When those planes was shooting at the top of the Atari state building and the paddle finally fell it really was E.T. that killed the beast. But that's for a different time and this is for the time of the Pong, when the Pong still roamed the earth far and wide. Really this is just going to me be doing a whole lot of yapping about Pong as not very much can be said about Pong then ya hit the dot left to right and right to make your opponent miss. But the original Pong Arcade Machine first came out around November 29th, 1972 by the good folks over at Atari. Later on in 1975-ish it was released on the Atari 2600. And there is only half a million different 'plug-in and play'-esce consoles that have came out with just solely Pong on it and nothing else. For sure around the time of the original Pong and Atari 2600. Really Pong is the base of so many different kinds of games. Like Call of Duty? Squint enough and its literally just a group of Pong Paddles shooting out Pong balls! OK that's a huge extreme, but to a leaser extreme, just look at stuff like Brick Breaker, or even something like Space Invader that for sure had someone looking at Pong and taking that concept to a next extreme. And its such a wonder to think about how we went from Pong to stuff like Call of Duty and it just took a lot of will power and maybe a bit of spit on some duct tape, but that elbow grease also helped out a lot, but we FOR SURE couldn't of gotten there without blast processing. But I really feel like the influence of Pong back then really went past the old 0's and 1's that the game was made of. It really started to make people think of a world beyond the real world. Beyond what we can touch, beyond what can be filmed and put to screen. Into the digital vast endless space, into a whole new land where we can make the decisions of victory or loss with just the push of some buttons (or the twist of the knobs on some random systems!) So it's a wonder that this game can be so simple but people still think of this as the first game to ever be made! So primitive but so influential. In terms of the graphics, like I've said its pretty simple, there's no background to speak of, no color really in the whole game. Just a bunch of white sticks on the screen known as paddles that move up and down on the left and right sides of the screen where you got to try and stop a white dot called a Pong ball from going to your side of the screen by bouncing it back to the opponents side. Really I just explained the Graphics, Depth and to a large extent the Difficulty all in one go! The rest of the difficulty is really just how good the other person is and if they know how to 'whip' the Pong Ball back to the opponent. And for the story....... well you got me there! Compared to this game, Mario is a Tarentino Film (sometimes I feel like it can be, in all the wrong reasons! Mario Sunshine!) But at least the sounds are pretty memorable! All 3 1/2 that there is in this game! But they really are super memorable in the fact that they can just be used with no other context and people would know where they are from. So for that alone they could be said to be super important and great sounds! And that would be my full review of Pong! But just to talk a bit more about the other influences of Pong a bit, there was all the million of other Pong 'sequels' or whatever like where you can move forwards and backwards and in different angles and where you can hold the ball for a second and shoot it back, Just loads of tiny little things to make it super cool. Like the one where you play Pong in the dark with Neon Pong Paddles! Pong sure has come a long way from its humble beginnings into become a techno rave! But I feel like if there is never really a big change up in the Pong formula ever again then that is fine as Pong did it thang all those years ago and that thang will trickle over in the gaming influence hopefully forever, if not, then well at least for the rest of my life! And for that reason alone I might of given all the rating a 5 across the board (story included) but that's because I for sure cant rate this game as its a bit flat but its the type of flat that a blankie is which just makes everything all nice and cosey and warm! So I'll have to give Pong a nice and cosey and warm 8 out of 10. If you have never played Pong before then, are you even really a gamer, or even really alive then??? I feel at least 73.2% of people in the world have played Pong before even non-gamer's and grandparents! But still if you haven't played it then you really should someday, maybe even today!
