When you want to sell a game but don't think it will sell what do you do? You sell it under Yoshi's Cookie, or just under its normal name of Tetris Attack. But whether you know it under one name or the other, it's the same game just ya know, different name. Tetris Attack was released on the SNES on October 27, 1995 and then a year later on the original Gameboy. Both being basically the same game, just one or more portable then the other one. It was developed by Nintendos NRD1 team so you know its either really amazing or really not. Personally I love this game and always play it for a bit when I get the urge to. So let me try to sell you this game the same way I love the game!

Starting off with how great this game looks, well it looks pretty great honestly. A mixture of Tetris and Yoshi's Island, which seems like a weird combination but its actually a pretty nice mash up really. There's only like 8 different maps to choose from but each have a different lovely background to look at while your playing the game. I really like the first map and the one during the sunset, both looks nice and cosey and I think of them when I think of this game. There's always some character designs on the sides of the screens that I really like, and the 'tetris' pieces all look cute as well. Instead of just being random shapes and colors there's only 2 wide blocks that drops and they are random colors. But each color has a different design carved into the middle of them and I really like them a lot. When you make matches and combo matches it does get a bit more wild then just making the blocks disappear but nothing to crazy looking. Last thing to talk about are the cute little animations that Yoshi and who ever he is against will do during Vs. Mode. Its cute that's about it, Yoshi uses his tongue or starts to panic. The enemy will do something specific to them and panic near the end. And once you beat them they just kinda give up, wish Yoshi would jump on them or eat them with his tongue. So honestly that's all there really is to say about the graphics of Tetris Attack. The game has kinda a classic unique look, it's just Yoshi's Island but in a still frame, but they use it in such a charming way that I either kinda wish we got more or got another game. So I'll give the game a 8 out of 10. I feel this is a very classic looking game from back in the day and I love its art design.

The sounds are also where it is at as well! So I'll mention this here as its the most important here then anywhere else. This game in Japan is called Panel De Pon, which might not mean much to you but it should (its going to be on the test later!) They pulled a Mario 2 (kinda) and gave us a random Japanese game rebranded with Mario characters. The reason i say this is because the game still uses the songs from Panel De Pon, and honestly it matches reeeeeeeally well! If they ever made a real Yoshi's Island 2 then just reuse this music as it goes so well with specifically how Yoshi's Island looked, sounded and felt. I didn't know for YEARS that the music wasn't for this, I guess I kinda liked it when I thought that they made new music in the sense of Yoshi's Island. And I mean I guess they kinda did in a way right. I don't think I could tell you what song sounds the best in this game as so many sound great and in a weirdly good way, they sound kinda samey. But in like its all one long song kinda way. The music really flows from beginning to end, it all sounds like some really chill laid back music, not like how New Super Mario Bro sounds to me, more like....... I dunno, how an Alt-J album sounds, if you've even ever heard of them. I feel like if you never do anything with this game, listen to the soundtrack, its well worth your time I promise you. How about the sounds of everything else, well this is where I think the satisfaction of getting combos really comes in, I like the sound of getting multiple chains of matches. It's super cathartic and makes you want to do it again. The game over theme is also pretty good as well, so basically everything in this game just sounds really great. To rate the sounds of this game would mean that I would give it a 8 out of 10. As that soundtrack in its self is worthy of at lest 6 of those points! Oh and if you want more info about Panel De Pon wait til the very end of the review.

This game is super replayable, I don't really feel like I can go into it much in this section as it more of a depth thing. But the normal gameplay of the game is super replayable, and your always getting better at it. And if that doesn't tickle your fancy then the many different Multiplayer modes are really good and really replayable, just have to have a friend I guess. And if its not that then just playing it to relax and listen to that music is 100% an option! There are just points in my life where specifically this game pops up in my head and it wont go away until I play a few rounds. I personally like how this game goes around its gameplay personally then Tetris does. That's just me and yes I will die on that hill! But if you like stuff like Dr. Mario or tetris then this game is for sure for you and will easily slot into that group of games you replay, as if this game wasn't already part of that rotation. So if you've never picked this game up once to play it then we all know, because once you do, you'll keep picking it up time after time, year after year, Yoshi after Yoshi! COOKIE BY COOKIE!!!!! Anywho 8 out of 10!

No story! OK there's a small one where you are Yoshi and you gotta take out all of Bowser's minions and then him aaaaaaand that's it. It's even simpler then Yoshi's Island and the average Mario story, well maybe, at least on par with one for sure. I also don't feel like I can spend to much time on this section either. There isn't very much to talk about then what was said. If you want a bit more then play on Hard, and if you can beat it on that difficulty then you'll get a few funny text boxes. But if that is not what your here for, then well neither am I. I never think of the 'story' for this game, but I suppose I can at least give it a 1 out of 10 as they obviously did a very little something with it.

So obviously this game doesn't play like Tetris right? No its kinda like a mix of Tetris and Dr. Mario. As the pieces fall you have to match them up with the one already on the bottom of the screen, when they land that doesn't mean its the end of the world. The big change that I love is that you can move everything around on the bottom of the screen as long as its to the left or right. This adds a huge layer on to everything. In fact the falling aspect is kinda its own thing. Really this is the oldest form of Bejeweled or something if you really think about it. You want to match up to 3 but you can get more matched then that and the way you set everything up will effect the stack when one part is cleared out and they all fall. And of course its all about the score and how long you can last. If all of that doesn't tickle your fancy then there is the really good Multiplayer with 5 different game modes to choose from, its the same 5 you can do Solo. But everything is better with a friend am I right! All the different game modes are pretty obvious by their names, from Endless mode to Stage Clear Mode. The biggest change from all these modes that's not to obvious is in Versus Mode. In that chains of combos gives your opponents big blocks that they cant easily get ride of. That specifically reminds me of the weird rock things from Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine (2.5 and 1/2 Final Turbo Mode Mix: Vol XIII: Here we go again!) And at the very very least you can always try for a higher score than your older one. Honestly that's about it for the depth, I for sure feel that this game will never get old and have in a sense, infinite replay value, in the same sense as Tetris. And if you are talking about the Gameboy version of this game I feel that its even more as you can play this EVERYWHERE! So for the normal depth I'd give it a 7 out of 10, in the sense of the Gameboy version, maybe a 7.7 out of 10 or a 8 out of 10.

If you have played any of the other games mentioned in this video then I feel like this game is mostly easier then those, until Hard mode. Then its as hard as the rest of those, but I feel in most modes Easy on any speeds and Medium on most speeds are not hard at all. Doing the Story on Hard is nearly impossible as something like Mean Bean Machine is. So this game is for sure as difficult as you are not good at it. I used to be pretty bad at this game but everything charmed me about it so I got a lot better. But I am easily defeated by anyone who knows there way around this game even a bit more than me. And man some of those Vs. battles make me feel the same way when you do them on hard! Did I mention that Hard is hard because it is! But if you cant get a hang on the game than Endless Mode is prefect for training to get better at the other modes. If you have the eye for these kinds of games then I feel you have a huge advantage at first as that was big thing for me. I couldn't find the matches and would start to panic. So just like most of these other sections I feel the score is dictated by multiple factors and this one is again if your going up against a real person or not. And I suppose the difficulty is to. As playing this game on any mode but Hard or Vs. Multiplayer then it's a 6 out of 10 difficulty. On the others it can range from 12 out of 10 to over 9000 out of 10, depending on how good the other player is.

OK so how about that Panel De Pon i was going on about earlier. Well like i said there once was a game called Panel De Pon, which is the same game but instead with weird angel girls in the background instead of Mario characters. And then they put Yoshi stuff in it and like called it Yoshi's Cookie and then Tetris Attack or vice versa. It's a bit of a weird story really, I dunno why they felt the need to remake this game as a Yoshi game. Yoshi isn't even the series saver in terms of the Mario series, its obviously the Shy Guy! But they did, and all they really did was change the backgrounds and what not. That's why the blocks look the way they do and not like Mario symbols or something. But it was sold and good enough that to this day people remember Tetris Attack for being that charming tetris like game that randomly has Yoshi in it. But sadly no one knows of or talks about Panel De Pon even though there are more games in the series. Same with this Americanized part of the series. There was never a Tetris Attack 2, but they kept with the concept of the Tetris like gameplay, with other series as background. Mainly Pokemon and what not. They did them under the name of the Puzzle League series. So for this kind of one off game, in the eyes of both sides of this...... franchise or whatever it would be called. Ill have to give this great game a 9.2 out of 10. Give it a try even just once, even if you just played Tetris so you can have a new experience, I'm sure you'll like it.
