Heyo people of Vizzed you might know that I have said on many occasions I hate Sonic Colors however I was always talking about the Wii version because I've not actually played Sonic Colors on the DS till now and with everyone talking about Colors because of Sonic Colors Ultimate I figured now was the perfect time.

(Spoiler Warning)

Graphics 7/10 -
The game looks on par with Sonic Rush and Sonic Rush Adventure which aren't the nicest looking games but for a DS title I'm not sure how much more you could really do with it. While I don't have much to say on graphics there was a really nice touch thrown in with it being Sonic Colors they gave Sonic's boost a rainbow color and it looks so nice that it made me wanna use the boost any second I could.

Sound 6/10 -
I don't have a lot to say about the sound this time around because to be honest the DS sound font does not work well for most of the songs on the soundtrack which is really unfortunate because Colors does have a nice sound track even if some of the songs really aren't my thing.

Addictive 7/10 -
Colors DS's ranking system makes it challenging and rewarding to go for S ranks the fact the game awards you with more extra lives the better you rank makes it really rewarding scoring better. After putting off playing the game for years finally sitting down to play it I was hooked pretty early in just wanting to see how the game would handle certain stages differently than the Wii version and in some cases I think the level ideas were even better then it's console counterpart.

Story 5/10 -
This was the biggest shock to me in the game the story covers the same general basis of Eggman made a amusement park and Sonic doesn't believe it's out of the goodness of his heart and low and behold Eggman is capturing the Wisps but because it's on the DS it uses a lot of text instead of the cutscenes and the game doesn't force the bad jokes and such unlike it's Wii counterpart! That being said just cause the writing doesn't suck doesn't make the plot good it simply raises it from a 1/10 to a 5/10 due to the fact that nothing much really happens or feels important in Sonic Colors. Colors DS also extends the story a bit by adding an extra boss fight using Super Sonic to fight the Mother Wisp and it's foreshadowed a couple times in the game, though that being said I don't think the fight really added that much to the story.

Depth 7/10 -
The game may seem small at first compared to it's console counterpart with only having 2 acts per area compared to the 6 in the console version, however the game makes up with it some missions and special stages! The missions are a neat addition to the game that start out pretty easy but can get harder the further you progress. When it comes to special stages the game for some reason brings back the dreaded half pipe! However I don't think it's all that bad this time around I think most of the special stages give you more than enough comfort room to make mistakes this time around meaning I actually didn't hate the half pipe minus the last stage. Red rings are in this version of Colors as well unlocking art and music and they can be pretty challenging to get all of the difficult ones I got while playing I got by complete accident where I wish I recorded me playing so I could of looked like a god by complete accident. Game land is also in this version making race vs an A.I. where it will throw random items at you that honestly wasn't very fun to deal with. Level design wise when the idea works it really worked but when there's an idea that doesn't really work it can feel awful to force yourself through the level. In terms of levels that worked my best example is without a doubt Terminal Velocity or at least the part you play leading into the "final" boss while not the normal 2D you played up to that point using the dual screens while running down the level at high speeds being chased was thrilling and probably my standout moment of the entire game. For some levels I didn't really think worked I would first like to point that Planet Wisp loses it's beat part in my opinion which was the opening segment where you run through the grass but to be fair I don't know how you would do anything similar on the DS so the game instead focuses on using the Drill Wisp which while more fun than how it's used in the console was still a bit lame. I also really didn't enjoy Starlight Carnival randomly having a auto scrolling part right at the end the speed of it just felt off compared to Sonic's movement. The bosses on the other hand are all way better than the console versions while avoiding falling into the same issues that the Rush games tended to have of fights going on way to long. The standout was definitely the Nega Wisp Armor fight where Eggman keeps using the Wisps color power until you steal the one he's currently using and then he can no longer use that color power which makes perfect sense. The final boss was the only boss fight in the game that I found really weak while being cool having a fight be in 3D it felt like a mix of a couple boss fights from past games like it really reminds me of both the Dark Gaia fight and the Alf Layla wa-Layla fight but it's just worse. I say it reminds me of both of those fights cause for the majority of it the way you just flying through space is really similar to the fight in Secret Rings Mother Wisp even does the line across the screen attack. It reminds me of the Dark Gaia fight from the PS2/Wii version because of when you have to fly towards Dark Gaia's eye and not hit things along the way. Mother Wisp only has like 3 attacks which because your Super Sonic you take no damage from so they feel pointless.

Difficulty 6/10 -
While for most of the game I was able to easily get through most stages some levels feel like being evil and have instant death hazards which can be pretty annoying but due to how easy it is to get extra lives I wouldn't worry to much about that. I was going to rate the difficulty a 5 but the last special stage was so frustrating I ended up having to raise it to a 6 as it felt like the typical half pipe near perfection the games typically want from you.

Overall 7/10 -
I was really surprised by how much I enjoyed Sonic Colors on DS I was expecting to hate it to be honest with how much I hate Sonic Colors on the Wii and with me not really enjoying the Rush games that much but I'm happy to say Sonic Colors for the DS was a shocking change of pace that I would recommend trying if you don't like the console version of Sonic Colors

SonicOlmstead : I can admire someone who's not afraid to air a controversial opinion, seeing that you like the ds version over the wii version is respectable. How this game got 9.2 average user score is beyond me though. That's implicating a near perfect masterpiece lmao.
