not something you pulled off of a religious blog, I am afraid I am going to have to be disinclined to believe it.

Elara : I think a lot of the problem with what he's saying comes down to a misunderstanding of the difference between correlation and causation.

Here's a great example of how these 2 things differ.

Everyone who breaths dies. Is that correlation or causation? It's correlation. Everyone who breaths will die some day.... but breathing doesn't CAUSE death, it causes the opposite in fact (unless you're breathing in a toxic gas, but that is going beyond the point of this ).

Now, causation is something like.... gravity makes things fall to the ground. There is a direct link between things falling to the ground and gravity causing that to happen.

Now take your porn to rape cases. Are these people viewing pornography? Probably. However, I don't think you can make an argument that pornography is the CAUSE of the rape.... it might have a positive correlation to the event but it's hard to prove it is the cause.

95jake1 : geeogree is absolutely right, just because someone does something then does something else doesnt mean the two are related.
His example is perfect.
And rapists are always trying to make up excuses that simple minded people will believe, but it's all a load of bull.

iBOCK made alot of good points, and porn can be good for lonely people, married couples use it to regain their sex life (loss of which does cause people to get divorced), education, etc.

And like Elara said "people can become addicted to ANYTHING".

There is nothing wrong with porn. I'm a reasonable sexually-healthy guy. Do you want to know how much I watch? Only when I feel the need to relieve the pressure. Porn is a business. There is likely no porn that is not between consensual adult(s). Those ladies make A LOT OF MONEY. Sure it might be doing what some would consider degrading or demeaning, but many of the "actresses" have no problem with making $1000 or more likely much more for only "working" for three or four hours. a lot of what they do is done in various places across the world 24/7, it is just professionally captured and made into movies or whatever. Its just SEX ON DVD OR SOMETHING. There is nothing inherently dirty about it, just what humans have attached to it. One of the biggest buyers of porn is the American public, yet we probably attach the biggest stigmata to it. Isn't that hypocritical?

What big words? Seriously, none of the words in any of these threads are that complex.

I would say the addiction rate isn't as high as 95%, perhaps more like 60% at most. And just because a person does not get addicted to porn does not make them lame, it just means they have average willpower and can say that they do not need it (what is that great about withdrawal anyway?).

I want to see sources on these "facts" of yours, because I think they dont exist or are by people that dont know what they are talking about.

Then to change my post, unless you provide evidence conducted by an unbiased source, like a science paper or something, then it's just someone claiming their beliefs are facts, when they dont have actual proof.
I would go get links to research that proves porn can be good for some people and that it isnt anymore addictive then say, chocolate (although, chocolate is pretty addictive), but it will contain alot of those "big words" that are so feared ~sarcasm~

well, having bias is unavoidable. Even among scientists.

However, the key is understanding the bias going in to the information you're getting.

I will admit that religious bias is one of the stronger ones. Most religious people form their opinions about the way the world is and then make the facts fit their viewpoint.

Be careful how you react to what he says because he's trying to get you to realize that your information might be biased and that if you want to convince other people you need to be able to provide proof for your claims. You can't just say "Porn is bad" and leave it at that.

It's cool. Just work on doing your research before you make such an argument... especially here. If you haven't noticed, our debate forum is usually pretty active. We have a lot of opinionated people here on the board and using factual data is the one way we can really make headway in presenting cases.

Oh I'll admit I can be an ass to be sure, but I always try and be fair.
A bit contridictory in terms perhaps, but that's how I am.

As Elara mentioned, there are a few very opinionated people, so that's why I try and present detailed findings that are as unbiased as possible as well as demand it from others when they present things as "facts".
Obviously there wont be a complete lack of bias, but for example a document about sex and porn by someone that believes they are evil is going to be more heavily biased against it then one by say a research institute that just wants to find out the facts.

On this matter I could find just as many websites that say porn is good for you, but it all depends on whether or not you trust the source.
That's where the true problem lays.
Basically anyone can say anything is bad, it all depends on if the source knows what they are talking about rather then them just applying their own values and calling them "facts".
