Streets of rage 2 was a popular sega game that came out in the early 1990's. In other countries the game is known as Bare Knuckle II. Streets of rage 2 was popular because it was a beat em up type of game. Over the years several hacks have been made of this game. However, the demand has always been to get to play as some of the villains in the game. Well now you can play as the bad guys in this hack. Today's review I will be comparing this game to the original as well as other hacks.

Story: 9

The plot basically has three in it depending on if you play as a good guy or bad guy. Mister X has his own story. So I will cover both stories. The good guys are Max, Blaze, Axle, Adam and Skate. The bad guys are: Galsa, Donovan, Jet, Signal, Barbon,  Electra, Abedebe, R, Bear, Shiva and Mr. X. Anyway lets get to the point. After Mister X was defeated and crime went way down all seemed to go very well. Until crime breaks out again and Mr. X starts to regain control of the city. Except this time he has his top officers in his organization helping him. The good guys must stop the carnage and bring Mister X to justice. Now if you play as a bad guy the plot is different. The bad guys are wanting to gain more power so they set out to make sure they can achieve this as any way power. Some are also hoping to move up the ladder. Mister X story is he is basically tired of people failing him and he wants more power. So he sets out to show his minions how it is done.

Okay I really like this plot. I like it that it has three different things going for it. Also getting to play as some of the villains is just awesome. I really like how the maker or makers gave the bad guys a plot on their own. I mean every story fits the characters. The good guys are trying to stop Mister X. The bad guys are wanting more power and Mister X wants more power and to expand his empire. The plot is very simple so 9 out of 10 does it.

Graphics and Controls: 9

The original game had awesome graphics and controls. So far most hacks I have played have had similar graphics and controls. So how does this version compare to the others? Graphic wise its the same as the original. The backgrounds that made the original game a huge hit are left unchanged. I really like the themes in this game. The city looks like an actual city. The sprites in this game are unchanged also. Everything seems to go very well.

The controls are very good and play a lot like the original game. However, it should be noted that some of the controls are different depending on which character you use. Some characters are faster, and slower than others. The controls are made to reflect that. But the one little issue is there are about two characters in this game that it seems the controls want to change speeds. I do not know if that was done on purpose or not. It is a very minor issue but it is noticeable. Overall, I give the graphics and controls a solid 9 out of 10.

Sound: 10

The sound is left unchanged from the original game, which is good because it did not need to be changed. The music is awesome and it is so easy to get caught up in the music and forget your playing a game. The sound your combos make are very good and let you know your doing damage. I also like the sounds the enemies make when they are being knocked out. Enemies groan and moan as they are being knocked out. Also the sounds enemies or even your character make when they have a weapon is nicely done to. Overall, the sound is amazing and unchanged from the original game. I give it 10 out of 10.

Replay Value: 9

The replay value in this game is better than the original game or any other hack I have played. The main reason getting to play as the bad guys is really fun and adds something different. I like the fact I get to play as my favorite Streets of Rage 2 Bad guy R. Bear. When I say that you could play different characters I knew I had to play this game. I certainly had fun playing this game. This game has a lot going for it. It is also fun to play as a different character as well. Not many hacks can top the original game. But this one did. I give the replay value a 9

Depth 6

Okay most beat em up games do not have a lot of depth. The original game and other hacks did not really have a lot of depth. There are no secret items, paths, power ups or anything like that to collect. Now weapons can be collected. These games are not like Mega Man, Mario, and Donkey Kong games. Those games had a lot of depth. Still the original game did have a little bit in it mainly because of the stages being long. So what about this version? Well, this version has a little bit of more depth to it than the original game. The main reason is getting a chance to play as different characters. It is fun to play the game as a different character so that adds something. Also  having the stages remain the same adds a little bit more. Thus, I give the depth a 6 out of 10. Its not like a Mega Man game that has different paths, secrets, items to collect or anything like that. On the other hand its not a game like puzzle games that have no depth. So I think 6 out of 10 does it.

Difficulty: 6

The difficulty is hard to rate in this game mainly because the difficulty is different for each character. Still no matter who you use some things do not matter. Now you can make the game easy, normal, hard or mania. I will be using the default setting normal for this part of my review. Enemies just love to gang up on you in this game. A lot of times enemies will increase in number when you go through different sections of the stages. In addition, enemies love to do cheap shots. Enemies will drop from the ceiling or trees. They will also pop up from sewers as well. Moreover, the bosses in this game esp the later ones really pack a punch, no pun intended, so you can get beat quick.

So now about the characters? As I stated some characters  make the game more  hard or more easy. Max, Abedebe, and R-Bear are really powerful. Their moves do a lot of damage to enemies so playing as them makes the game not so hard. Blaze, Axle, Adam, Barbon, and Electra are more balanced characters and have normal type of difficulty as I mentioned above. If you play as Skate his moves are made more for speed not so much power. So it takes more hits for him to knock an enemy out. Jet is an air-based character so his attacks or more effective when he is in the air. When he is on the ground his attacks are not as effective.

I played through different characters but the one I played the most as was R-Bear. The difficulty was a little hard but not real frustrating. On the other hand it was not a cake walk. Even if you are having a hard time the game gives you several chances to earn extra lives. In addition you get a lot of chances to continue even if you run out of lives. I give the difficulty a 6 out of 10. I think that is pretty fair for this type of game and is pretty much the average of characters difficulty

Overall: 9

Well I never thought I would play a hack that could top the original game, but I have and done just that. Yes I said it, this hack is better than the original game. I really had fun playing this game and I find myself playing this version more than others. Everything a great game has this game has, which brings me into the positives.

I really like the idea of getting to play as the bad guys. I have always wanted what would the roles would be if the bad guys became playable. The plot explains that pretty well. To me getting to play as the bad guys or good guys if you wish adds something new. It seems like the makers of the game wanted to give the impression players were playing a different game. They certainly do that in this game. It is so easy to forget your playing a hack.

Getting an entire cast of characters to play through adds value to this game. It increases the depth and it is just fun to use different characters. As I mentioned I really liked it that I could play as R-Bear. R-Bear is my favorite because in the original game he was big, powerful and very though to beat. He is about the same as this game and his attacks really pack a punch. In addition, the music and sounds remaining the same really bumps up the rating. Of all Bare Knuckle games the second one had the best sounds. The difficulty is about right for this type of game.

Now, there was one minor issue in this game and I want to stress it was minor. A few of the characters seem to have their controls change speeds. Sometimes it seems like the controls speed up or slow down. I have to wonder though if the maker/s did that on purpose to reflect the characters strengths and weaknesses or if it was a minor problem? It is noticeable but nothing real serious either. Again its a minor issue.

Overall I give Syndicate Wars a 9 out of 10. This game is very fun play and you will not want to put it down. This is the type of game you want to play through again and again. In addition, this is a game that is fun for everybody even those that are not used to this type of game. It would be a good game to introduce somebody to the Bare Knuckle series. While the game is difficult in some sense its not too difficult that it would turn somebody away from the series. Would I recommend this game. By all means I would recommend this game you will not be disjointed

Anyway this concludes my review. I hope you take time to enjoy this game and I hope you have playing it like it I did. Blessings in Christ everybody and enjoy
