I am a huge baseball fan and I had some of the PS One games. I had a lot of the MLB series. I had 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2005. 2002 and 2003 are two of my favorites. I got MLB 2002 right when it was released, so today I'm going to be reviewing it.

Plot- Like most sports games there is not much of a plot. Basically its 2001 and its a new baseball season. The goal is to build your team and guide your respective team to the World Series. Can you build and guide your team to a National Championship. In order to do so you must play through an entire major league season.

It should be noted there are other side projects you can play in this game. You can compete in spring training or the home run derby.

Therefore, I give the plot a 4. Its not like a Mega Man or Mario game were there is a story line. It is a sports game but trying to build your team counts for something so I think 4 seems about right.

Graphics and Controls- The graphics in this game are amazing and a huge upgrade from MLB 2001, which had great graphics. The players are not blurry. The stadiums look like they do in real life. Also the players look real. When the sky is over cast while playing a game is a nice touch as well.

The controls are amazing and do not appear to lag or be sluggish. Sometimes in MLB 2000 and 2001 the controls could slow down a little bit. That is not an issue in this game. In my opinion 2002 and 2003 had the best graphics and controls during a baseball game. I give the graphics a very solid 9 out of 10. What keeps me from giving it a 10 is ever once in a while the game can sometimes lock up but this is very very rare though. I have played this game several times and have only had it happen a few times.

Sound- MLB 2002 really shines in the sound. The previous game had amazing sound. Some of the earlier games the sound could get fuzzy at times. That is no longer the case in MLB 2002 or even the next game 2003. The broadcasters in this game are legendary broadcasters Dave Campbell and Vin Scully. Let me say they sound like they did in real life. I love how when you hit a home run the bat makes a cracking sound like it would do in an actual game. Also having the players boo you if you hit a home run against the home team is a nice touch. Overall, I give the sound a perfect 10 out of 10 it does not get much better than this.

Replay Value- This along with 2003 is one of my favorite base ball games. I play this one a lot. This game came out in early 2001. Here it is in 2025 and I still play this game. The game is just that good. The graphics, sound, and depth make this game special. The only game I play more in these type of games is MLB 2003.

Depth- The Depth is surprisingly high in these types of games. You can build your team and play as them. If you are like me and have several teams it is fun to play the game using a different team. The season is 162 games just like a regular baseball season. If you get your team to the playoffs that is also a bonus. There are also side games as well. You can create a player and have them try to make the spring training roster in the spring training games. You can also participate in the home run derby.

Overall I give the depth a solid 9 out of 10. I give the depth a high rating due to the long season, and side games. Therefore, I think 9 out of 10 is great.

Difficulty- It is really hard to rate these types of games mainly because this is a sports game its not like a Mega Man or Mario game.

However, it should be noted the stats are based off the 2000 season. If your team committed a lot of errors in the actual 2000 season that will show up here. Players may drop balls or over throw balls. If your respective team gave up a lot of home runs in the 2000 season, that will be reflected even in this game no matter who you put on your team.

On the other hand, you can put any player you want on your team. YOu can upgrade your team, and put your favorite players on the game. Second, you can even create players. So you can make the game easy on yourself. Therefore, considering all of this I think a 6 out of 10 is just right for this type of game.

Overall- I really liked this game it and MLB 2003 are two of my favorite baseball games. I played this one a lot, and here it is and I still play this game. I love to build my teams up. Also getting a chance to play as past players is a huge bonus. Moreover, if your favorite player from today's era is not on your respective team you can create him. I often do that in this game to go along with my favorite past players. I'm so glad that this game gives players the option to play as players from 2000 and new ones that are active today.

The graphics and sound in this game are amazing. In my opinion MLB 2002 showed what the PS could really do concerning these types of games. The only game that tops it is 2003.

I give MLB 2002 a very solid 9.5. The only flaws in this game are minor. The plot suffers but this is a sports game so its to be expected. The Glitch I mentioned is very rare and chances are it will not happen to you. If it does it usually does not last long. Would I recommend this game? The answer is yes I would. This is a good game to introduce a new sports game player. Plus this game is just solid and very fun to play. They do not make games like MLB 2002 and MLB 2003 like they used too. Therefore, a solid 9.5 is about right for this game.

In conclusion, A very fun and solid baseball sports game. As I have stated its one of my very favorite sports game. After this game came out I was hoping they would make another one as good as this one and thankfully they did in MLB 2003. It was well worth getting this game when it came out. Now it will be worth it for you to play due to the reasons I mentioned. This concludes my review.
