Prepare for a ride! I am here to tell the story I have been meaning to tell for so long, but I've been so lazy and caught up with other things in life (Like the story right now) to make a thread about this. I know it'll be long, and every day it seems to get longer. I also want to make it because Im sure some people havnt heard about this, nor have I explained it to everyone I know because it would take 5ever. Ready to read? I hope so! Grab a bag of popcorn and take a seat! This is a story all about how my life got flipped, turned upside down. So this all started on December 28th (This may be the only date I get wrong, because its been so long). My mother was taken into the OR room at around 10 AM for a reversal from her sleeve to a Gastric bypass. Which both are basically for weight loss. But since having issues with the last surgery, she went into have it redone to where she would have little to no stomach (Since they had to cut out whenever the hole was that was leaking from the previous one) The surgery went fine. She came out and onto the 6th floor. It was the day after or so... uh... I believe that she started running a pulse of 130 for unknown reasons (While her normal resting rate is at maximum 80). You can see that this is a problem. She was taken in for a CAT scan on the 31st , which my father did not know about at the time and should have considered my mother was completely out of it to make any logical desicsions (Long story short, she was in the hospital bed asking where the dog was). She orally took the contrast for the CAT scan and was later brought down between 1 to 4 AM in the morning. 3 doctors looked at it, and 2 of the 3 agreed they saw something on the scan that could be causing this. She was then put into surgery, again, without my fathers consent, on the 1st. When they talked about the CAT scan to my father, he had thought it was another scan that was taken on the 28th or 29th, which was why he never questioned it. He was called about this surgery while he was at Sheetz down the road and before he could make it back, she was already sent to surgery. After surgery, He was called on the phone about how the surgery went. They made a 6-7 inch incision, since they couldn't be done microscopically, and they found.... NOTHING! Absolutely nothing. That's right folks, a useless surgery. They explained to him how they needed to put her into ICU for a little bit while they figured it out, but other than that, it went okay and that they would come out to get him when she was moved or they were ready or... something. Please don't blame me, I wasn't actually there since I was in Florida at the time. Any who. At one point, a nurse or doctor came out to get him to see her or to explain more of what happened. Again, my mind is foggy on this. I just know the general outcome of this. He was then explained to that she aspirated. For those who dont know the definition, Fun fact time! When you aspirate, you have something go down your lungs. Like food, liquid or other things going down your airway. So they guess what happend was she vomitted into her lungs before/during surgery. Then he said they were just getting her in and settled, and they would come out to get him when they were done. He sat there for about 40 minutes, before thinking to himself that he was kind of fed up with it and tired of waiting, so he into the ICU, turned the cornor and found about 8 doctors standing behind a curtain and around my mother. At that moment, she had died. She was on the edge and being brought back to life. Her body went into shock, making only the things she absolutely needed for survival to work (I dont know how to explain this, my fathers best friend explained this better. And it made her kidney function drop to half). She was then put on life support/a ventalator to breathe for her. Since without this, her oxygen would probably had dropped below 50%. When we all know, we want to be as close to 100% as possible. We found out later on that what happened in surgery was - She aspirated and they continue on with the surgery. So what ended up happening was they put her into a coma state of She was slowly, slowly getting better and she was being taken off the life support little by little until she started puffing up. Apparently, air was coming from somewhere, they didn't know where (Seriously, they didnt know where? Its pretty obvious) and it was leaking out into her tissue, and since it couldn't escape, she puffed up, making her look about 200 pounds heavier than she actually was. On the 5th, When I got back from Florida, was the next big event. She would suddenly have issues getting oxygen for a short period of time, and then come back to normal. This happened 3 times. They ended up taking an X-ray or Scope or something to check it out, comes to find out, her lungs are collapsed. Fun, right? So they put in 2 chest tubes. One on each side to relieve the pressure that was building up in her tissue and around her lungs, making it harder for her to breathe. This did end up helping a lot and it was found out later, she had holes in her lungs that were not helping the case. Two became three, three became four, and four became five. Three in one lung and two in the other, trying to get rid of excess air and what was making the lung collapse at the time. During this, she began getting a skin infection in where the tubes were located on her chest. Since I am starting to get tired of writeing, ill give you the low down on basically everything that happened Between then and now, she has gotten probably 4 different infections, including a skin infection that happened when taking the chest tubes out. She woke up twice, the first time they had to put her back into a coma and the second time they kept her awake. She also has had a blood clot in her left lung and her right lung collapsed once more. They called the 2nd collapse "Anxiety". A therapist prescribed her medication for depression while she couldnt talk or barely move, making her have serotonin syndrome. She was put in the Special Care unit for 5 hours and came back to the ICU because of it and her high heart rate. At the beginning of all of this, they would call my father whenever something happened, but now they wont even call him when they move her. She is now showing some signs of short term memory loss. And.... I think that's it. There is probably more that I'm forgetting. If you have any questions, just post here and ill explain anything. In the end of the day, my father is very frustrated. and is thinking of getting a lawyer since a lot of things should not have happened that have. That and they have been treating her badly as well as this is her third gastric bypass surgery that has had major effects on her life. So yeah. All of those surgeons/doctors better be fired eventually. This is absolutely ridiculous and it pisses me off to no end knowing that they can get away with crap like this. Sorry to hear what has happened, hopefully things get better soon. |

It really sucks to hear that that had happen, and to have things go from bad to worse for her. I hope things start going uphill soon, and while I am no to sure of the legalities of suing the surgeons, if all the previous failures before this were with the same hospital, then perhaps a closer look at to why all this has happened would be a good idea. Once again, I'm sorry to hear you suffer through this as you're separated from your mum, but I hope she gets better. Sue. Sue the pants off of them, then sue for their shirts, and especially their jobs. These people are quacks. She's gone through so much...that's just awful. I'm so sorry. I'll be praying for you and your dad to have strength, her to recover fully and soon, and that these doctors get no chance to do something like this to anyone else.
I'm really sorry to hear this. Hang in there. I'm really sorry to hear this. Hang in there. |

Oh my goodness...I am so sorry. That is absolutely horrible. These doctors all need to be freaking...I don't know. Have their lungs accidentally collapsed. My family has been no stranger to this sort of thing, unfortunately. I am so sorry you all have to go through this. I will definitely keep your family in my prayers. |

Fyredove : whenever I hear about any botched surgeries like the ones your mom went through it always makes me wonder how some of these so called doctors became doctors in the first place when it,s quit clear that they don,t seem to know what they are doing in fact if I had my way they would be fired and |

Oh wow. I didnt expect so many responses xD Thank you all so much for all the thoughts. There was something actually important I did forget, and I feel like an idiot for forgetting. My father had to make a large decision of having a Trach put in (tracheotomy) to help her breathe. Another reason was because they couldnt have the ventilator on for much longer without possibly damaging her vocal cords. But you see, my father didnt want to do this for a simple reason. My mother had a fear before even starting these surgeries that she would become my grandfather and we would have to take care of her. My grandfather had a trach for 25 years of his life. And he knew my mother wouldnt be happy about it. But since everything was the way it was, he decided that it was best to do that. As well as he actually liked the doctor/surgeon that would be doing it, he was one of her ICU doctors for a week. The reason why was that he had been a military surgeon, which made him more comfortable with doing it. A new Ill attempt to respond to everyone in some way or another Zircron Swift : Yeah, I dont think my father is as much either. But at this point, there is something going on that we dont know about and its been kind of evident. Adding to that, someone made a good point to my father. Since the hospital is very well known, especially in the state of PA, a lawyer wont go against them. But after 3 failed surgeries and another one done for no reason that ended her up here. Ill also add another piece of info - A student preformed her chest tubes while the surgeon was watching, which is the one she got a skin infection on. Boured : You have no idea how many times I've said that xD skrt-lord : Well, one good thing about all of this, is she's complete covered. We don't get a bill because of her insurance. OmegaVenomous : Yeah, I'm sure everything will end up fine. But within the month of January, it was pretty on edge. As well as the fact she was knocking on deaths door. Abdullahboys : Heh, Im the patient one. My father on the other hand. Im sure it will. And no kidding xD Eirinn : What about the socks? I want their socks too. That is my fathers thought process. That he doesnt want this to happen to someone else like its happened to her. He's been alright... my father. However, I think the stress has gotten to him. He had to go to the ER twice for his heart. He is finally taking medication for it as well as a patch for smoking. But thank you so much A user of this : Finally I can tell you the whole story xD Im so sorry it was so long. And yeah, I've heard that you had been through simmilar, and im sorry for that as well. Thank you so much user <3 no 8120 : Yeah it does. And when its 3 times in a row with complications, it REALLY does make you question. My father heard of a quote from her primary doctor/family doctor. "Doesnt matter if you're first of the class or last, everyone gets a diploma". I mean, I can get that some surgeries dont go right. If they could do it all perfect, they would. But after all she's been through, its just too much of a trip after a pointless surgery. I think thats everyone! Ill post here if I have any My father had to make a large decision of having a Trach put in (tracheotomy) to help her breathe.
