Play Station released a bunch of baseball games for the Play Station One a few were even made for not just PS one but PS 2. MLB 2001 was the 4th installment in PS 989 sports MLB series. The game was released in early 2000. This is when the MLB series started getting good. I have this game and I enjoy it so today I'm going to be doing a walkthrough of this game.

When you start the game you will have several options. If you want to trade players then click on general manager and trade players. You can also create players. You can create up to 24 players. After creating the players they will enter the free agent pool. You can then go to free agents and assign the created players to your respective team.

Player stats are based on the 1999 season. Team stats are also based on the 1999 season. Created players will not have any stats. The goal is to build your team and try to get them into the postseason as well as win the World Series. How you do that is entirely up to you.

Note when creating players you can choose a batting stance based off of a major league player. For position players the categories are speed, fielding, reaction, run, fielding, clutch, power and batting you have only so many points so use them wisely. When creating a pitcher you can choose a delivery of some of the top pitchers in the game. For starting pitchers I recommend the ERA and Stamina to be 88-91, Relief pitchers I recommend for ERA 83-85 and stamina 88-91. Closers I recommend Stamina 80-82 and ERA over 95. You can choose up to 4 pitches for your pitchers. The options are fastball, knuckle, split, sinker, slider, screw ball, and curve ball.

You can then start the game from their you can pick regular season, spring training mode or home run derby. MLB 2001 introduced some modes to the MLB series video games. It introduced the Spring Training Mode. In the Spring Training mode you get to create a player and hope they make the team roster. If you have a good day in the game you can add points to your player.

Home Run Derby you can choose up to so many players. As the name applies the goal here is to hit home runs and win the home run derby.

Season you can start its a standard 162 game season just like a regular season. Once you choose your team you can put your team in a different division via relignment make trades under general manager and sign free agents. If your team makes the playoffs you can guide your team to the World Series.

It should be noted your team's stats are based off the 1999 season. Here are the teams 1999 standings.

NL East

Braves 103-59 record
Mets 97-65 record
Phillies 77-85 record
Expos 68-94 record
Marlins 64-98 record

NL Central (Houston was a member of the NL until after 2012)

1. Astros 97-65 record
2. Reds 96-66 Record
3. Pirates 78-83 record
4. Cardinals 75-87 record
5. Brewers 74-87 record
6. Cubs 67-95 record.

NL West

1. Diamondbacks 100-62 record
2. Giants 86-76 record
3. Dodgers 77-85 record
4. Padres 74-88 record
5. Rockies 72-90 record

AL East

1. Yankees 98-64 record
2. Red Sox 94-68 record.
3. Toronto 84-78 record
4. Orioles 78-84 record
5. Rays 69-93 record

AL Central
1. Guardians/ Indians 97-65 record
2. White Sox 75-86 record
3. Tigers 69-92 record
4. Royals 64-97 record
5. Twins 63-98 record

AL West
1. Rangers 95-67 record
2. Oakland 87-75 record
3. Mariners 79-83 record
4. Angels 70-92 record.

It should be noted each league has 4 play off teams 3 division winners and 1 wild card. That was the playoff format when this game was made. It is not like today's game were you have 3 division winners and 3 wild cards.

I also want to add if your team made a lot of errors in the 1999 season that will sometimes be reflected in this game. If your team was horrible at pitching your team may give up more home runs. If your team had a lot of offense it will be easy to get hits.

In summary, this is my guide of MLB 2001. This game came out as I stated in 2000 just before the 2000 season. This game introduced new features that I covered. If you are having trouble with this game, new to this game, or need a refresher on how to play it. I hope this guide helps you. This concludes my guide of MLB 2001.
