If you had a Sega Genesis Master System back in the day chances are you have heard of a game series called Streets of Rage (also known as Bare Knuckle).  Streets of rage was a series of beat em up games in the early 90's. The most popular one was Streets of Rage 2. Streets of Rage 2 is often ranked as one of the greatest Sega games of all time. It should be no surprise that several hacks exists of Streets of Rage 2. One of the hacks allows you to play as Mega Man (also known as Rock). I will be comparing this hack to the original game.

Story: 8

The story was changed somewhat to fit being able to play as Mega Man. Mister X was a mafia and syndicate leader. He was defeated by Axle, Blaze and Adam. Crime in the city dropped however all was not as it seemed to be. Crime started to take over the city again. As revenge X ambushes and kidnaps Adam.  Axle, Blaze, Skate (Adams young brother) and Max a world champion wrestler set out to take down Mister X once in for all. However, since it will not be as easy as it was last time the four friends get Mega Man to help them.  Mega Man heads out to stop X and help his new friends. To get to X Mega Man will have to battle some of the toughest criminals.

Okay, I really like how the story was changed to fit Mega Man playing into it. The game keeps most of the same plot. Streets of Rage 2 had a very awesome plot to it so it really did not need to be changed a lot. I give the plot a good solid 8 out of 10.

Graphics and Controls: 7

The game uses mostly the same graphics as the original game. The backgrounds have not been changed which they did not need to be because they are awesome. The colors are very nicely done and left unchanged. I really like the stage themes in this game as they are the original. However, there is one problem and to some it might not be a problem. Why did the maker of this game use Play Station Mega Man graphics. Streets of rage is a 16 byte game. It would have made more sense to use Mega Man on how he appears in Mega Ma 7 since that was also a 16 byte game. Using the playstation version of Mega Man kind of makes him seem out of place in this game. Mega Man is much larger than the enemies and he really stands out.

Mega Man controls pretty much the same as Axle would in the original game. Streets of rage had very good controls. I would argue the best controls of any Sega Game. This game keeps that same feeling. The controls are mostly good. The only thing is when Mega Man performs his powerful combo it does seem like the controls slow down a little bit. I wonder if that is because again due to the Play Station version of Mega Man being used in this game. Overall, I give the graphics and controls a good 7 out of 10. Using a higher byte version of Mega Man brings the rating down some.

Sounds: 9

What made Streets of Rage 2 so great was the amazing sounds. I mean it is so easy to start listening to the music in all of the stages and forget you have to beat up the bad guys. The sounds the enemies make some even laugh at you, and the sounds your character makes when beating up the bad guys is amazing. This game does not really change anything. The only difference is Mega Man's upper cut combo sounds like his Buster in Mega Man games. I actually kind of liked that and thought it was a nice touch. So yeah, I think 9 out of 10 sounds about right.

Replay Value: 9

What can I say I really enjoyed the original game as its one of my favorite Sega Games to play. I still play the original game time to time. Adding Mega Man, which is my favorite video game series, in the mix and you have a very fun game. Despite the few issues this game has I really enjoyed playing it.  Getting to play as Mega Man really drives the replay value up on this one.

Depth: 4

Okay this is a beat em up game so as one would expect the amount of depth is not really high in these type of games. However unlike other beat em up games there is some depth here. A lot of the stages have secret weapons and 1-ups that can be found. In addition, the stages are long and are often broken in segments so that adds some depth to it. It is not a high depth game. When I think of high depth games I think of games that have secret passages, secret rooms, secret items, and power ups to collect. Most of the Mega Man, Mario, Kirby and Donkey Kong Country games have high depth. This game does not have that type of depth to it. On the other hand when I think of fighting games that do not have a lot of depth (unless you count playing as a different character) I think of Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter. So after some thought I give the depth rating a 4 out of 10. Not a lot of depth but not absent either.

Difficulty: 7

The original Streets of Rage game's difficulty depended on who you play through the game as. But I only played through this game as Mega Man since he is the main focus in this hack.  The game surprisingly  has its difficult parts to it even as playing as Mega Man. The main thing is enemies just love to gang up on you in this game. They just love to ambush you and over run you with their numbers. Moreover, a lot of the enemies have weapons such as knives,  swords, and pipes. In addition, a few of the bosses are tough too. The Wrestling boss, Boxing Boss, and Mr X himself can be very hard. In fact, some of the enemies have a lot of health to them it takes a lot to knock them out. However, Mega Man's Uppercut combo really knocks out the enemies. In fact, on some enemies just one blow can take 40% of their health off. On the downside using the upper cut combo can drain your health too and cause you to get fatigued.

The good news is the game helps you out in a lot of ways. Snacks which restore health can easily be found in this game. Moreover, it is easy to get a weapon such as finding it or taking it from a bad guy. The weapons do a lot of damage saving you from having to use the combo move until you get surrounded. Also 1-ups are plentiful in this game. It should be noted if you get knocked out in a fight you can continue, as long as you have lives, right where you left off without having to start all over again. As I stated if you use Mega Man's combo it really mows down the enemies.

Thus, I give the difficulty a 7 out of 10. Streets of Rage 2 Mega Man is a difficult game but its very doable. Once you get the hang of it it becomes less difficult. It is not one of those games that is going to make you throw down the controller in frustration or anything like that. On the other hand its not a piece of cake either. Chances are you will get knocked out a few times in this game. But you should be alright due to the extra lives and weapons.

Overall Rating: 8.9

Wow what can I say this game was very fun to play and it was enjoyable. Taking one of my favorite Sega Games and adding one of my favorite video game characters of all times equals a very good game. That is pretty much what this hack is. This game has a lot going for it. However, the game did have a few issues. But I will start with the positives before the negatives.

I really liked the idea of bringing Mega Man into this game it was creative and it offered something new. As I have hinted it was like playing two games in one. Your playing a streets of rage game but you are also playing a Mega Man Game. If that is what the maker was aiming at he or she passed in that category. I liked how the game does not really change that much from the original game. Streets of Rage 2 was such a good game and a popular one at that. So, a lot of changes did not need to be made. The music, and sounds are the same. I also liked how they added Mega Man's Buster sound to his combo move. The difficulty is about right for these type of games.

Now the game did have a few issues to it. The first is I was hoping I would get to use Mega Man's Buster. I do not know why that was not included. I mean in the Robo Cop Hack Robo-Cop uses his gun as his weapon. So why could not Mega Man use his buster. Can you imagine Mega Man's powerful buster mowing down the enemies that would have been hilarious. I don't know why the maker did not include mega Man's buster as an attack. Second Mega Man's Sprites are way off. As I mentioned earlier in the review why did the maker use Play Station Mega Man instead of the 16 byte Mega Man. He just seems out of place mainly because the type of Mega Man used is not 16 byte. Last but not least the controls where just a little bit off. When Mega Man does his combo it seems like the controls slow down. Personally, I think that is because Mega Man is not 16 bytes in this game like the game runs on.

Overall, I give the game a solid 8.9 rating. I really enjoyed and had fun playing this game. This game has a lot going for it as I mentioned. The issues with this game are very minor. In fact, a lot of people would not be bothered by these issues and like I said they are pretty minor. This is a game that can be enjoyed by people aged 10 and up. Even if somebody has not played Bare Knuckle before this game would be alright to play. I highly recommend this game for anybody 10 and up. If you enjoyed Streets of Rage and like Mega Man at the same time this is the ideal game. The difficulty is difficult but not unbearable. So would I recommend this game? Yes I would highly recommend this game. I don't think anyone would be disappointed. I hope you take time to play this game and I hope you enjoy it like I did.

Blessings in Christ and happy gaming.
