Late 2017 brought something Sonic fans were waiting for after over a year. These were, in fact, the 25th anniversary games. First we got Sonic Mania in mid August (late August for PCs). This game was exceptional, receiving the highest amount of praise and review scores in almost 15 years, not to mention it was created by some of the most prominent names in the entire fanbase. Then, in early November, we gained the other half of the bargain: Sonic Forces. This one didn't really receive as much praise as was hoped, with negative reviews and just general hate toward it. But does it really deserve the hate it's receiving? That's why I'm here.

GRAPHICS: 9
The graphics are great and do a good job capturing the atmosphere of the game. The levels are very beautiful, with Green Hill having a tiny bit of a desert motif with it this time around, Chemical Plant snowing, and many other examples. This game looks exceptionally well on hardware like the PS4 and Xbox One, with the Switch having a bit of a downgrade due to hardware limitations. The lighting is beautiful, and there is just so much to talk about regarding the graphics. A couple things are a bit more simplistic this time around, such as the title screen and HUD, which I personally think looks nice.

SOUND: 8
The songs in this game are great. Each character has a different style of music to match their play styles, levels, and personalities. Sonic has the more traditional stage music, though with a bit more techno, the avatar has techno music, and Classic Sonic has the retro Genesis style music. The new villain of the game, Infinite, has a theme song that seems to blend trap, metal, and dubstep, and all the bosses have a techno/dubstep style (with the exception of Classic Sonic's boss). Shadow even makes an appearance as a playable character, with his stage's themes having a bit of an edgier techno vibe. Overall, there is a lot of techno, but my only complaint about the music is that in three levels (avatar's Chemical Plant, Death Egg, and Metropolis (no, not Metropolis Zone from Sonic 2 but possibly Grand Metropolis from Heroes)) sound very similar. On one final not, I would like to mention how good the main theme of the game, Fist Bump, is. If only it would play on the title screen or have more songs with its motif.

I'm putting these two together because they fit together so well that I can't put them separate. This game has a lot of play styles to chose from. These include the traditional boost gameplay of Sonic, the new Wispon gameplay of the avatar, and the traditional 2D sidescrolling gameplay of Classic Sonic. Speaking of the avatar, you may be curious as to who this new, mysterious character is. Why, none other than YOU! Well, your OC (original character). You can customize the avatar's appearance with what species you want (wolf, dog, bird, cat, hedgehog, rabbit, or bear), gender, fur/skin/eye color, countless costumes, and Wispons. This part of the game is very fun and unique, creating your own hero to help aid Sonic on his journey to save the world from Eggman's wrath. This game adds the addition of missions, including a daily mission, and completing said missions unlocks gear for your avatar. These include getting an S rank on a level, using a specific Wispon in a specific level, and even customizing your avatar. Speaking of levels, there are 30 main levels with a few bonus levels, each containing 5 red star rings for a total of 150 red star rings. There are also SOS missions, where animals must be rescued. These can either be red (clear as a randomly selected avatar), blue (save an avatar trapped in a capsule), or green (bring a rental avatar and clear). There is even DLC that allows you to play as Shadow for the first time in a main series game in over 10 years, though he plays similarly to Sonic. He comes with 3 extra levels in Episode Shadow, and can even be playable in Sonic's main levels. One problem I have with the levels is that they are too short, so just as they're getting good they'll end. Once the game is completed, you can make multiple avatars. There's not much content that would make one play the game after beating it, but what it does have is good enough.

STORY: 8
Eggman, who is fed up with being defeated by Sonic multiple times, infuses a stone called the Phantom Ruby (see Mania) with a jackal (who now goes by Infinite). This stone has many strange powers, with its most notable being virtual reality. There are a few comics from before the game's release that set up the plot of the game. Sonic faces this new foe, along with Metal Sonic, Chaos (Sonic Adventure), Zavok (Sonic Lost World), and, most shockingly, rival hedgehog Shadow. Sonic, who is now presumed dead, was captured by Eggman, who then proceeds to build his Eggman Empire. A resistance was formed in rebellion of Eggman's oppression. Sonic, of course, was alive, but tortured for 6 months after his defeat. Later, Classic Sonic appears from... somewhere for some reason? In Mania he was sucked into a portal with the Phantom Ruby, but why he came over 6 months after the Phantom Ruby is unknown. The plot has many plot holes. For example, one of the biggest plot holes as of late is why Knuckles isn't guarding the Master Emerald, but that's been somewhat of a mystery in the past few games. Where are the Chaos Emeralds, and why didn't the Resistance get them earlier? If Blaze was able to leave her dimension for Sonic's birthday and to visit an interstellar amusement park, then why was she not able to assist Sonic and friends during the Eggman Empire's reign? Those are just a few examples, but without those tiny details, the plot works.

DIFFICULTY: 6
This game is easy. Most of the levels are short, some of Sonic's levels can be completed by just holding the boost button, and a lot of the bosses are just laughably easy. Some people complain that the levels are too linear, but that didn't really bother me too much. Classic Sonic isn't as good as he was in Generations, but he still controls okay.

OVERALL: 7.8
Overall, Sonic Forces is an okay, average game. Does it deserve all the hate? No. Could it be better? Yes. Is it flawed? Very much, but really every Sonic game has its flaws, and every Sonic game can be fixed.
