Chameleon Featured Review

Chameleon Review by: Singelli - 6.7/10

Pallets of Fun
OVERALL RATING: 6.7/10

One of the best visually designed arcade games I've come across, Chameleon has all the ingredients that make a game worth spending a few hours on.  Unique platforming abilities give this game a flare which makes a player not regret those few hours either, if they're into earning high scores.

As a chameleon, you scamper along platforms and poles, gobbling up chicken eggs and killing chickens with a flick of the tongue... all while dodging haphazardly thrown baseballs departing from a purple vulture's wing.  There doesn't seem to be a story, but the quirky characters and vibrant graphics make up for this oversight.

GRAPHICS: 9/10
Chameleon is one of the first arcade games I've played that totally threw me for a loop when it comes to graphics and colors.  The sprites are absolutely adorable and, more importantly, recognizable.  The colors really jump from the screen and give you plenty to look at while not being distracting enough to take away from game play.

One level has a jungle set theme while the other has an urban city theme involving steel beams instead of bamboo stalks. The jungle theme has the better palette in my opinion, but the city theme has its attractions also.  The biggest downside to the game however (and consequently the reason it did not earn a perfect score from me), is that there are only two types of level design.  Once you play a round of the jungle theme followed by a round of the city theme, the two stages repeat themselves with little to no variation.

That being said, the levels themselves pay rather impressive attention to detail.  From red rope lashings holding together bamboo stalks to tufts on the sides of nests, the jungle levels tend to draw your eyes to corners of the game you'd never expect to appreciate.  The city - like stage contains beams with angular supports and springy platforms that suspend below various platforms.

I guess one more disappointment concerning the graphics is in the nature of the game's title and game play.  Why did the writers of the game decide to use a chameleon as its protagonist and not involve what makes a chameleon infamous in children's eyes?  Don't get me wrong.... I think the little fella is just adorable, but it's an interesting point to bring up.  When I saw the title of the game, I half expected to be using color change to my advantage as I dodged enemies and traversed the levels.

(On a side note, I think it's altogether humorous that the bombs are labeled, and that destroying a chicken using one results in a plucked and ready- to - bake version of the poultry.  Aside from the chameleon itself, this was probably one of my favorite little things in the game.)

SOUND: 8/10
Despite the fact that no sounds in this game are out of place, I have to give the developers kudos for choosing music and sound effects which didn't cause severe irritation.  Every beat and 'boom' is exactly what you'd expect in an arcade game.  There aren't too many noises to 'crowd' the ears, and yet there are enough to offer a fair diversity.

There's the basic tune which plays through both levels, the classical arcade 'dying' tune, explosion noises for the bombs, and strange little sounds that signify the vulture's baseball projectile.  Very occasionally, one of the raving chickens will lay an explosive egg which rolls across the screen and that also has its own little noise.  Finally, the use of the chameleon's tongue lends to a very cute 'scaling' noise as the guy climbs up with the agility of a monkey.

Though the music doesn't vary, it's fine in its own accord and doesn't really warrant a use of a mute option.

ADDICTIVENESS: 6/10
Like most arcades game, this one aims at building a high score.  As far as I could tell, you can play the game indefinitely until you lose all of your lives, and there are no ways to gain more.  Due to this feature, you can always work on earning a higher score or beating a previous record.  Therefore, there's some replay value if you enjoy this sort of thing.

I personally could have kept playing the game for quite some time if it weren't for the fact that there are only two visually distinct levels.  The fact that those two platform maps repeat is the largest drain of the game.  If the game play perhaps became more difficult, this could have been overlooked.  However, the stages are identical in appearance and challenge.  Therefore, there's not much drive to keep aiming for a higher score.  Once you get bored of the maneuvering the little green protagonist, using his impressive ability to kill a chicken with his tongue, and watching him gobble eggs..... well once you hit that point, playing the game is a moot point.

STORY: 1/10
There's absolutely no story to this game.  Why is the chameleon having to defend himself against attacking chickens?  Why is he devouring chicken eggs if most chameleons feast on bugs?  And why.... oh why is there a purple vulture throwing baseball bats at them all?

It's a little disappointing that nothing ties this all together, as I would have appreciated a little zany story to bring some coherence to the game.

DEPTH: 3/10
The game never progresses in any way whatsoever.  The goal remains constant, the enemies never increase in determination or number, and there are always the same number of eggs to complete.  The only reason I rated the game a 3 in this area as opposed to a 1 is for the sheer fact that you can play the game for as long as you wish.  With two stages being consistently repeated, you could play all day so long as you didn't lose both your lives.

DIFFICULTY; 3/10
This game was rather simple.  The controls are easy to use and the character you control handles with just as much ease.  Turning on a dime and moving quickly, it's not too difficult to complete levels and avoid nuances.  However, something the game lacks is a graphic to display how many lives you have left.  While it's not hard to keep track of two lives, this would have been a nice feature to have.  Also, there is absolutely no way to gain additional lives, unlike most platforming games.

While gobbling an egg, you experience a few moments of vulnerability without the use of your tongue, but this in my opinion is a good addition to the game, keeping it from being -too- easy.  It's not of much benefit to the rigor of the game however, as I found virtually no challenge through the game.  I think most players would quit through boredom caused by redundancy, than quit because they've beaten a high score.

Overall, I would recommend this game, despite the flaws.  It's simply too cute to pass up for at least a few rounds of amusement.  There's a lot to be said for the visual appearance of a game, and that's where Chameleon wins out.  There aren't many arcade games that could match it in terms of graphics.   (It's also tons of fun to scale platform levels with a tongue!)
