Yu-Gi-Oh GX feels pretty standard for the Yu-Gi-Oh lineup of games; strategy turn-based game where the focus is on how many card you can collect and how well you can use them.

Story: The story is set in the first season of GX(which is bad for me, an Elemental Hero Neos fan) and you progress the story by dueling your customaizable avatar against the characters from the main series, ranging from Jaden, to Cyrus, Chumley, Alexa, The Chazz and his underlings, to various students from the Slifer, Rah, and Obelisk dorms. You have the ability to change dorms from red, to yellow, to blue depending on how well you do on various tests.

Gameplay: The gameplay is pretty standard; build a deck from either duels you win or from the shop and use it to duel others, which is where most of the enjoyment comes from, and you unravel the mystery behind the academy with your friends. You build your deck with monster, spell, and trap cards, and even have the option of making an extra/fusion deck as well. Over time, the duels become harder as the characters change up their strategies, forcing you to do the same.

Sound/soundtrack: As an adaptation of GX, the soundtrack is pretty faithful to the anime(as faithful as the restrictions of the GBA could allow), which is sure to atteact some fans. The overall soundtrack sounds decent, again what the GBA allows.

Replay value: Hardcore fans of the franchise might find a lot of replay value for this, given that there are 1200 cards for the player to try and collect, thus leading to a plethora of deck combinations. Casual fans may find this a game to pick up every now and again, if only to build their favorite one or two decks.

The one downside I have for this is that it focuses on the first season, so we don't really see the Neo Spacian cards get showcased, which kind of lowers the value of it for me(by the way, did I tell you I'm a Neos fan?). but over all, it's a decent entry into the franchise and worth a try

Did you ever play Spirit Caller? It was just like the first game, but a million times better, and with way more to do.

I remember when this game first came out, and it was a day one purchase for me, because I was a huge fan of the GX series (yeah, I know, not many of us out there, and understandably so, the characters do kind of suck at times, and the appeal was much lesser than the original series, though you can say that about every series to follow the original series).
