I love One Finger Death Punch. I think it was in 2014 when I first started playing the Steam version of the original game and I just couldn't do anything else because of how much fun it was. I used to put in a couple hours every single day and I was really good too, I think it took me well under a month to beat all of the levels.

I loved the game so much, the visuals and music were both really good and I loved the super fast gameplay. Fast forward to maybe two months ago. I was browsing the Switch eshop and I was shocked to see that there was a One Finger Death Punch 2. I didn't even know that there was a sequel and it was on sale too so I knew i had to pick it up.

The only concern was that I had no idea how they could have made the game better than it already was. Unfortunately, after playing for a couple hours I realized that it wasn't really much better than the first game. It didn't feel like there was much added from the original game to make it stand out. That's not a bad thing since the original game was already amazing, but it left me wanting more.

GRAPHICS: 9/10

The graphics of One Finger Death Punch were already amazing. I personally didn't see any improvements from the original game other than a couple moves that seem more outrageous and gruesome. But in general, the graphics look great. Sure, the characters are stick figures, but everything else is full of color, detail, and life.

The stages that you fight on usually look really good and the backgrounds are always full of color and detail. The way that the background moves, changes, and integrates itself with the stage are also nice. For me, the single best part of the graphics section is thr animation when it comes to movement and combat.

This is a game about quick reflexes and coordination. Some of the harder stages could have you face off against dozens of enemies in a 60 second period. Or you'll be in the survival game mode and fight 1000 bad guys in one go. Or you'll fight a boss or a hard character that requires multiple button presses and multiple moves in a short period of time.

In order for this to work, the combat, movement, animations, and transitions all have to be really smooth and fluid. The button presses also have to be Super responsive with no lag and a good FPS or the game just doesn't work. Thankfully One Finger Death Punch 2 works well in all those areas and looks great. As a result, my grade for graphics is going to be a 9 out of 10.

SOUND: 9/10

Other than how fast paced and awesome the gameplay is, the sound is my other favorite aspect of this game. Every aspect of sound works well with all the other stuff going on to make a really immersive experience. When it comes to sound, the weakest link would be the generic sounds of the game such as all the different combat sounds. They aren't bad but the other two aspects are much better.

Next up in the sound department is the voice acting, which is very good. The game is constantly being narrated and whoever voices the narrator did a great job at giving the character so much life. The voice that was used for thr narrator also fits in with the style and tone of the game so perfectly in my opinion.

The last and possibly biggest aspect of sound would be the music, which is amazing and matches the fast paced action perfectly. You have the music that plays while you're on the main menus as well as the music that plays during each of the levels. All these tunes are high energy and get you pumped for all the action. Because all these different parts of sound work so well, my grade for sound will be another 9 out of 10.

ADDICTIVENESS: 9/10

One Finger Death Punch is so much fun. My favorite part of the gameplay is how fast paced all of the action is. You get to just go up against a bunch of enemies and you can mow them all down using just two buttons on your Switch. It's incredibly simple but it can also be Super challenging when things get harder or if you don't have great reflexes or coordination.

This is also one of those games where you'll find yourself going back and completing old levels for a number of reasons. Maybe you only got two stars and want to perform better to get the 3rd. Maybe you want to improve your high score on a certain level or get that elusive perfect badge. Or maybe you're like me and you just want the thril of the combat so you play the same levels over and over just for fun.

One of the fun things about the gameplay is that there are different modes within the levels. Maybe you can play a nunchuck or lightsaber round, which are both really fun. Maybe you'll play a round where you have to defend yourself from projectiles like knives. Maybe there's a boss round, a survival round, a generic fight round, or something else.

I love the nunchuck and lightsaber ones, so if I'm bored i usually find myself going back to those levels I already did and just playing them again. If there's a level you really enjoyed, there's no shame in playing it over again 100 times, the game is really that much fun. There's also other things to do like focus on cool skills and abilities as well as a survival round where you keep fighting until you're finally defeated, which is probably my favorite of all the game modes.

Unfortunately my only concern with addictiveness is the tutorial. I probably would havd given this aspect a 10 if it wasn't for the tutorial. While a tutorial is obviously a good idea, this one is mandatory and lasted like 10 levels so it took me around 30 minutes before I could play freely. It was a very slow start and as such, my grade for addictiveness will be yet another 9 out of 10.

STORY: 0

When it comes to the story of One Finger Death Punch 2, there isn't really much to discuss, just like its predecessor. It's really just a game about combat and gameplay and nothing else. There's just a ton of levels where do a variety of different fights against different types of mobs. Think of any basic level progression game like Angry Birds or whatever, it's just about going through different levels and beating them. You also have a survival mode and a couple other things going on throughout the game but if you wanted a story, you'll be disappointed.

DEPTH: 8/10

The only great thing about the depth is the fact that there are so many levels to play through. The original game I believe had 100 levels to fight through and there were three different difficulty levels. So there were really 300 different levels to go through plus all the other stuff. I'm not entirely sure how many levels the sequel has. All the levels on the original game were displayed on a map that you can scroll through. But in this game They are displayed as a list bar with like 10 levels at a time and you can't look past the ones that you haven't reached yet.

Many of the levels are also pretty short. It's all fast paced so you get a lot of content and combat in a short period of time but many of the levels will only last you like 30 to 60 seconds. Unless you're doing a survival level, where you go until you're defeated. I think my record for a survival game is around 25 minutes where I defeated more than 1,000 enemies in one go.

Other than the levels and different modes, there isn't much else to the depth other than a couple features scattered here and there. Other than that, there's still a decent amount of things to do. The website howlongtobeat says that a completionist will average around 22 hours. But if you love the gameplay and doing levels over, you'll play for a lot longer. I probably put 5 to 10 hours into survival mode alone. Overall, there's a decent amount of stuff going on and my grade for depth will be an 8 out of 10.

DIFFICULTY: 6

The game can be really challenging at times if you don't have great reflexes. If you can tell that you aren't going to be good at games that are so fast paced, you probably shouldn't consider this game. Other than that, the game will be pretty easy if you have the skills and will obviously get harder as you progress through different levels and unlock different difficulties. When you get to those points, just keep trying until you pass.

THIS GAME IS ON THE SWITCH

Like I said before, I loved playing the original game on Steam and I loved the fast paced action. But unfortunately, the game has one huge flaw that can't be overlooked. The version of One Finger Death Punch 2 that I'm playing and reviewing is on the Switch. The game plays and runs exactly like the original did and just like the sequel does on Steam but the nature of the fast paced gameplay and pressing buttons 100000 times hurts this version of the game.

You'll be pressing the A and Y buttons 3 or 4 times per second. In one 60 second level you could be looking at more than 100 quick button presses. If you're really good at the survival mode you could be looking at 2000 to 3000 button presses in one go. That will be a really easy way to damage your right joycon and because of that, I think I'll have to dock 2 points from the cumulative score.

OVERALL: 8.3/10

Overall, One Finger Death Punch 2 is a lot of fun and has so much replayability. The game is fun to look at, it has some great music, and the gameplay is just so good and lots of fun. In total, I think I put between 30 and 40 hours into the game and I'm nowhere close to beating all the levels. The game is also a decent price. On the Switch it's pretty expensive but the eshop price has dropped to $7 or less a couple times, which is on par with the Steam price.

If you can get it for a decent price and you love fast paced gameplay, then One Finger Death Punch 2 will surely be a game that you need to pick up. If the tutorial was optional and you didn't have to constantly worry about breaking your joycon, I would have easily given One Finger Death Punch 2 a 9 out of 10. But as a result of those two minor annoyances, my overall grade for the game drops to 8.3 out of 10.
