There I was, sitting in my living room one afternoon. I had put my copy of Metroid Prime into my Nintendo GameCube. As my console hummed and started up, I was eager to play one of my favorite games in the series. The polygonal graphics, the beautiful soundtrack, the multiple difficulty levels, it was a fantastic game for its time!
As my ship landed on the space research vessel Frigate Orpheon, I jumped out, wearing my Power Suit, ready to see what was here. I walked along a path, protected by the frigate's invisible barrier keeping me from falling off, to a door, turning off a couple of force fields along the way. Past the door were a couple of quiet hallways, which came to a big room with multiple ejected escape pods. I had noticed a Space Pirate, injured, but still alive, which I quickly took care of with my Power Beam. As I went further into the space vessel, I encountered a few more half-living pirates.
I eventually came to the vessel's reactor core and encountered a Parasite Queen. After a short battle, the ship was going to self-destruct in a few minutes. As I rushed to get back to my gunship, I came face-to-face with a large metal pterosaur-like creature, who was a cybernetically enhanced version of the high-ranking Space Pirate, Ridley, who flew off towards the planet below after freeing himself from his life-support equipment. After almost getting to the elevator closest to the beginning of the vessel, I was knocked back into the elevator room from an explosion, which resulted in most of my suit equipment malfunctioning. I then quickly went to my ship and followed Meta Ridley, as he was called, as the frigate crashed into the planet below.
As I landed my ship on the planet, now known as Tallon IV, I looked up to see raindrops appearing on my visor. Past a door on my right, I was faced with a couple of Burrowers which I quickly dispatched. I made my way into a big room with a waterfall and a couple of Zoomers, but I just walked under the platforms that they were on, through a door to my right, after facing a couple more Burrowers.
After a little while, I came to a research area in Phendrana Drifts that was owned by the Space Pirates. As I made my way through the somewhat abandoned facility, I went to a big room with a Thermal Visor. After deactivating the three shields by scanning the terminals with my Scan Visor, I went down to get it. Immediately after acquiring the visor, the power to a few rooms and hallways in the research facility went out for the rest of the game, including the place I obtained the item. But I was not alone. There were a few Metroids in the room. These little creatures can drain a being's energy, without even leaving a scratch. Using the Thermal Visor, the Metroids were a little easier to defeat, albeit still tricky, being able to see them in the darkened room.
A little while later, I arrived at the Pirates' main facility, the Phazon Mines, another research area. Unlike the smaller research area, the Mines had quite a bit more activity. When I arrived, I encountered a few Space Pirates. "It's the Hunter!" one of them said. "Be careful! She's armed and dangerous!" another one said. "She can't hurt us!" the first pirate said. "Oh yeah? Then YOU face her first!" the second pirate said while pushing the first towards me. I had also encountered Shadow Pirates, who utilized cloaking technology, making me use my previously acquired Thermal Visor to detect them. There was also Beam Troopers, who were Pirates with reverse-engineered versions of my Chozo Beam weaponry, and multiple automated defenses. I found a few Metroids, and some stronger units from the Pirates' Project Helix, which was an infusion of Phazon into Space Pirates: a few Elite Pirates, a Phazon Elite, and the special Elite Pirate Upsilon, otherwise known as the Omega Pirate, which was the most powerful of the Elite Pirate forces. After a fierce battle against Upsilon, I acquired the Phazon Suit, literally by being toppled by the fiend.
After a while of searching for the twelve Chozo Artifacts, I eventually made my way to the Artifact Temple, where I fought against the one enemy that was rarely seen at all, making only three appearances: in Frigate Orpheon, at the entrance in Phendrana Drifts, and at the Artifact Temple: Meta Ridley. Featuring one of the best music tracks in the game, he was the only thing stopping me from placing the artifacts and entering the Impact Crater. He was a dangerous opponent, but I managed to defeat him.
After I placed the artifacts, I entered the Impact Crater. As I explored the crater, I found an unidentifiable form of Phazon of a red/orange coloration. I also had to face a new type of Metroid: the Fission Metroid. But I made it to the bottom of the crater and was face-to-face with the source of the Phazon on Tallon IV, the most dangerous Metroid in the game, even stronger than Meta Ridley himself: Metroid Prime.
First, I had to face him in his exoskeleton, which was no easy task. I had to switch beams repeatedly while attacking him, avoiding his attacks all the while. I took quite a bit of damage during the fight. At one point, I think I could taste a little blood. After jumping down three or four sections of the crater during the match, I jumped down one final time. I was now at the bottom of the cavity. What was in front of me was the exoskeleton of the creature with the top of it opened up. The core suddenly flew out, and it was the last challenge of eliminating Phazon.
After a long and tiring battle, I managed to defeat the core. But before it dropped dead, it wrapped me with its slimy tentacles and stole my Phazon Suit upgrade, reverting me to my Gravity Suit! Then the crater started to collapse, so I made my way out of there fast.
It was done. Phazon was eliminated. As I stood on my ship, I took off my helmet. I took a deep breath from Tallon IV's fresh air, and made a sigh of relief, knowing that I had defeated the Phazon threat. Upon watching the secret ending, I had a feeling that I was wrong. I was left with just two questions: what is that thing and what is its connection to Phazon?
