It’s no surprise that I’m a big fan of skateboarding games, especially all of the amazing Tony Hawk games. Back in the day I used to play Pro Skater 2 religiously. Probably put more than 100 hours into it and that wasn’t even my favorite of the Tony Hawk games.

Os it was obvious that I would be very excited when Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1+2 was announced for the PS4. I never played the original Pro Skater but I was eager to relive all the nostalgia of playing in those iconic places like the hanger, the school, and NYC in Pro Skater 2.

Not only did I buy the game the day that it came out, but I ended up spending like 8 hours a day messing around in it for a week straight, even recording a bunch of videos, and I was not disappointed, especially when comparing the price to the amount of content that you get.

GRAPHICS: 8/10

The graphics are great for a skateboarding game. Heck, I had no issues with the graphics from the mid 2000’s Tony Hawk games and here they’re even better. All the models look great, whether it’s the characters, the maps, or the different parts of the environment.

Most of the time, the animations are smooth as well but there are a couple times when the animation looked a bit choppy, kind of like how movement in GTA V felt. But other than that, it’s a really good remaster that looks nice and feels realistic at times. Graphics gets an 8 out of 10.

SOUND: 9/10

I would have to say that the sound is easily the most iconic thing about the Pro Skater games. I remember playing the original and there was always so much good music that were classics. The series always had some good music and then the remaster featured more than 30 new songs that were all just as great as the old ones.

Plus there’s also a decent amount of regular sounds. If you crash, it’s mostly going to sound like you crashed and when you’re doing tricks, you’re going to hear the effort put into them. The regular sounds obviously aren’t as good as the soundtrack when it comes to sound, but as a whole, the sound aspect gets a 9 out of 10.

ADDICTIVENESS: 10/10

I would be lying if I said that the game wasn’t fun. People who love skateboarding are going to love this game and people who couldn’t skate if their lives depended on it are also going to have a lot of fun with this game.

The original games each had a lot to offer. The original Pro Skater 2 had so much to do. There was the regular career mode which was required to unlock new areas and you would have 2 minutes to skate around the area racking up points and doing certain tasks. There was also a free skate mode so that you can explore each area without the stress of a time limit or the stress of doing certain tasks over and over.

But even when you’re playing the career mode, it’s so much fun that you might find yourself doing the same area dozens of times until you complete everything that area has to offer. Plus there was a multiplayer mode and a level creator mode.

Pro Skater 2 alone had like an easy 50 hours of content and this remake has both Pro Skater 1 and 2, and a bunch of other content, which means that you will never get bored. If you eventually get bored of Pro Skater 1 or 2, then you can just go to the multiplayer world. One week after I bought the game, there were already dozens of really good levels created by random people.

Many of these levels were very creative and allowed you to spend hours on each. By now there has to be hundreds of really good user created levels that offer more than the core game, which already offered a ton. You have no reason to ever get bored of this game and as a results addictiveness gets a perfect 10 out of 10.

STORY: 6/10

There isn’t really a story in the sense of what we expect out of a story. The career mode is simply just doing different tasks in a level. Get a certain amount of points, do specific tricks in specific areas, collect the letters S-K-A-T-E around the map, and complete a bunch of other tasks. Once you do enough, you unlock the next level and you start the process all over again.

There’s no real story. There’s lots of skateboarding games that have really good stories like Tony Hawk’s American Wasteland, but Pro Skater 1+2 doesn’t really have one. I have to give story a 6 out of 10 because even though it’s a remake of a game that was played like this originally, I feel like something could have been added in this area.

DEPTH: 10/10

There’s just so much to do in Pro Skater 1+2. The levels themselves are pretty big and there’s a lot of main levels that you get to play through. Between both games, there are nearly two dozen levels to choose from.

In addition to that, I also mentioned how the multiplayer aspect of the game works. There are so many user created levels to choose from, easily enough to never run out of levels, and many of them are really good. I probably played through like 50 different user created levels and there were at least a dozen that I thought were A+ levels.

There’s also a cool skate shop in the game that lets you customize your game and experience in a number of ways. Depth gets another perfect 10 out of 10.

DIFFICULTY: 6/10

The only problem that I have with the game is the fact that there are some objectives in the career mode that are actually kind of hard, especially when you have only 2 minutes to spare. For instance, there was one objective in the NYC level where I had to collect 5 items scattered around the map.

A couple of them were pretty easy, I think one was on top of a handrail, one was on top of a ramp, and one was in a gap between two fences. Those were easy to get but there was one that was like 15 feet off the ground and you could only get to it by jumping off a rock and 90% of the time you don’t have enough speed to get far enough to reach it.

When I did have enough speed, most of the time I would go too far to the left or right and miss it. I would always do this one first and fail 3 or 4 times and then have to reset the round. Took me maybe 50 tries to complete the objective. It was hard and there’s quite a few objectives that are this difficult.

If you completed enough objectives to the point where these hard ones aren’t required, then you can skip over them. But if you want to 100% the game or these are the last ones required, they are going to be a pain. Difficulty gets a 6 just for these kinds of levels alone.

OVERALL: 8.7/10

Overall, the game is so much fun, even if you have no idea how to use a skateboard IRL. The game has a lot of quality and there’s just so much content to choose from between the two remastered games and all of the multiplayer stuff. The game is even better when you look at the price.

It wasn’t even a $60 game when it came out, which would have still been worth it. When the game came out just four months ago, it cost only $40 which is a huge steal and it even dropped to $30 a couple times.

If you can get the game, you should. It’s awesome and gets an 8.7 out of 10 from me.
