Our beloved hero Bomberman has never missed the chance to star in every game console in the markets. He had seldom appearances in the 80s, but in the 90s it rose to fame and started appearing literally everywhere, be it console or handheld, to give fans the chance of bombing things up. By the start of the 21st century, the sixth generation of consoles was at its peak and Bomberman, having already appeared on the pioneering Dreamcast, landed on Gamecube with this massive game.

GRAPHICS: 10

It didn’t have the most realistically looking graphics of its time, but still it was very well designed. The several different environments found throughout the game were not only amazing, they also had some nice dynamic effects like the flowing rivers. Character animations were also incredible, the movements were very fluid and it had no graphical glitches, which gave it an edge over many games of its time (and even some modern ones as well).

SOUND: 10

On one hand, the music was awesome. Maybe it has no track you’d be playing in your MP3, but still the melodies are quite good for a background. The pace change for heated battles was also very good, giving the game a bit more of speed and action. Definitely not the game you’d want to turn off the music in, specially when sound effects aren’t that important for you’ll be just hearing explosions.

On the other hand, and speaking of sound effects, the detail given to sounds was impressive. The different kinds of explosions you could trigger each produced a unique and distinct sound, the water drop sound of the Bouncing Bomb was lovely and the list just goes on and on. Playing this game without volume is an absolute disgrace.

ADDICTIVENESS: 10

The story mode uses bombs in a different way than the battle mode, which coupled with all other minor changes essentially makes each mode a game on its own. Not only is the story mode quite appealing, the battle mode can have you glued for hours upon hours. The traditional battle system, enhanced by all kinds of items and different bombs without forgetting about stage hazards; Revenge Battle, where you play from the outside of the arena trying to bomb some poor moles; and of course my favorite, Dodge Battle, where bombs instead fall from the sky while you run for your life trying to stay safe as more different bombs increasingly more powerful keep on landing everywhere.

STORY: 6

Some scientific discovery will lead to a new era of knowledge, but should it fall in the wrong hands the world could be destroyed. This game also followed this simple strategy: the Bomb Elements, crystals carrying a yet unknown energy, had their freighter attacked by the evil forces wanting to use them for destruction, which lead to the crystals to scatter through a distant planet where the story mode takes place. In his way, Bomberman will have to face most of his lifelong enemies and rivals in an attempt to retrieve the Bomb Elements and keep them safe from harm.

Not a bad story, though in reality you end up facing more enemies from the world itself rather than those who want to defeat Bomberman for their evil plans to come true. Besides, Bomberman’s enemies are either top bosses or the simplest of enemies outclassed by the world’s “inhabitants”, so the real enemy isn’t faced as much as a central antagonist would need.

DEPTH: 9

The story mode is quite long, featuring several worlds. You visit almost all possible environments: deserts, forests, ruins and settlements, ice plains, the bottom of an ocean and even the planet’s moon. While it goes quite deep and features several levels on each environment, I honestly dislike the presence of levels which are only a Boss Battle with nothing else to do, even if said battles can last for longer than the average maze run level.

DIFFICULTY: 9

The levels feature labyrinths, puzzles and enemies. As we move on, they get more and more complicated, as expected, but things get a twist with game mechanics. First we have the Bomb Attributes, which can be fire, wind, water or light; each attribute makes the bomb to produce a different effect upon exploding, and sometimes you totally need a certain attribute to beat a level. Getting these attributes requires minigames to be beaten, which are scattered through the world’s levels, and then you must find the special place where you can merge each attribute with your standard bombs.

We cannot forget about Charabombs and Charabomb battles, which take even more RPG traits. Charabombs are characters you can have “equipped” which can also become stronger with some items hidden throughout the levels. They give you interesting perks, like remote control to explode bombs exactly whenever you want, reducing the damage inflicted to you and even funny things like jumping on bombs dropped below. All these perks will come in handy in certain situations, so you must make sure to possess each and all Charabombs to secure clearing all levels if you apply the necessary skill.

Combining everything, we have a game where each detail matters and you can’t leave any zone of a level without being visited just in case you miss something big. The slightest of slips can basically block your way in a level, forcing you to go all the way back, if you ever knew where you left what you’re missing!

OVERALL: 9

No matter how many years pass, this game will keep having a soft spot in my heart. The story mode is a total challenge to your brain and your skills, while the battle modes are an immense amount of fun in several ways. Kind of complete, but it still misses a few things here and there.

POSITIVE

-Challenging story mode. Beating a hard level is an incredible feeling, but it can also lead to exasperation. So many things to try, so many ways to fall, but what’s a game without the thrill of a challenge that can drive you insane?

-Battle mode. The roster of items, all the kinds of bombs and their effects, the different sets of rules… No battle is like the previous one, giving players an infinite amount of possibilities and an equally big amount of fun for hours straight.

-Happy-go-lucky music. No way you can feel down while listening to it, specially the fast paced tunes of the battle mode garnished with the massive explosions ensuing all around.

NEGATIVE

-Lack of real enemies. Throughout the standard level, you only find hoodlums moving around aimlessly which pose no real threat. Only later on do they start to be kind of a threat with some armament, but way too later on. Besides that, standard levels are filled with the world’s inhabitants, far more challenging than the real enemy. The remaining enemies are top-notch bosses, which corresponds to their role in the plot, but the lack of an in-between these bosses and hoodlums is a big letdown with the plot this game has.
