Tom finally found the source code for the RGR Plugin 2.40 (couldn't find it for 2.41 but the only thing added to that was XP support) and he's interested in doing a little work for it. I don't have a very big budget at all, only $100 but he said that if the time he invests into it goes beyond what I can afford that I can pay him by letting him have some ad space.

What I plan to have him do is update the version of Mednafen we're using. The last time we had Mednafen updated to the latest version within the RGR Plugin was back in February of 2015 which means that almost every update made to it from this page will apply. It consists of a lot of bug fixes and performance enhancements but the big addition is Sega Saturn support. Even though it doesn't currently support Saturn netplay, from what I've seen, the Saturn emulation is really good and far better than MESS (which is what we currently use for Saturn emulation).

Something that I can have him do is include additional files with the RGR Plugin and adjust various settings for the many included emulators. If anyone has any suggestions for small additions that could improve something with the RGR Plugin, be sure to let me know.

Good to know. I haven't been physically able to use the plugin for the longest, but hopefully some of the updates that have gone through would be able to help and I can get back into gaming.

Probably a minor but potentially useful suggestion for some users and some games... 

Is it possible to enable mouse movement as a controller for some games (particulary arcade/mame games) through an option?

I was able to figure out how to use the mouse as a controller on the RGR plugin and helped someone with that, but I had to make my own .ini file for it and put it in a certain location on the hard drive. I'm thinking this might not be too hard to implement since I made instructions in that thread along with the needed file. (but the file needs to be renamed depending on the game)

Hopefully I'll be able to play some Saturn games because my computer is kind of crappy. Thanks to both you and Tom for working on this.

That's amazing! I hope the new update is great especially with updating Mednafen, I'm not much for Sega Saturn but I'm sure it will be amazing none the less.

Maybe the PSX would start to work for me again....better yet the Saturn games as well!I haven't been able to touch that one because it stopped working for me a long time ago. So it would be nice to play them again. ^0^

Nice to see Mednafen updated, it's one of the most versatile emulators out there.

This probably won't make it before the netplay tournament starts, but according to my tests, I doubt any update to Mednafen would allow me to join it. Still, many people could benefit from it, and that's what matters most.

I'll have to give Saturn a try with Mednafen, since MESS made it impossible for me to play it. I know of at least one game I wanted to try, so if it works then I could search for more.

I almost forgot... Is it possible to add more advanced configuration options in the "play your games" feature? Like maybe use more than one media devices in MESS? For example, add a hard drive media device as well as a floppy drive media device for DOS? Or maybe 2 floppy drives? Me and Vanelan need this to have a better chance of successfully getting DOS games added to vizzed.

I did manage to get some kind of DOS system to work on the RGR plugin, but it's processor is relatively too weak and I'm limited on what I can do because I can only add one media device. Vanelan also got a couple of stronger DOS systems to work with MESS, but it freezes on the RGR plugin. Is that possible to fix as well? Thanks.

If you don't mind me asking, how much exactly would be be looking for to add... say... DOSBox or CCS64?
As far as configuration goes, I think we could configure them fairly easily.

It's good to hear that Tom can update the RGR again. The only thing I'd suggest is an update to the N64 emulators so that Rare games like Conker's Bad Fur Day can actually be playable. Is it possible to add Mednafen to the list of N64 emulators for the RGR?

A stupid idea that I have is to add game.com to the RGR, just so people can see how awful Sonic Jam is on that system.

It is great to see the plugin getting more updates.

As Van already said, I'd like to see DOSBox added to the plugin.

I´d like to see the emulation of Windows 3 games in the RGR. There are a few old classics that I´d really love to try out.

I'm not sure how much work would be involved, but one of the biggest updates that has been needed for awhile now is something to be done with the N64 emulator(s) They either need to be updated or have project 64 added.

Mohammedroxx3 : That might be able to be done through MESS commands. Something you could look into.

Those things are probably things I could add myself at some point.


Vanelan : He usually charges between $500-$1000 per an emulator. Really depends on how difficult it is and how many options are made available.

Jordanv78 : Project 64 isn't open source (or at least not the latest version) which is why it was never added. Having the current N64 emulators updated is beyond my budget.

Davideo7 : I kinda figured that was going to be the case with regards to cost. I do believe that the investment would be worth is as a lot of what is hindering the RGR to some respect is that the N64 emulators do not work that well for a good portion of the users, and/or the favorite games they want to play are buggy when emulated with the ones available on Vizzed.

Davideo7 : If he can just add it and we can set command line options, much like the play your own rom type page, we can potentially do anything with it with minimal set up from Tom.

I assume you are able to do that with most of the emulators already, so we can make configurations for individual games either on your side or on the user side.

After Tom updated the RGR Plugin with the latest version of Mednafen, he finds out that the Saturn support only works with the 64-bit version of Mednafen and the RGR Plugin uses the 32-bit version. This means that the only things that were added are all the big fixes that Mednanfen has had over the past 1-2 years. Because of this, I don't think I'm going to bother releasing it because a lot of work goes into releasing a plugin (having many users thoroughly test out things, forcing everyone to upgrade, etc) and it's just not worth it for some bug fixes.

Jordanv78 : The investment would be possibly worth it but the problem is, I just don't have the money and probably wont for a very long time.

Vanelan : I wish it were that simple but I know it's going to cost a lot. Every emulator I've had added has cost me between $500 - $1000 each and he sometimes also encounters stumbling blocks which usually ends up costing me another $1000. If you wanted to contact him and discuss it with him though then I can give you his email address. He usually doesn't like to do quotes though, he usually likes to just work on something and then come up with the charge after he's done.

Davideo7 : I dunno how much good it will do for me to talk to him about it since you say that he doesn't like to give quotes anyway.
I just figured that if he added DOSBox, we could take care of the setup side, since it would probably have to be different for every game anyway.

Either way, a MAME update would probably give us a lot more functionality and would get rid of MESS, since MESS has been absorbed by MAME.
