Pit Boss II The games aren't particularly impressive, and even with graphics which appear error-free, there seem to be missing aspects. for example, the horses are invisible!

Rompers (Japan)

It's a Baby! It's a Farmer! It's Chap!
Welcome to one of the cutest and most confusing little games Namco probably ever brought forth:  Rompers!  In this game, it is difficult to tell whether the main character is a baby or a farmer, whether the second-hand villain is a vampire or evil fairy or succubus, whether the developers invented Spongebob or encouraged drug use, and whether the walls are meant to keep things in or keep things out.

However, this game is not without its charm.  Originally at a complete loss, I had to do a bit of research because the game is in Japanese and was never given an English release.  However, the game's objectives are pretty simple:  avoid the baddies, squash them by knocking over walls, and collect all the keys.  The game even has a two player mode for those who wish to sit and take turns completing levels.

Graphics: 8/10
The game's graphics are actually pretty impressive for an arcade machine.  Full of vivid color and pretty scenes, the developers did a great job in creating an unforgettable cast.  The names are a bit fun due to the game being created in Japan, but each character is distinguishable and relatable.  A set number of baddies appears in each level and after they are destroyed, they re-spawn via polka dotted eggs. In case you do not believe me about their adorableness, take a look for yourself. Here are the characters in the order they appear.

Pyokorin are white ghost like creatures who have no special ability.Kerara are pink triceratops who blow fire.
Gororin are armadillos who cause destruction by rolling along any open path.Bekabeka are yellow squares that may or may not be Spongebob's ancestors.  They collapse in an attempt to mock the walls and squash Chap.Oogumo are striped spiders (spider-bee crossbreed, maybe?) who attempt to ensnare Chap.  The webs must be destroyed by crushing them with walls.Todorin are purple moles / sea-lions who disappear underground and spit ... The shooter that changed my views.
So I was going about my usual vizzed business when I stumbled across a game that excited me so much I just HAD to stop what I was doing and share my discovery. I have been wanting to write a review after seeing so many talented ones being submitted, but I did not feel particularly moved to write about any of the games I was coming across.

However, that changed when I went about testing this game.  I was instantly hooked by the amazing graphics and game play, which is quite astonishing.  I normally loathe shooters... but this one impressed my socks off and I could not stop playing it!  If you are wondering why, read on.

Graphics: 10/10
This game draws the player in from the minute it starts.  Immediately dropped into a mission, the player assumes control over a character in a room which allows 2 directional movement.  Thrust into action, it is hard not to note how smoothly the character moves around the room.  Player-friendly notes pop up in an 'on-the-job' style training.  These direct the player in completing the mission so that instructions are never necessary. Once the simple mission is completed, the player is rewarded with a stunning scene of fire and smoke:

Don't believe that image is from an arcade game?  Better believe it, because GAPS did an amazing job developing this game.  Released in 1999, it somehow beat Perfect Dark's release in 2000, and yet this game made me think of Rare's production with each minute I played.

The cut-scenes are not the only mind-blowing graphics to enjoy.  Every stage is stuffed with color and appealing to look at. There was not a single stage that I regretted playing, and I found none of them to be abrasive to the eyes. In addition to the rooms themselves, characters were unique and identifiable.  For example, if you take a look at the images below, there is a really large blue guy in the left corner of the first image, and a ... Super Glob

Globular Fun

Overall: 7.5/10

Sometimes while testing games, I come across a shining jewel that makes me smile, and other times I discover, well, a slimier variety of fun.  Such is the case with the game Super Glob... a classic that everyone should try at least once.  If you can imagine making pacman less stable, throwing him in a plat forming game, and giving him much cooler enemies.... you'd end up with this game.

In Super Glob, you play a blue blob named Toby who likes to eat... a lot.   While I'm fairly certain the designers of this game never meant to promote gluttony, I'm sure they got exactly what they hoped for after the game was released.  In fact, this game was so popular that another version called Beastie Feastie was developed many years later. With slightly different graphics, Beastie Feastie quickly became a favorite and even encourages tons of fan art even today.

Talking about Super Glob, however...

For 24 levels, Toby hops around avoiding creatures like gators, monkeys, and pigs, while using elevators to move around each stage and even kill predators.  The nemesis sprites are so cute and Toby is so amazing that it's hard to let this game go.

Graphics: 8/10
Did I already mention that the graphics are adorable?  For an older arcade game, the graphics really aren't that bad.  They're a little blocky of course, but the quality (which only an arcade game possesses) is still quite intact.  The colors are bright and cheery, the foods are easily discernible, and the enemy sprites are both recognizable and alluring.  Indeed, I find it astonishing that the game artists were so effectively able to exhibit each small character.

Some of the creatures include (but are not limited to) a rabbit, a crocodile, a monkey, and a pig (affectionately? called a porky).

What a kick!

Overall: 6/10
Good evening, lovely vizzed users!  I know it's been awhile since life swept me away from writing reviews, so I decided to write a piece on one of the most interesting games I've seen in the past two months.  Although I've always been an absolute fan of breakout games, I have to say that I have NEVER witnessed one quite so unique as this one.  I've seen all sorts of themes, all sorts of power ups, and all sorts of plots added into the original concept, but I've never seen one that swept me up in surprise.  I wasn't even impressed with any aspect of the game other than its individuality.  A brilliant concept and well conceived, but very, very poorly executed.

In this rip off of breakout, the player handles a paddle to control a soccer ball which whizzes around a field.  The ball strikes soccer players or is kicked around by them, and a goalie seems to be the ultimate villain.  With many unique aspects, I'd say this game was at least worth taking a peek at.

Graphics: 3/10
Although I wouldn't expect 3-D graphics with dazzling color from a game this old... I have to say that the graphics leave MUCH to be desired.  There's just too much going on with individual sprites, and simply too much to look at when the player's eyes are trying to follow an already too small soccer ball.  There are many different sprites which roam a garishly stripped field, and they serve as the bricks meant to be broken.  Some of the soccer players are 'unbreakable' while others require more than one hit.

Instead of making individual sprites easy to spot, each is only slightly different from the last and almost blurs into the other players thanks to a lack of space.  In addition to badly chosen colors and designs, the sprites move around in very odd patterns.... often moving in waves, circles, or marching band-esque patterns.  The lack of space also makes it very hard t... Meikyu Jima (Japan)

A Frozen Treat
Overall: 6.5/10

Yet another great arcade game, Meikyu Jima seems to be a jewel of its time.  Although my overall score may be a little misleading, I think this game is absolutely awesome, and the main reason for the low score is due to the music category in and of itself.  Only ever reproduced for one additional system (the NES), Meikyu Jima is a game all about timing, patterns, placements, and reflexes.

In this game, you play a little snowball wearing earmuffs who wants to gather pouches for some reason.  Since the game is in Japanese, I'm not sure what the bags contain, but our hero (Kinkle) certainly wants them, and I imagine to save his icy world from some fate.  While trying to gather these bags, he's got to navigate logic puzzles by placing and pushing ice blocks, dodging enemies, swinging mallets, and making use of large springs.  He can also place buttons as barriers or navigational tools, and the during our hero's whole adventure, he must avoid death by his own schemes.

The great thing is that the puzzles in this game really are difficult, so my affinity for puzzles games was really magnified by the challenge Meikyu Jima provides.  So many aspects affect the main character's success that they must all be considered, and thus, playing this game will greatly exercise your mind.

GRAPHICS: 8/10
First, let's talk about the environment. The graphics of this game are alluringly colorful, with each stage having its own theme of dark and light tiles which signify various heights of the stage.  Now, when I do speak of tile heights, there aren't differing heights of characters and places to play.  However, lighter colors are areas in which only bad guys can travel.  Those bad guys treat the darker tiles as walls, although the hero of the game can travel over dark and light tiles alike.  This is why I viewed the two colors as representing two heights;the lighter tiles were an... Marvel Land: Aptly Named
OVERALL: 8.5/10

In case you don't like to read, I can summarize this whole review in one sentence: this game is definitely something to marvel at!

Have you ever wanted to play a classic platforming game, but at the same time found yourself wary of playing another copy cat?  If so, this brilliant masterpiece is for you!  I was absolutely astounded to come across this game, and like many of its caliber, my only serious complaint is that it's TOO SHORT!  It seems as though game developers really get a kick out of creating games that make you desire more!

In this lovely gem, you can work your way through four worlds with four stages each (plus a bonus round for each world). The mini-boss games are different from any other I have experienced, wherein each mini-boss is defeated by use of a mini-game.  You don't even have to defeat the mini-boss to move onward, and instead each world victory simply increases Prince Paco's chances with the end battle to save Princess Luxy.

This game must have really been overlooked for the past few gaming generations because I was surprised to find that only two versions of this game were ever made.  The arcade version came out in 1989 and was Japanese, whereas a second version came out in 1991 for the Sega Genesis sporting new names, the English translation, and slightly modernized graphics and music. From what I noticed, the newer game has -slightly- different stage templates and also a more complicated system for defeating enemies, but it holds the same charm as the original.

In fact, I think that's probably the perfect phrase for this game:  Stunningly charming.

Mag Max

Monotonous but worth a shot (or five hundred).
Overall: 6.5/10
For an arcade game that's hardly any younger than GBA consoles, Mag Max is an incredibly impressive game.  If it weren't for the few little signs here and there that give its age away, I'd say this masterpiece is comparable even to some modern age games.   Like all games, it has a few set backs, but I personally felt there weren't as many as would be needed to take enjoyment away from the game play.

Interestingly enough, this game was also one of the first (if not the first) to have a feature which allowed players to fast forward through the shooting and scrolling.  Most arcade games before this one had not even considered an increased speed to be possible, and this feature of the game sets it miles ahead of its competitors.  It's a shame that other neat aspects weren't flaunted more often, but I'll talk about those further along in the review.

GRAPHICS: 7/10
Fast scrolling wasn't the only unique feature of Mag Max.  The developers of the game decided to be brave when they programmed it, and it happened to be one of the first scrolling shooters which had 3-D scrolling.  What does this mean?  Not only does the camera scroll forward through a stage, but the player can control their sprite to move further away in the distance horizontally, or closer to the perspective of the player.  Instead of being restricted to forwards motion, players can guide their sprite in any direction they wish.  This was an amazing feature for the time, and this alone is worthy of high praise.

Here's part of the issue: the 3-D scrolling is only limited to the above ground play. As soon as you strive to play underground, the programming resorts back to straightforward movement with no deviation other than height.  This was especially disappointing to me because I found the below surface portion of the game to be more interesting (visually) than the above surface.  Nonetheless, the 3-D scr... Block Buster Indeed!
OVERALL: 7/ 10

I decided recently that I wanted to look up a childhood favorite of mine and set out to find it on vizzed.  I'm sure it comes as no surprise to anyone that my search was rewarded rather quickly.  However, I still experienced quite a shock.... such a classic with such a big name... and not ONE person has written a review for it!  Gathering my jaw off the floor, I just knew I had to remedy this horrible oversight!

In case there is someone out there who miraculously does not know about this game, let me explain the basic gist of it. Arkanoid is a game in which you control a 'paddle' across the bottom of the screen with movement restricted to the horizontal axis.  A ball bounces around the screen and you can not let it pass your paddle and hit the screen bottom at any time.  Each stage is also filled with colored blocks, and they are destroyed upon contact with the ball.  If you can destroy all the blocks without losing all your lives, you move on to the next stage.  Along the way, you may be set back by bad guys which enter each stage, and you may be helped or hurt by 'pills' that may fall from the blocks.

A very fast paced and addictive game, it was actually created and designed after another game called Breakout.  Although this may offer Breakout some claim to fame, I've always considered Arkanoid to be the better known and more successful game.  It was so popular in fact, that seven games have been officially released as a part of the series over the past few decades: Tournament Arkanoid, Revenge of DOH, DOH it Again, Arkanoid Returns, Arkanoid DS, Arkanoid Live, and Arkanoid Plus (for WiiWare.) For true lovers, it should be no surprise that spin offs are STILL being made to this day.  I see massive amounts of clones for this game and there aren't very many I would consider bad.

While I actually know of several clones I enjoy more than the original, I can't h... Read the rest of this Review

Making Mustaches Look Good!
Overall Rating: 8/ 10Meet Mustache Boy: the first boy in history to fly through space sporting a handlebar mustache..... and looking good doing it!In all honesty, I find the title of this game a little strange. I almost have to wonder if a little boy became frustrated with the caterpillars on his upper lip and decided that he would put his frustration to use by catching in space balloons and teasing voracious space aliens. All joking aside though, this game is FANTASTIC.  It's rare that I find a 25 year old arcade game of this quality, and even stranger that I'd be willing to stand at the machine and feed it every one of my quarters.  The basic premise of this game is straightforward:  Step on every tile in the map at least once while avoiding death.  If you survived by the time you've touched every tile, you move on to the next stage.GRAPHICS: 9/ 10This game has some of the better graphics I've seen for arcade games.  For a 25 year old game, the images are of high quality and impressively clean.  Ranging from color schemes to sprite composition, I couldn't find a glaring flaw in the graphics if I tried.  For example, I really enjoyed the lighting details found on the blocks which form walls.  The attention to those tiny details allows the blocks to have a smooth, rounded appearance to them.  In most older games I've played, those blocks would be garishly pixelated and horribly squared.  Instead, the player is met with a very aesthetically pleasing border which doesn't make anyone feel dizzy.First, the color palettes.  I have got to say that I LOVE the color schemes of this game.  Whoever designed the game did a great job with picking colors that do not clash or brazenly take over the screen. Most of the landscape colors are subtle pastels and easy on the eyes.  Whenever Mustache Boy steps on a tile, it changes colors so that the player knows which tiles are taken care of and which are left.  ... If Walls Could Talk...
OVERALL RATING: 9.5/ 10

If walls could talk, I am sure they would be talking about this game.  ;)  Now, before anyone goes crying foul for my overall rating, take the time to read my review, as I explain each category and how I think everything comes together to be much higher than the actual average.  In truth, I usually bring my overall score down if it is too high mathematically, but I enjoyed this game so much that I just could not justify downgrading its awesomeness.

You would think that a game which seems to take its roots from Pac- man could not beat the original in like- ability.  While classics have their charm, I chose to review this game because in my opinion, Maze Invaders is much, much more fun that Pac- man.  There are tons of creative mazes to work your way through, the graphics are extremely colorful and cute, the variety in enemies and maps and walls is impressive, and the game itself is downright addicting.  If you want to spend a few hours playing an awesome arcade game, this is certainly one to try.  Gather delicious fruit, shoot persistent enemies, avoid blood- thirsty bullets, work your way through shifting mazes, and get to a green door all before the timer runs out!  Everything Pac- man was missing, this game has.

GRAPHICS: 9/ 10
It probably seems like there is not much to say about a game's graphics when the game consists of mazes and Pac- man like creatures. However, I found this game's graphics to be pretty stunning, all things considered.  Most of the maps were on black- ish backgrounds, but unlike many arcade mazes, each map had its own set of very distinct colors.  The color set is very bright and bold, amazingly without being obnoxious.  Even though some colors pop up repetitively to help the player recognize wall types, there is enough creativity in the development of the game that the repetition is hardly worth a second glance. &nbs... Sim Ant
12-15-12 02:48 PM
I prefer Molehills
Overall Rating: 4/ 10

This game was so mind- numbing that I really couldn't even motivate myself to come up with a catchier title.  I usually enjoy simulation games but this one did not live up to its hype at all.  You play the role of a yellow ant who is the 'general' of a black ant colony.  Your goal is to gather food, beat the red ants, breed enough ants to move onward, and eventually conquer the yard and the doghouse and the human house.  I've always enjoyed building up a population and managing a society, but usually games like this also have a lot more to offer.  I found myself struggling to keep my head up and eyes open as I performed monotonous task after monotonous task.  The worst part about this game is that nothing hardly ever changes.  The bad guys are the same, the food is the same, the 'random events' are the same, the background images are the same......  It just starts to all blur together much like a swarm of ... well, ants.  The lines between reality and slumber really start to blur until it's impossible to distinguish one feature from another.

Now don't get me wrong.  Had the game say.... been faster, I might have enjoyed it JUST a little more.  I'm usually a pretty patient person, but when you have to deal with repetitive graphics, repetitive play, AND slow progress.... too much is just too much.  For a time when simulation games weren't very popular, I'm sure there was a reason it attracted attention from the younger kids.  Even when I first started the game, I was humored and amused by several aspects of it.  It wasn't until my third of fourth victory of a yard spot that I just couldn't take it any more and the game lost all its charm.

There are three modes of game play: the tutorial, a sandbox mode called "Full Game", and a "Scenario" mode which consists of 8 battles.

Speechless (Both myself and the Game)
OVERALL: 8.5/ 10

This was the first game I've played in a while that quite literally left me speechless.  The weird thing is that I didn't even really -like- the game that much, and yet I couldn't stop playing it, and I certainly don't even want to rate it any lower.  My first inclination was to rate the game a 9, and so I had to stop and remind myself that the math wasn't agreeing with my gut reaction.  ha!

It's the strangest thing, but this game is A- MAZE- ING. (See what I did there?  ;) )  Again, let me remind you that I wasn't its biggest fan.  I'm not typically into sci- fi games, and the graphics and colors were a bit 'off' to me, despite the widely acclaimed praise they've received elsewhere.

In this game, you play a young physics professor named Lester.  You travel through a maze filled planet, battle bad guys, solve logical problems, and constantly re- strategize.  To me, it was akin to one of those old time MUD games, but without the commands.  Its unique graphics and compelling game play really sucked me in to hours of fun.

GRAPHICS: 6/ 10
The graphics were my least favorite part of the game.  As I did some research into its history and popularity, I was surprised to find that the graphics actually seemed to be a huge factor of its likeability among gamers. I kept reading about players who though the emotions expressed by the characters were profoundly accurate, but I don't even recall faces being shown more than twice in the whole game.  And of those two times, I wouldn't exactly say the facial expressions were riveting or made me empathize with the characters at all.  I have no idea why people though the emotions displayed were amazing... no idea at all.

Most of the game consists of a single color scheme: blue and black.  Almost everything is some shade of one of these colors, though it's not cone in a poor e... Read the rest of this Review

Cats and Snakes and Mice, oh My!
OVERALL RATING: 5/ 10

This is the first game where I didn't really have to debate over any ratings in any of the categories, and as you can see, I felt pretty uniformly about each area.  I wouldn't say that this game was an awful one and considering its day and age, it's one of the better arcade games out there simply for the sheer amount of levels it has.

Amazingly, doing research on this game yields few results, and I think it's the first game where I found absolutely nothing on its back story.  I did discover that the actual machine this game was played on is pretty rare and near impossible to find, making it a collector's dream.  However, I could find little else and I wasn't even able to find a back story to it! Therefore, this is the first game I also did not rate for its story.

The game is pretty straightforward: at first resembling pacman, it clearly becomes obvious that this game has a different goal altogether.  You play the roll of a mouse running along pathways which contain flags at every intersection.  Connect the flags around empty spaces and avoid the enemies.  Once you've connected all the flags, the level is won and you move on to the next.

GRAPHICS 5/ 10
The graphics are certainly comparable, at least, to the original pacman images.  Simple and block- ish in nature, they bare minimal resemblance to the characters and objects they are supposed to represent.  The cat is unmistakably a cat, the snake is recognizable as such, and even the mouse with his big pointy ears is easy enough to point out.  However, I'm sure it's a matter of generic gaming sprites that allows players to recognize the characters.  If one were to truly and carefully observe the graphics, they'd notice the lack of detail and form which make the characters look almost more like mass- less blobs.  At least its easy to tell what each creature is supposed to be though, which is an accomplis... Mario, We Have a Problem!
OVERALL RATING: 6/10

For a game that pretty much mimics Mario Kart, I'd expect to rate such a game much higher.  However, due to the lack of tracks, I simply could not justify a higher score for this game.  Otherwise?  This really is a pretty decent game.  As I mentioned, it's basically exactly like Mario Kart in every shape and fashion.  It's got zany characters, quick and colorful tracks floating in strange colorful abysses, crazy obstacles to block your paths, and objects to disgruntle your opponents.  It's even got little yellow zippers to push your car past its maximum speed.

Thus, if you like Mario Kart but crave a variance in play, this might be a good game to try out.  Just don't expect it to keep you amused for too terribly long.  It's cute and somewhat simple, but there's not much to hold your interest after you go through the four tracks.  You might enjoy playing this in multi-player mode, but since this can't be played in netplay, that's worthless to discuss that here on vizzed.

GRAPHICS: 8/10
While the graphics aren't overbearingly attractive, they're not half bad either.  I think the color scheme of the first track is grotesque, but I can't deny it's colorful and besides that, the other tracks look much nicer.  The characters themselves are also colorful and cute, though a few of them look too similar for my taste.

One of the things I like about this game is how crazy the characters in the game are.  Whether you're talking about drivers, road obstacles, or opponent deterrents, the sprites are hilarious!  One of the things I find most amusing is that large walking boulders manage to hinder your racing just as effectively as little green caterpillars!  The other two critters that might try to block your path appear to be pink fairies and vultures resembling a starving and taller koopa troopa.

Bored Boarding (for dogs and horses)
OVERALL RATING: 4/10

For a game that has its own web page, I have to be honest in saying that I expected a lot more.  While the game isn't horrible, it's also not horribly entertaining.  The game is in German which meant that understanding the story would have been impossible without Google, but not being able to read along didn't really hinder the game.  The controls and goals were pretty obvious, so playing was easy enough to figure out.

That being said, the game really seemed quite pointless.  Most pet simulation games are, but most games in this genre also have a lot more to offer in terms of tasks, animals, and progress.  I played the game for a longer amount of time than I imagine most doing, simply so that I could write a more effective and informational review.  Considering there are a plethora of games out there which offer more (and are readily available!) however, I don't see any reason for a single gamer to waste their time on this one.

By the way, the title in English is "Bibi and Tina: Holidays on the Martin".

GRAPHICS: 5/10
The graphics are arguable the worst part of this game.  When the game first starts up, the player is presented with comic strip like images.  These actually weren't all that bad.  They were colorful, and even with the language barrier, they were clear enough to get the point across.  The two main characters are inside their house, watching the rain pour down their window when a dog shows up on their farm.  Watching the sad animal outside in the downpour, they feel pity for it and ask their mother to take care of it.  The mother says yes, but reminds them that taking care of the puppy is a lot of work to add on top of all their already existing duties.  The kids assure her that they can manage the extra responsibility, and the game begins.

After seeing the colorful images while watching the long-winded story take place,... Read the rest of this Review

Spy vs. Spy is one of those classics I played as a kid, but had completely forgotten as an adult.  My low rating however, is simply due to the ethics of mathematics and I was actually more inclined to rate it a 6/10.  This game is simple in nature and yet it's charm is unmatched by many of its competitors.  It's no wonder, to me at least, that this game was actually released through more than half a dozen systems before it came out on the NES.  It's value is simply improved by having a partner to play it with, but I could undoubtedly play this for a good hour before getting bored of matching the computer.  While I realize an hour might not seem like a long time to keep someone's interest, that hour isn't one I would regret, placing it above many games in the same 'hour- life' category.

In Spy vs. Spy, you play an agent crow whose goal is to collect four items, avoid or defeat an opponent agent, and then be the first one out a specially marked door.  (In training mode, you only need two items.)  However, there's a definitely a little more strategy to the game, which I discuss under the difficulty category.  The strategy that must be employed to win is the alluring factor to the game.  The fact that there are only eight levels, on the other hand, is disappointing.  If there were more levels, I could easily play Spy vs. Spy for more than an hour.

GRAPHICS: 5/10
The graphics are really not that impressive, but then again, they don't need to be.  The garishly drawn crows are hardly recognizable as such, but their humorously shaped heads make up for that fact.  The actual rooms and furniture are reminiscent of the basic 3-D point- perspective drawings I was forced to draw in CAD programs way back in high school.  They're not very detailed, but they give the player a good sense of 'front' and 'back', while offering depth to any motion as ... Arctic Tale

The Fun is Frozen
OVERALL RATING: 2.5/10

Arctic Tale is one of those games that tries to draw you in with cute fluffy animals and then turns out to be more 'hoo ha' than actual enlivening content and game play.  It's got everything going for it when you consider the fact that most kids are drawn to exotic animals, but even the graphics can only make up for the lack of imagination for so long.  Based off the National Geographic documentary of the same title, there's no denying that more could have been done to keep players occupied.  Sure, you get to play as one of three animals and the game advertises your ability to explore, hunt, and fend for the cute animations' lives.... but in reality playing this game winds down to clicking some buttons just to watch a graphic blink out of or into existence.

GRAPHICS: 4/10
When you're playing one of three animals in the freezing arctic environment, what more is there to see after you've witnessed all the snow and ice?  Even the creatures chosen to be a part of the game are mostly white.  The walrus is the only exception to the color scheme, but when his only use is to swim under water... it's not as though he offers a huge relief to the game's visual monotony.  Thus, the game mainly consists of white, blue, and a little bit of brown.  Although this is understandable, it's disappointing that the artists didn't, at the least, create more colorful mini-games that would allow players to break free and taste a little eye candy.

With that being said, the cuteness of the sprites are really the only aspect of the game that might draw players in. There are grown polar bears, the baby polar bear, bunnies, an arctic fox, and a walrus.  However, when the only impressive part of the game happens to be the cute animals, it's a shame to note that the creators of the game didn't add more.  It makes sense to me, after all, to make the best of any winning characteristic, and it's not as ... A Knockout, or Should-be-Knocked-Out?
A review requested by james44028 :

OVERALL RATING: 6.8/10

For all those Sonic fans out there:  Ever wonder what happens when someone tries to combine Sonic style platforms with rpg's and Super Smash Brothers?  Play this game and you'll know exactly what happens.

I guess the level of enjoyment one gets from this game relates directly to how big of a fan they are for the little blue hedgehog addicted to speed.  I personally did not find the game much fun at all, but I've also never been a huge fan of Sonic, and the only time I succeed in Super Smash Brothers is when I -attempt- to be pummeled.  However, this being said, I can easily see why others might enjoy this whimsical game.

The plot starts off with Sonic finding a robot called a Gizoid on the beach.  Trying to revive the creature through his powers, Sonic inadvertently links to the Gizoid and it follows all his commands.  He takes it to Tails, who discovers that it can copy fighting moves and become more powerful by observing chaos emeralds.  Sonic decides to give it more power and so he travels the world to collect emeralds.  The problem is that Sonic seems to fight with more characters than get along with them, and he always solves his conflicts through violence (even beating up on evil bat girls that insist on crushing on him!).  There are actually eight stories in this game which can be encountered through choosing one of eight Sonic characters as your sprite.  Each character has the loyalty of Emerl, the Gizoid.  The only problem with this is that the stories are very similar and can't be skipped, meaning you have to watch all the cut scenes all over again if you wish to see each plot.

In addition to the story plot, you can also play the game in a multi-player mode, battling other players in a manner reminiscent to Super Smash brothers. In this mode, there are ten characte... Read the rest of this Review

Herding for some fun? Try a game that's all bark and ....only a few bites!
OVERALL RATING: 9/10

I've finally stumbled across a game for the GBA which makes me smile from ear to ear!  A simply strategy game with adorable graphics and consistent attention- getters, "Sheep" is a game I'd recommend to anyone looking for a good time in the gaming world!  Not only do you play the part of an adorable sheepdog of your choice, but you can also choose what type of sheep you want to herd, how difficult you want the game to be, and what kind of a game you are playing.

Your job during the game is fairly straightforward: herd sheep into a van so they can be moved to the next stage, or 'farm'.  This sounds like a pretty simple task until you consider electrical fences, giant rambling tractors, or sharp chomping machines looking for a fresh bit of lamb chop!  Each obstacle course is unique, and most introduce new traps or concerns for the player, so progressing through this game always brings fresh enjoyment.

GRAPHICS: 10/10
This game has some of the most adorable graphics I've come across for the Gameboy Advance.  The menus are slick; the backdrops are colorful, various, and interesting; the sprites are clear; and the characters themselves cause a desire for snuggling something soft.

This game also has several cut scenes, which is the last thing I'd expect from a game like Sheep.  To add to all the wonderful aspects of this game, the cut scenes are humorous!  The cut scenes usually consist of a conversation held between two sheep, and during the conversation the sheep are usually the knowledgeable characters.  They might be curious about their next location, but no matter which way the van is travelling, they plot and scheme about ways to pull the wool over the sheepdog's eyes.  What they think and have to say is certainly deserving of an elicited giggle, but the game's plot isn't the only impressive aspect.

The artists and developers of this game made sur... Read the rest of this Review

Maybe another player adds to the value?
OVERALL RATING: 2/10

As a home brew, this game is a little harder to rate than others.  It lacks many of the features a developed game might have, and it's exclusively designed for two players. Thus, don't bother with this game unless you've found a partner in Netplay.

In this game, you control a blue or red sprite which can be moved in the four cardinal directions.  The goal is to get the 'ball' into the goal opposing your own while dodging the efforts of your partner.  Since I had no partner, the game had absolutely no value to me as a lone player.  Thus, I -tried- my best to give it some leeway and considered how I think the game would play if I had someone to play it with.

GRAPHICS: 2/10
I was probably a little more generous here than I should have been.  The game isn't terribly unsightly as it is completely boring.  There's a green field, a few white rectangles forming a border, on generic white square which represents the ball, and two equally as generic sprites.

The sprites cannot travel diagonally, and simply flip over if you move left.  They have no moving parts, and lack detail.  In fact, there's no detail in the entire game at all. However, I believe someone created this game as learner; in other words, they simply were trying to create 'a game' without being bogged down with graphics and details.

The one area in which I really can't afford any leeway is in level variety.  Once a player scores five points, a new field loads that has a few obstacles for players to work around.  However, there are only three such fields (including the empty field), and the obstacles are simple.

SOUND: 1/10
Guess what?  There is not a single sound in this game.  I guess it's better than having annoying sounds, however....

ADDICTIVENESS: 2/10

Chameleon

Pallets of Fun
OVERALL RATING: 6.7/10

One of the best visually designed arcade games I've come across, Chameleon has all the ingredients that make a game worth spending a few hours on.  Unique platforming abilities give this game a flare which makes a player not regret those few hours either, if they're into earning high scores.

As a chameleon, you scamper along platforms and poles, gobbling up chicken eggs and killing chickens with a flick of the tongue... all while dodging haphazardly thrown baseballs departing from a purple vulture's wing.  There doesn't seem to be a story, but the quirky characters and vibrant graphics make up for this oversight.

GRAPHICS: 9/10
Chameleon is one of the first arcade games I've played that totally threw me for a loop when it comes to graphics and colors.  The sprites are absolutely adorable and, more importantly, recognizable.  The colors really jump from the screen and give you plenty to look at while not being distracting enough to take away from game play.

One level has a jungle set theme while the other has an urban city theme involving steel beams instead of bamboo stalks. The jungle theme has the better palette in my opinion, but the city theme has its attractions also.  The biggest downside to the game however (and consequently the reason it did not earn a perfect score from me), is that there are only two types of level design.  Once you play a round of the jungle theme followed by a round of the city theme, the two stages repeat themselves with little to no variation.

That being said, the levels themselves pay rather impressive attention to detail.  From red rope lashings holding together bamboo stalks to tufts on the sides of nests, the jungle levels tend to draw your eyes to corners of the game you'd never expect to appreciate.  The city - like stage contains beams with angular supports and springy platforms that suspend below various platforms.Read the rest of this Review
Bug Blitz

A Virus of a Game
OVERALL RATING: 1/10

This is probably the first game in which I must advise all players not even to waste their time opening it up and allowing it to load.  In fact, the only reason I rated it a 1 as opposed to a 0 is simply because... it's something to do.  However, I'd rather do nothing, than to play this game.

GRAPHICS (1/10):
Shabby.  This word pretty much sums it all up.  You play a little jet which is very unimaginatively designed.  Pushing the little gray blob across the screen, your job is to fly around and shoot..... other little blobs.  The map is a messy maze with a blue background and pink walls.  If you ignore the horribly clashing colors, you still won't likely get past the small black, yellow, and purple dots that cling to the walls.  Though the instructions tell you how many 'bugs' to kill, it's quite unclear what actually constitutes as a 'bug'.  In this case, what is a virus supposed to look like anyways?  There are no humorous amoeba shapes... no fiendish faces to add comedy... Absolutely nothing struck me as something which was dangerous and needed to be destroyed.

In addition to all of this, your bullet consists of a plain white dash and can never be upgraded.  When you shoot something, it explodes by flashing a small circle of dots and then disappearing.  The ship never appears diagonal. If you turn into perpendicular cardinal directions, your ship simply flashes into the other direction instead of turning into it.

I'm not impressed in the slightest and could hardly bare to look at the screen.

SOUND (1/10):
The sound was just as abhorrent as the graphics.  The music sounds like a bunch of scratches being made with fingernails on a vinyl surface, only that would be more impressive. There's no beat.  It's not catchy, and it sounds like a bunch of random, computer generated noises.  It was torture to listen to.

Bonk\'s Adventure

You had me at Dinosaur!
OVERALL RATING: 8/10

Everyone loves a good Mario- like game in which you travel, talk to dinosaurs, and save a princess, right?  Well in Bonk's Adventure, what you would expect of such a game is what you get!  Though I was at first unimpressed, it didn't take me long to fall in love with the little Charlie Brown caveman who literally uses his head.  Head butting enemies into obliteration, this little guy has got some major guts!

For those of you that don't know, the whole 'Bonk' idea originated in Japan as a comic with a completely different name.  The character was loved so much that people started wanting Bonk to be given his own game, and so Hudson Soft took up the challenge and the Bonk's series was born.  The first game was designed for the Turbo Grafx -16 and Bonk quickly became a sort of mascot for the system.  Since most people in the United States didn't own or even recognize a TG - 16, Bonk wasn't well known until he was introduced to other systems such as the Gameboy.

Just an interesting tidbit: in Japan's original version, power- ups changed Bonk into a cavewoman!  The gender transformation was not accepted in the United states however, so Bonk's power ups were edited to be more suitable for American children.

GRAPHICS (9/10):
For a game that lacks any color outside the black and white scale, I found the graphics to be quite astonishing!  Not only was every line crisp and clear, but nearly all the characters were downright adorable.  Bonk himself isn't the most handsome guy in the world; he's got an over- zealous cranium, he's bald, and he has teeth that allow him to scale cliffs and trees.  When he eats a piece of meat bared from a flower, he becomes so excited that he grows a little Mohawk and his pupils become insanely dilated. However, he's got a small bit of charm with his Charlie Brown eyes and cute little detail- less body.

Hopping Mappy

Hopping Mad? More like Hopping Happy!
OVERALL RATING: 7/10

Who's not a fan of the underdog?  Or in this case, the under-mouse?  In "Hopping Mappy", you play a policeman mouse named Mappy.  Hopping around on a pogo stick, it's your job to avoid hungry cats while gathering loot the cats have stolen.  Items exist in pairs, so you can get a bonus for collecting pairs together.  The cats follow pre- determined paths, so the task in the game is strategizing how to maximize your points while choosing a convenient trail.

((For the Japanese and game history lovers:  There are two types of cat: a large red one named Nyamco or Goro... and smaller ones called Mewskies.  The reason the larger cat has two names is due to the fact that this game was released in both Japan and the United States.  "Nyanko" means 'kitty cat' in Japanese, so Namco decided to use a play on words and name the cat Nyamco.  When the game moved to the United States, the large red cat was re- named.  For some strange reason however, the United States chose to keep Mappy's name despite the fact that it comes from the Japanese word for policeman, "mappo", a slightly derogatory term.))

GRAPHICS (4/10):
I've got to admit that this game doesn't have the best of graphics. That being said, the designers do at least deserve a few kudos for not giving the game an excessively dark palette.  However, the colors which ARE given aren't all that attractive either. The game starts off with a bright green yard complete with a white fence and blue sky.  There are some trees drawn in the background which are detail- less enough that I could have drawn them, and patches of garden have various shades and textures which causes the ground to resemble a checkerboard.  All in all it's not so ugly that it hurts my eyes, but it's dull and uninteresting.

The caricatures aren't so bad however, and each sprite clearly represents what it is intended to: th... Read the rest of this Review

Around and Around We Go
OVERALL: 3/10

Who likes roller coasters?
Monkeys?
Significant Others?

Sky buckets, monkey droppings, or aliens?

So the last three are a bit iffy, but that's the way I felt about this game!  Depending on your source, this game has one of two story lines.  One originated in Japan and one originated in the US.  Therefore, you're either a cloaked man trying to save his girlfriend while dodging angry monkeys, robbers, and girls on roller skates.... or you're a robber dodging cops, gathering loot, and avoiding the local zoo.  Whichever is the case, this is NOT a game I would recommend to most people. While I've got to give it kudos for adding en enemy conveyor belt they'd like to call a roller coaster... there's not much else I find laudable.

GRAPHICS (3/10):
The first screen you come to, the menu screen, is horrible.  It doesn't even inspire me to the play the game and consists of the words "Jump Coaster" in all red and on a plain black screen.  If I walked by an arcade machine and saw that, I'd assume the machine was down for maintenance and I'd move on without reading the words.  It's not attractive, lacks creativity, and causes me to wince.

Next is the playing screen.  It's just as ugly.  Green roller coaster tracks, white ladders, red platforms... all on a black background.  The red and green are even puke- worthy shades, and when the characters appear, things only get worse.  Your character is an awkward purple, the other human - like characters are sky blue... monkeys are red, sky buckets are sky blue, and rollerblading girls (if that's what they are) are an orange- ish yellow. Who in the world -picked- this color scheme!?  As though a horrible color pallet wasn't enough, they programmers of the game decided to make every stage and level on the SAME pallet.  I had enough of the colors after the first few stages and was ready to remove the eye so... Sega Chess
Chess is a classic that's been around since possibly 6th Century AD, so it shouldn't come as a surprise that many countries and cultures make claims at its origin in some form.  The game is probably playable on any platform, but this one just happens to be the Sega Master System.  Released in 1991, it doesn't have the bells and whistles of versions we play today, but its functionality and ease of use cannot be denied.

In order to play this game, you must first know how to play chess. (Surprise, surprise!)  Thus, we should do a little talking about how to set the game up, what the various pieces are, and how the pieces move.

The game of chess is one in which opponents attempt to outwit each other in the maneuvering of 6 unique types of pieces. Each player has control over the following:

 Eight pawns

Pawns are the shortest pieces and the most abundant.  Aside from their height, they can be easily recognized by their round 'heads'.  These occupy the second closest rows to each player. Typically, they move forward (and ONLY forward) one space.  However, if a pawn is moving for the very first time, it can move one or two places at the discretion of its player.  Pawns may not continue forward if another piece is in their way and cannot take pieces ahead of them. In order to take the p... Read the rest of this Guide
