Seems like Gamestop is now going to delve into game publishing, according to this article. Question I have to ask is do you think they are crazy for doing this or do you think it's a brilliant move by them? Personally, I think it's a good move, as the world of gaming seems to be changing and they are trying to change with it. But you might think differently. Anyway, here's the article:

I say, the more the merrier. I'm a fan of having options and having each of the companies compete to bring the consumers better products (in theory). It could be a wash, but I'm willing to give them a chance if they're willing to do it right (i.e. NOT pay to play, invest time and money into the projects)

Thanks for pointing this news out!

I hope it's a good thing I am not a fan of them however. I tend to get better deals on everything elsewhere. Not sure how good it is to give them exclusive rights to them, hope they don't start over pricing.

i can't help but wonder, how are they going to try ripping people off with this? don't they get enough money with that terrible trade-in process where they give people a fraction or less of the game in questions value then turn right around and put it on the shelf for full price?

edit: "“I think this will work because we’ve both been in the games industry for a long time,” said Insomniac Games President and CEO Ted Price. “There’s a lot of trust involved. They trust us to shepherd our creative vision and make the best possible game. That’s not always the case with traditional publisher-developer relationships.”"

o.O who is this "they" you're speaking of with trust in the same sentence?

This will not end well. If a great company like Clover Studios cannot survive (developers of the Viewtiful Joe series),I see little hope for Insomniac Games ending well on this. I mean yes, they have done well on their titles but partnering with a company known for screwing gamers over and offering overpriced merchandise seems like a bad move for them. I do like that Game Stop is about gaming and the employees are fellow gamers, but they have to take their cues from their higher ups.

The French always say, "Give the runner his chance." Let's see what this product is and how enjoyable it is. I'm personally skeptical about a retailer "suddenly" becoming a publisher, but who knows?

I think this is a great idea, they definitely have the resources to pull it off, whether its the money to do it, or the actual place to sell and promote, they have it all in that department instead of a company that still needs to find a place to sell and market.

I am curious as to how this will turn out. I want to give them the benefit of the doubt. But...I know this means the game itself will be a GameStop Preorder-Only Exclusive.

Oldschool777 : I kind of agree with you there. I like that they are for the gaming audience. But I usually end up spending a few dollars extra buying things from there than I would from other retailers. If that wasn't the case I'd be more supportive.

Oldschool777 :

What gamestop do you go to? They aren't overpriced in my neck of the woods, unless 7 bucks for a 60 dollar game is bad news to people. My worst dislike is that a lot of the time, the bargain bin, you know, FULL of discount 360, and ps3 games and such...may not have their usual twice the amount of games as my local Wal-Mart.

I never said the games were a bad price. I mean the accessories crap like a Triforce pin or a video game inspired energy drink.

Oldschool777 : If there is a supply, there must be a demand somewhere . It's just like the 'impulse" row (that's the actual name) close to the cash counters in grocery stores. Because if people want better-quality collectibles they will usually get them online

I know, that is why they put candy bars and mints in the checkout lanes. But I cannot usually justify money on a video game collectible. But you are right, people want them and others are happy to supply it for a markup.

Game Stop gives you candy? I haven't seen any candy-related items in all of the Game Stops I've ever been to. Lucky you.

Well, they definitely have the resources to do this. The only questions now are "Will people want to publish through Gamestop?" and "How will Gamestop manage their publishing service?" If there's any newcomer to the game publishing sector who can stand out, it's definitely Gamestop.

Considering the majority of their staff revolves around enjoying, playing, and promoting games, I'd expect they would find the right people with the right kind of savvy to be extremely successful.  And they'll get their criticism because they're running a business.  It's not a person doing something because it gives them pleasure, it's a group of people developing something to satisfy share-holders and create income to a corporation.

We'll get some of the run-of-the-mill projects from these folks and they'll make a bunch of money.  I don't want anyone complaining when it happens either.  The company is there to get dollars.  Blame the saps who keep spending money on crap entertainment.

I agree with jlove on this.
I find myself going to GameStop less and less these days, since they aren't very competitive price wise.

I hope they don't over-charge for the exclusives they publish and hopefully they won't only make games exclusive to GameStop stores...
