Ill be your pixelberry! A long time ago in a dusty old town lived a Run n' Gun Arcade Cabinet called Sunset Riders that I used to play all the time! I don't even want to think about the amount of money that machine stole off me! Luckily now that I'm older I know of a way to just give the game a load of my money, and now it just stays with me forever, like a bad habit. It turns out that the Sega Genesis version came out in.............. 1992 I guess we don't know the year. Then this version the SNES came out in 1993. Ill personally say right now that the best way to play this game is for sure the Arcade version. It feels great and i feel like the shooting was made for an oversized joystick with an even more oversized ball on top. But lets see what makes the SNES version of this game a really good version to play as well. {Graphics&Sound} If you ever want to see a great looking Western games....... well there isn't very many options but this for sure in the top containers for best looking! Coming out on the SNES, this is for sure one of the best looking games for that console. From the character models down to the design of the levels this game is top tier Western. We will start with the least best part, which is the main characters, I'll agree that most of the characters to choose from look the same, but I only think the revolver ones look similar, aka Steve and Billy. I think that Bob and Cormano look different enough from each other that I dunno why people think they look the same. I know its gameplay but I wish they all had different guns, not only would it be nice for gameplay, it would also make everyone look kinda different. But even though Steve and Billy do look the same, I do like how they look, Steve's mix of lights and dark's are nice and Billy's overall blue look was always one of my favorite, you know next to Cormano. Who looks pretty awesome, always made me want characters that look like him to be in more Western movies. So ill admit that Bob is the most generic looking, although he kinda looks like a mix of Cormano mixed with the others, i may be crazy though for thinking that. If you're not looking at the main rag tag cast then you're for sure looking at the amazing backgrounds and levels in general. From the first level where you're in a wild west town. to the final level, that kind feels a bit like the first to me honestly. It's all really good designs. Some things are different from the Genesis version or the Arcade version, as this version does have a fair bit of Nintendo censorship. Like the infamous Native American level that was changed up a fair bit. Or the lack of lady friends in the first level. Or half of the stuff that makes Comano super cool. There are only like 4 1/2 enemy designs in the game sadly (OK way more then 4 1/2) and they like to reuse them a lot. But they are fun to look at so I don't complain too much, and you spend so much time looking at their bullets you don't really realize it. The bosses are great, I could go into more, all Ill say is go look at the first bosses weirdo bee stung lips and the twins boss design. But they are all mostly great bosses, I don't feel like the Indian boss EXACTLY needed to be changed in terms of design, OK maybe a little, but for sure that boss name, wow. Last for the graphics I'll say that the opening on the SNES version is really good and well worth watching on its own. In terms of the music I think its also really great, another game I cant just say 1 or 2 tracks to listen to. Just listen to it all! From the Opening theme, the first level theme, to the theme when your chasing a train its all great and fitting. It might be because I've played it so much but the first levels music will forever be in my brain, its probably one of the best tracks and I'm glad its one of the first you hear. Another thing i really like is the sounds of the guns in the game. It has a really iconic sound but i feel its also a sound that you recognize as something to get away from. A really cool feature that's in both console versions but is best here is the voice tracks in the game. They are pretty great quality for a chip based game. And the boss ones are nice to hear when you beat them and are super iconic! There really isn't too much more to say about the sounds, but there's a lot of them that are fairly memorable and the music is just lovely, and there's so much of it to. I'll give the sounds an 8 out of 10. And ill give the give the graphics also a 8 out of 10. {Story&Difficulty} Surprise, Surprise there is barely a story in this fairly old game. This sure isn't no Hateful 8 nor is it True Grit. I swear there was a crappy Calamaty Jane movie I seen before as well. The entire plot is that the 4 main characters are bounty hunters who are on the hunt for, well, bounties. Mainly the bounty of a guy named Richard Rose. A big bad guy who likes to beat up old west towns and our colorful crew does not like that at all! It's not like if you pick one bounty hunter over another that they will have a altered storyline. Everyone does the same thing, if anything Comaro has more of a 'storyline' with the backgrounds then anyone else. Really I never once played this game for its story, but its 'OK' that it has 'one' if it even has that much of it. Ironically enough Contra has an OK story if you look at it overacing-ly, but this Western Contra gives the first Contra and Mario a run for simplicity. Going bounty from bounty is nice, but nothing comes from it, you slightly feel like your fighting your way up the ranks. But no one says anything until they are dead and it never moves the 'plot' along. Onto how hard it is to play this game, it can be hard at times. Level 1 is fairly easily but I suck at the horse section of level 2, its kind of a quick curve I feel. This game can be hard at points, and at others its pretty smooth of a challenge. Rather then that and like one other horse section and a few of the bosses then this game is pretty OK. I feel the bosses are way harder then most not horse sections of the game. And if you're playing on hard then everything gets a lot faster and a lot harder hitting. Way more enemies and more bullets to dodge. But if you're just playing on the normal difficulty then well, the On-Rails sections are still hard in easier modes but, wow it's bullets fast on Hard. If everything is just too much for you, then you can pop another controller in and have a buddy help out, and double the bullets on your side will for sure make it easier for you. All in all I'll give the difficulty a 7 out of 10. And the story a 1 out of 10. If you push through it then I can see most people making it to the end of the 'story' on most difficulties, most! {Depth&Addictive} If you have played anything old with Run and or Gun in its descr And as they rode off into the sunset, them Bounty Boys relized that they didn't need any gold, or booze, or ladies, they just need each other. And with Boss Rosco now out of the picture, there wasn't much else to do but stare in a radio talk show called 'The Lives of the Cowboys.' And if that's not how your version of Sunset Riders ends, then welp, you got the wrong version! But if you are playing the SNES version then I think your playing the best one next to the Arcade. I honestly do think that this game almost gives games like Red Dead Redemption a run for its money in terms of best Western (and not the hotel either!) But like in a completly different way, like this game looks better in RDR2, because it looks better then most games of its generation. And plays better than most to, so this game is like the pixilated 2D version of the RDR series. Honestly if you've never given this game a try then try it out with a few friends one night. I promise you wont regret it. Ill give Sunset Riders for the SNES a 8.5 out of 10. |
