Bare Knuckle II  or Streets of rage 2 as it is known in the USA/Canada was a popular beat em up type of game for the Sega. Street fighter developed by Capcom was also popular on both the Sega and SNES systems. So the question is what if the two games were mixed and what would it be like? Well, that is what this game tries to do. As this game you can play as Balrog, Bison, Cammy and Zangief from the Street Fighter series. So lets see how this game compares to others.

Story: 6

Mister X the leader of the criminal organization  was defeated by Adam, Blaze and Axle. Crime in the city dropped and it seemed all was well. Until a crime outbreak starts to occur again. In addition Mister X kidnaps Adam in an attempt to lure the heroes into a trap. Blaze and Axle get Adam's kid brother skate, as well as Wrestling Champion Max. However, street fighter characters have also joined.  Now here is were the plot seems to be missing something and kind of comes undone.  How did the streets of rage characters contact the Street fighter characters? That really wasn't explained at all in the plot. It is also not explained in the game either.

The street fighter characters you can play as are Bison, Balrog, Cammy and Zangief.  Based on their street fighter backgrounds one can could conclude why they are in this game

Bison- criminal mastermind and leader of Shadlow  criminal organization. It could be that Bison sees Mister X as a top rival. Its possible Bison joins in to eliminate his rival

Balrog- Boxer but a dirty one at that. All Balrog cares about is money. So he probably entered to earn money

Cammy- high ranking British Officer that wants to bring Bison to justice. Her unit also goes after other criminal organizations.

Zangief- Russia champion and top fighter. Probably entered to make his country proud and in the Street fighter series Zangief is a good guy.

I give the story a 6 out of 10. It just seems like the plot is lost a little bit. Its never explained really why the street fighter characters join in the fight against Mister X. Based on their biographies we are forced to conclude why they joined. Now with that being said, I like the idea of street fighter characters being in this game. I think its a cool and groovy idea.

Graphics and Controls: 9

The graphics in this game are very similar to the original game. In fact nothing has really changed except the sprites. The backgrounds are left unchanged, which is a good thing. Bare Knuckle II had some of the best graphics on the Sega game system. The city looks like a real city, the baseball stadium looks like an actual ball stadium. In addition the stage layouts have not been changed at all. The colors go very well with the game. I should also say the street fighter characters are exactly how they appear in the SNES and Sega games. The sprites have been changed of course.

The controls are very good as well. The controls are pretty much unchanged from the original game. It should be important to know that some of the characters are faster and slower. Zangief controls like Max did in the original game. Powerful attacks but slower. Bison, and Balrog are pretty balanced, and Cammy controls like Skate did in the original game. The only minor problem is sometimes when Bison does his main attack it appears there is a tiny lag. Overall I give the graphics and controls a 9 out of 10.

Sound: 9

If you have read my other Bare Knuckle II and hacks reviews its no secret how I gave the sound a high score. Well I am about to do it again. The sound has been pretty much unchanged. The rocking stage themes are so nice you can pause the game just to listen. The groans the enemies make when getting knocked out is a nice touch. Moreover, the sounds your character makes when they attack is priceless. What I also like in this version is they added some of the Street Fighter Sounds. Your character uses their voice they had in Street Fighters games. Now that is nicely done when you can use the original voice while making a hack. Thus, I give the sound a 9 out of 10.

Replay Value 7

I like having street fighter characters to play as. That adds something different and new to the game. I actually had fun playing this game. I played the game mostly as Zangief but I tried to play as the other characters as well. However, I didn't get to play as my favorite Street Fighter characters. I hope they show up in future hacks. My favorite Street Fighter Characters are Blanka, Sagat, and Honda. I was disappointed those three were not in this game. Of the four characters in this game Zangief is my favorite. But once again I would love to see Blanka, Honda and Sagat in a game like this. Other than that this is a good solid game to play. I give it a 7 out of 10.

Depth: 4

Well as it should be no surprise these type of games do not have high amounts of depth to them. Fighting games are not known for their depth. There are no secret items to collect, no secret  paths to explore, no power ups to find and etc. However this game does have some things that add some depth to it. First you have 4 characters to chose from. It is sometimes nice to play the game through a different character. Also the stages are very long and take time to beat. They are different weapons you can use. So those things add something. I give the depth a 4 out of 10. Its not like puzzle games were there is no depth, on the other hand its not like a Mega Man game.

Difficulty: 6

The difficulty really depends on the characters you play the game as.  I'am going to give each character a difficulty rating on their own. But I am also going to comment on a few things that effect the difficulty overall. While you can chose the difficulty from easy, normal, hard and mania. I will be focusing on the default normal. The main problem is enemy placements. Enemies just love to gang up on you often times in bunches. They will hit you from behind, use weapons against you, and appear in bunches. Some of their attacks are powerful too. The bosses can be difficult in this game two in particular just love to bury you. Abedebe and R. Bear just really tear you up in this game no matter who you use.  The good news is the game gives you lots of chances to earn lives. So if your running low on lives you can easily find one. Also the game sometimes leaves weapons for you to pick up.

Now for each characters difficulty rating

Zangief- 5  Zangief is slow but his attacks are very powerful.  Zangiefs kicks and punches can really knock out enemies. His attacks can also clear out enemies in bunches. Still some difficulty is Zangief is not the fastest character.

Bison-5  Bison has more speed then Zangief and his psycho crush attack is almost unfair to the enemies. His attack can clear out enemies and do damage to them. Some difficulty is there is the small lag when doing his attack.

Balrog- 7- Balrog's punches sure do a lot of damage when they connect. He  has average speed.  The downside is he leaves himself open to enemy hits. In addition him being a boxer punches are only his moves.

Cammy-7 Cammy is a lot like Skate. Cammy relies on speed and judo moves. While playing through as her be aware you will have to hit the enemies a few more times. This can get you hit and allow the enemies to gang up on you. The speed though helps

Overall 8.3

Overall I give the game a good rating of 8.3. I had fun playing this game and it is a good game to play. I did have a few issues with this game. But again these are my issues alone. Some will find no problem with the issues I have. As always I will start with the positives.

I really like the idea of mixing street fighter with bare knuckle II. When you think about it the street fighter characters would fit this game perfectly. I also like how the characters maintained their moves from the street fighter games. In addition, giving the characters their original voices was nicely done. Moreover, I like how the graphics and controls were left unchanged. The difficulty is about right for this game. I really think the maker/s were trying to add something new to the original streets of rage game. I can tell it took time and effort to make this game. I also think they were trying really hard to combine two popular games into one. They did a nice job of doing that and if that was their goals they certainly achieved that.

Now for the negatives. I really feel like the story could have used some cleaning up. Its not really clear on why the Bare Knuckle team contacted the Street fighter team. We are left with using the street fighter characters background to assume that is the reason they joined the fight against mister X. So that could have been explained a little bit more. I also noticed the lag when Bison does his psycho crush. Its not a main issue but it is there. The good news it really does not effect the game in anyway.  The main thing with this game for me is the characters. I was hoping I would get to play as my favorite street fighter characters: Blanka, Sagat and Honda. I like Zangief so I was glad to get to play as him. I think what they could have done is made all the characters from street fighter available: Blanka, Honda, Zangief, Sagat, Ryu, Ken, Guile, Chun-Li, Cammy, T-Hawk, DJ, Long, Dhalseim, Balrog, Vega,  and Bison. That would have been very fun. I hope if another game like this is made they will use some of the other characters.

Overall, I had fun playing this game and its a good game that offers something new. Would I recommend this game. Yes I would recommend this game. The issues I had should not discourage anyone as they are my issues alone. A lot of gamers would not even be bothered by them. This is a game that is fun for all ages.

In conclusion this concludes my review. I hope you take time to play and enjoy this game.
Blessings in Christ.
