Ok, so I just played the first FF for NES for the first time and I'm finding it extremely difficult compared to the other ones. I'm not new to FF but I was just wondering if anyone else found it difficult or if anyone has any advice for me to live longer then ten minutes! lol

The main reason it's so hard is because they don't tell you where to go. What I would do is circle a town, so an Inn is always near by, to level up then go to your destinations. Always make sure to carry health replenishing items too.

Zamiel : & snesfreak1: thanks for the advice. I literally tried 8-10 times from the very beginning and I kept dieing. I mean I had a rough idea where to go but it was impossible for me to even try because I kept encountering so many fights and they would just kill me so fast. I even made a whole team of fighters ( the strongest starting) and tried and I still got defeated lol. I mean I like challenging games and all but wow! lol

Well an all fighter team isn't the greatest of ideas XD. I usually use a Fighter, Black Belt, White Mage, and a Black Mage. All in that order too since the characters on top have the most chances of getting hit and should almost always be a fighter. After you beat it once you should try what you did with an all fighter team XD

Zamiel : lol no, I only resorted to an all fighter team when I seen nothing else was working. I haven't tried playing it since earlier, I had to take a break. I might give it a world tomorrow.

Zamiel outlined the basics well.
Stick near town, carry lots of healing stuff.
Heal as often as possible, sometimes you will need to after every single battle.
Try and fight until you are level 5-10 before moving further.
Then you can spend money on getting better equipment.

Start off with 3 Warriors and 1 Monk. This is a very expensive setup but is the best party. If you are having trouble but can get good experience then kill off all but 1 or 2 characters and level them up very high to run through dungeons.

Actually above me is correct in that it is very hard for the simple reason that they dont tell you anything really.

But i found that with a Warrior, Thief, WM, BM (that order), it isnt that bad.

You just need to make sure every time you find a new town with a inn you level up 5-10 levels. And update your equipment at earliest convenience. Better equips will do good. And always keep a large stock of healing items

Fighter: More than 2 is mostly pointless. After that, all the strongest gear is either already taken or can be equipped by something else. Gets some very weak white magic ofter upgrade.

Thief: Fast, so it's good for running away, which helps with your resource management. Quite weak til he upgrades into a ninja though. He will gain the ability to equip many more weapons and much better armor, and a bunch of good black magic.

Blackbelt: Very low maintenance and deals good damage, but fragile compared to a fighter/knight or a ninja. Also pretty one-dimensional, not having any magic.

Red Mage: Can equip good weapons and armor early in the game, but doesn't gain many more when upgraded. Can use a good selection of white and black magic, including all of the elemental spells and enhancement spells, but lacks some of the better spells like "HEAL" and "SOFT", as well as any level 8 magic.

White Mage: Practically manditory. The stronger "HEAL" spells and "LIF2" are especially powerful. Fragile and a poor attacker.

Black Mage: Really excels at killing mass amounts of enemies at once. Many of the spells are useless, however, like anything which causes a status ailment or instant death. Also of note is that "SABR" and "TMPR" are bugged and won't work at all. Stick to direct damage spells and "FAST". It will always be your most fragile member, but get's the CAT CLAWS about halfway through the game, which serve as a decent weapon.

i just beat it on nes a little while ago. it's tough.
When you start off the game buy weapons for your guys. make sure you have atleast 1 fighter, and one red or white mage. you need cure magic.

level up to about level 3, go and kick garlands ass. go back to town, stay at the inn, level up to about 5-7 and cross the bridge.

you shouldn't need to be that high of a level unless, god forbid you fight mad-ponies. they will rip you an new a**h***.
Make your way to the port town, kick the pirates ass, get a ship.
and go on the boat back to the first town and save at the in. travel straight down across teh lake to the elf town. save at the inn and level up on asps and spiders to about level 9

the main problem with that game is that leveling up takes so damn long!
it will drive you insane sometimes. Especially if you level up. you are going back to town to save and then you fight ghouls which turn your party to stone. Game over!

Good luck

I actually found that using 2 Fighters, a B. Mage and a W.Mage were excellent. You have two tanks to take the damage and the weapons and armor that they can get are the most powerful in the game. Although, if I'm not mistaken, the Murasame (or the Masamune) that you can get in the last dungeon might be able to be equipped by the thief. When you have that AND the Xcalibur in action the last boss is pretty easy to take down. The two mages eventually get the best spells in the game, so having both of them makes for an excellent advantage.
