 Pokemon Stadium is a game released on February 29, 2000 in North America for the Nintendo 64. This game was the first one which we got to see our favorite Pokemon (of the original 151) in full 3D rather than just on a Game Boy screen. There is actually no storyline to the game; instead, there are several different modes to play to experience the entire Pokemon Stadium.
One of the gameplay modes is simply Stadium mode. In Stadium mode, players choose a total of six Pokemon to use in battle, and may select three for each individual battle. Every Pokemon is available, and their moves are adjusted to which level they are at the time. There are four different “cups” which the player may compete for, each of which having a different level of Pokemon allowed to compete: Pika Cup (level 15-20), Petit Cup (level 25-30 and Pokemon must be under a certain height and weight), Poke Cup (level 50-55), and Prime Cup (may use any level of Pokemon, but all opponents’ Pokemon are all level 100). The Poke and Prime Cups each have four rounds, one for each style of Pokeball available in the game (Pokeball, Great Ball, Ultra Ball, Master Ball). There is also a “Battle Now” mode, in which the player is given six random Pokemon and faces a random opponent. This is a fun mode to play when you don’t know which Pokemon to choose as it gives you a different combination of six Pokemon every time.
A similar gameplay mode is the Gym Leader Castle. This mode is exactly what it sounds like: you battle all of the Kanto gym leaders, followed by the Elite Four, and finally your rival. You are not able to directly battle the gym leaders; each gym leader has a series of apprentices that you must defeat before you are able to challenge them. Just like in Stadium mode, you select six Pokemon to take into battle with you, and you then choose three to use before each individual battle begins. Once the player wins all eight badges, defeats the Elite Four, and then his or her rival, a “prize” Pokemon is given that can be transferred over to the player’s Game Boy Pokemon cartridge. These are (mostly) Pokemon that are only obtainable through choice once throughout the game, so being able to win them from Pokemon Stadium was a really nice touch to help complete the Pokedex. The Pokemon possible to win after defeating your rival are: Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle, Hitmonlee, Hitmonchan, Eevee, Omanyte, and Kabuto.
Once Stadium Mode and the Gym Leader Castle have been completed, Mewtwo will appear in the sky on the gameplay menu, and the player can attempt to defeat Mewtwo. The player can choose six of his or her own Pokemon, or rental Pokemon from the Prime Cup selections (from Stadium mode) and attempt to defeat a level 100 Mewtwo. Mewtwo’s moves are Psychic, Thunderbolt, Blizzard, and Rest, so he is fairly difficult to defeat: he has three powerful moves of different styles to deal with different types of Pokemon and has Rest, which he can use to heal himself.
Another gameplay mode (the most innovative of the time in my opinion) was the Game Boy Tower. The game came with an “N64 Transfer Pak” which allowed players to put their Pokemon Red, Blue, or Yellow cartridges in and actually play them through their copy of Pokemon Stadium and be able to play it on a television screen. The “Transfer Pak” also allowed the player to use their Pokemon from their Game Boy games in the normal battle modes of Pokemon Stadium, such as Stadium mode. It also allowed the Pokemon won by beating your rival in the Gym Leader Castle to be transferred to your Pokemon Game Boy game.
Probably one of my favorite modes in Pokemon Stadium when it came out was the Kids’ Club, which was essentially a collection of mini-games. I found these games very addictive when the game came out, and I probably spent almost as much time playing mini-games as playing the games themselves. These mini-games ranged from playing a ring-toss game by throwing coiled up Ekans’ at Diglett, to running as a Rattata on a treadmill, to trying to eat more food than anyone else as a Lickitung. In the Kids’ Club the player can simply choose which mini-game to play each time (either alone against computer players or up to 4 players playing at the same time) or play “Who’s the Champion?” mode where the first person to accumulate a certain number of wins would be crowned the champion.
Overall, this game is a very enjoyable experience and was one of my favorite games for the Nintendo 64. It was amazing to see all of my Pokemon that I spent hours training on my Game Boy Color come to life on my television in Pokemon Stadium. The ability to unlock “prize” Pokemon (such as the original three Pokemon selections) was a nice touch that really helped to unlock more of my Pokedex in the game, and being able to play my Game Boy Color copy of Pokemon on my television via my Nintendo 64 was also a very enjoyable experience as well. The mini-games also provide hours of entertainment, even though most of them do just require button mashing. I recommend that everyone at least try this game, regardless of whether you are a Pokemon fan or not (because I know all of the Pokemon fans will love it!).
Graphics: 9/10
The graphics in this game for the time were amazing. It was the first time any of us had seen our Pokemon in full 3d models with detailed attack animations to really get a feel for the battle that was occurring. My only problem with the graphics is that some of the attack animations were used a little too often in my opinion; sometimes the animation didn’t match the attack being used.
Gameplay: 9.5/10
I like that the battles in this game are only 3-on-3. It makes the battles enjoyable, but not so long that the battles take forever to finish. There are enough gameplay modes that keep players entertained for hours, whether it is defeating the gym leaders and Elite Four to try to win a prize Pokemon to transfer to your Game Boy cartridge, or whether you are playing your actual Game Boy game on your television via Game Boy tower.
Sound: 8/10
The announcer called the battles well; you really felt like you were in a Stadium watching these creatures do battle with each other.
Replayability: 9.5/10
This game has a super high level of replayability. Once you defeat Mewtwo after beating the Gym Leader Castle and Stadium Mode, the game can be played in a harder difficulty. Also, with a seemingly endless combination of Pokemon to use, it is always fun to see how many different combinations of Pokemon work well together to win the battles. The mini-games also provide hours of entertainment, whether playing against friends or computer opponents.
Overall: 9/10

You must win or tie 5 rounds in a row during a ''Who's The Best?'' mini-game championship against 3 CPU's on hard difficulty to unlock hyper difficulty mode.
Surfing Pikachu
Put the Pikachu you started with in Yellow in your party for Round 2 Prime Cup Master Ball. You MUST USE THAT PIKACHU IN EVERY BATTLE of Round 2 Prime Cup Master Ball. After you defeat the final trainer, your Pokemon will be put in the Hall of Fame and Pikachu will learn Surf! You can now play the Surfing Pikachu Minigame in Yellow version as well.
Unlock R2
If you beat all the cups and Gym Leader Castle, Mewtwo will appear. If you beat him, you'll get the harder R2.
Use Mew I round2
First Beat Round1 and then when you Unlock R2 you can use Mew as a rental in R2 Prime Cup Battles.
2nd Title Screen
Beat R1 Mode, and reload the game. In place of the title screen is a new one.
Change your Pokemon's color!
If you nickname your Pokemon in the Gameboy game and bring it into Stadium, it will have changed color depending on what you nicknamed it!
This has NOTHING to do with shiny Pokemon, because they were not invented when Stadium was released.
Possibilities range from an orange Pikachu to a seagreen Tentacruel.
Bonus Stickers
After beating the R2 Mewtwo, go to the Gallery. Scroll down
to ''Print'' and hold L and R. Print will become ''Bonus''.
Press A to view the game backgrounds, which can be printed
off at a Pokemon Snap station.
Dodou speed mode
If you beat Master Ball in PokéCup or Primecup
you will get dodou speed. This allows you to play your pokemon game in pokemon tower at X2 speed.
