Today (yesterday?) I noticed these weird characters showing nearly everywhere.

I did a thorough scan of the computer (McAfee) and nothing seems to be wrong. However, I remember a newspaper article from a few weeks ago talking about an advanced form of infection where the URL starts with "data:text" or something like that. It was supposedly limited to emails, but I've seen it on various websites.

Am I infected? Should I be worried?

janus : That's just weird....I don't think I have come across this type of problem before. Sorry that you have. At this point I'm not too sure what it is myself since it has left me quite curious....maybe run it by someone whos an expert on computers maybe? Or better yet...

After my computer completely froze (I had to force shut down) the strange characters are gone. I don't seem to have problems anymore, but the force shut down worries me; it's been only 6 months since I acquired that laptop.

I guess the best things to do is to make sure your antivirus (McAfee) is up to date (so check for updates for McAfee). And also check for and install Windows Updates as well. If McAfee wasn't the latest version and you updated it, run another full scan.

You can also try downloading and installing malwarebytes (free edition) and do a scan there as well. It's possible that a recent update for your antivirus and Windows Update might have released some security fix recently for whatever recent malware came up on the news article you read, but that is just a possible guess.

After you do these steps, I'm pretty sure you should be fine. And just remember to keep everything (all programs) up to date.

Mohammedroxx3 : is the up-to-dateness essential for every single program? I hardly use Skype, and there are often updates needed. But I will try looking for Windows updates.

My computer did a forced shut down a few days ago to install updates. If you have Windows 10, that is a likely reason why the computer shut down. I still don't know what's up with those symbols, though.

I guess what's most important is to install Windows updates, keep your antivirus up to date, and whatever programs you use most often up to date.

Though you are technically more secure having all programs up to date but I don't think it is that necessary.

Honestly if nothing else stated in this thread works, and for some reason you REALLY don't want to see a specialist, you should system restore your computer to a date prior to the problem's initiation.

Yeah your computer isn't doing so hot. I do have a tool that could potentially help you, but due to me being at school at this moment, and the tool being on Reddit which is a site that my school blocked I will send it through PM as soon as I can. If this tool doesn't work, then you may need to do a system restore.
