So, I found out today that I'm getting laid off. Well, today turned out to be my last day.

I've worked at the same place for nearly 4 years now and so I was a bit surprised when this happened. Obviously the job market is bad and the oil patch specifically (which is where I worked) has been hit hard by low oil prices so this wasn't unexpected but I thought I had survived the worst of it and would ride things out until the market got good again.

So, now I get to go back to hunting for a job. This is my absolute least favorite thing to do. Thankfully I've had a very varied job for the last 4 years so I've gained a lot of experience doing a lot of different things and I am not too picky to do most of them going forward. Still, I was happy staying where I was even though things were slow.

Oh well. Life goes on. It does mean I'll have extra time to spend on here so I'll likely be around at more varying times throughout the day instead of just at night now.

Sorry to hear that you were laid off. I've gone through that before and it's never a fun situation. It's good to hear that you have a variety of experience though, it should make it that much easier for you to find a new job that's a good fit.

I know exactly how you feel. I had a big layoff scare in my job 4 years ago and got into a panic since I essentially burned the bridges for my last job and really don't know how to do anything else. ^^;

Are you thinking of going into a similar field or going to try something new?

Oh wow that sucks to the extreme. I remember hearing all of your stories about what happened to your team and what not and then this happens. Sorry that all this happened, but soon enough you will be back on your feet with a shiny new job to hang on your trophy case.

Vanelan : well, I'm an accountant so for me I can be in any industry that I can get into. Accounting is pretty much the same everywhere you go. There are little rules that apply to each industry because of the nature of the industry but once you understand those you are good to go. As for where I'll end up I have no idea. The job market where I live is terrible right now because of the oil prices so I might be off for a while.

I'm sorry to hear about you getting laid off... I hope job hunting won't take too long for you, and I hope you can find a job that you liked as much as the one you had.

Laid off or let go? Did they tell you that there's no point in the future when they may call you back? I've been laid off for a month before but that's about it. Sorry to hear it either way.

Ferdinand : same difference to me. They don't need me anymore so they terminated the working relationship.

Simply put, I didn't get fired which is great.

I feel for you man. I know how stressful such a situation can be. And with the present provincial government (God forbid the same happens on the federal level :o) it does not look like things will improve any time soon. At least it does not seem to stress you out too much (for now); good luck!

It's always important to have experience in multiple fields of jobs, especially in a situation like yours.

Sorry to hear about this, I hope you can find another good-paying job soon. I might be looking for a job next year since I'd like to have a summer job. My mom told me I could work at the same place she does if there's a job open!

I'm sorry to hear that. Though things happen, it is unfortunate that you've lost your job. However, there are a couple bright sides among this poor turn of events.

These include the fact that you still have a good occupation, which is being an Administrator upon the site of Vizzed. Also, a benefit of being separated from your previous job is that you can spend more time upon Vizzed.

However, there will be a certainty of less dough running in. But, since you've gotten so much experience, it will likely be easy to attach to a new profession soon enough.

As someone who never has had a job before I do not know what to say. What i can say is sucks to be you right now. Huh turns out i did know what to say about that after all.

Any development? I guess the oil sector in Alberta will be down for the next four years or so...

janus : not so far. It's only been a week or so. Getting a new job doesn't usually happen that quickly. I'm trying to take it easy and not stress it too much.

And the oil sector will rebound regardless of the government. When the oil price comes back (and it will) the government will only be able to limit the growth. They can't stop it completely.

I'm sorry to hear about your loss of the job (I've been meaning to tell you this, but I didn't get to till today.) I know this is a pretty stressful moment right now...Any possible leads so far? How far are you considering to move around in order to find another job?

play4fun : so far prospects are few and few between. I've been in contact with multiple recruitment agencies but so far I've only had 1 positive response. I should be hearing back Monday or Tuesday about 1 job possibility. Other than that it's pretty sparse. I live in Calgary and with the oil price down there are lots of people out of work.

geeogree : they seem to be doing a fantastic job so far. A few oilsand projects have been cancelled already since the provincial budget came out. Even when oil prices go up, the sector will be hurt badly and for a long time.
