So, in a world where everything seems to be going digital, GameStop is here to say that some things just won't change. When confronted about the rise of the digital sales, Paul Raines, CEO of GameStop, says with confidence that they are not worried. “Disc-based games will be around forever,” he says. He notes that the digital sales that GameStop provides will rake in $1 billion this year. This includes Steam cards, kongregate cards, Game downloads, downloadable content, etc. In 2014, Gamestop made $9.3 billion in revenue, $948 million of which was digital. With these numbers, and can be a little easier to see his confidence. “The market has seen physical music sales down 50% from its peak and physical movie sales down 60% from its peak, but even in a doomsday scenario, disc-based games will be around for a long time. I see a complimentary business where we sell discs plus download like the current console mode. Virtual reality games will also likely follow this model.” He says. So, with all this being said, he is showing that yes, other markets are being affected by the digital alternatives. Gaming is staying strong, and it's shown in numbers. It's worth noting though, Microsoft almost made the Xbox One without a disc drive. It's rare to see people buy hard copies of PC games, too. So, if a major console developer were to opt out of creating a disc drive, would they be spelling doom for GameStop, or would it backfire onto the console developer? So, that's about it for the articles, to check out all the details, I listed all three sources down below. What do you guys think? Are disc-based games going anywhere, do you prefer a disc instead of digital downloads, go ahead and tell me! My personal opinion: He's right, for now. I think disc-based gaming is here to stay - but not forever. With the development of more and more storage space and faster computing, at some point it would be easier, quicker, and more convenient to just download the games. I personally like getting physical copies: it makes it feel like my money is being used on something that can actually held and holds value. It's weird, but that's me. Steam has proven that a good enough system will make disc's forgettable, so I expect to see discs to be a thing of the past in about 7-10 years. I do hope he's right actually, if games went digital only, then I won't really be able to play games that much on normal consoles. Sure, most of my games are on Steam now, but I wouldn't be able to play 3DS, Vita, PS3 games anymore because I have no full access to get the games. I can't even play multiplayer games on any of those consoles. |

zanderlex : I can definitely see your point of view. Part of me really likes the idea of going digital, but the other part really likes getting physical copies. I'm not sure what your specific situation is, but it's nice for many different reasons. I can't really lend a digital copy of a game to a friend, hard drive space gets cluttered quick on most devices, and in some countries would be limited (I know some territories have funky restrictions on down loadable video games). Not to mention the elephant in the room. Internet speeds vary immensely depending on a person's location. I complain about having slow Internet at times, and I have 105 Mbps Download and 15 Mbps Upload. It's crazy, because I've met people who are only offered speeds of up to 3 Mbps download and 0.5 Mbps upload. Worst part is, they actually may pay more than I do! So, Internet availability will strongly dictate how this goes (I overlooked this fact when stating my opinion in the original post). Maybe when the speeds are more equal (everyone has at least 25+ mpbs download and 10+ upload), then I can see going digital being a very viable option. Until then, yeah you're right. It would most likely be better if it stays the way it is (and is most likely why it is what it is today). I'm not sure what your specific situation is, but it's nice for many different reasons. Skilledtree : I just don't have a way to physically download anything. Plus having discks is great for the collectors aspect. Once things go digital there will be no collectibles. |

Digital only would make things insanely cheaper. For example look at the PSTV: it can run PS4 games, and it only costs $50 brand new. Plus it would eliminate console generations, or at least cut down on them, as But the world is far from perfect. You see, I think all of these companies that are looking at the benefits of digital only and no disc drive are overlooking something that's much more of a problem than people realize: there are still MILLIONS of gamers with no home internet connection. I'm one of them. If game systems went digital only, I would literally be forced out of modern gaming entirely, and so would many others. In fact, there are a lot of games I want on my PS4 but I can't have them because they're digital. Maybe in thirty years this won't be the case, but for now internet is still a luxury and is still priced as such in ways. Another issue is Disk space. 500GB or even 1TB is just not enough space to store the average hardcore gamer's library, which means uninstalling and redownloading would be done on a regular basis. For something that's ideally so convenient (digital only), that's awful...well, inconvenient. lol And let's not forget that the file size is far larger on a digital game. For example on my PS Vita I have a game with PS3 quality graphics and audio, as well as other high quality features and a ton of depth, and it takes 4MB of memory because it's physical. On the other hand, I have an eight bit style platformer with chiptunes, and it takes 219MB because it's digital. In fact, one of the smallest demos I found for a Vita game was 5.5MB, and it too was an eight bit game. Oh and that 4MB game was 1.1GB when you bought the digital version. That's roughly 250 times larger. Things like this make me say that digital may be the future, but unless things change drastically (companies offer unlimited cloud storage to everyone AND everyone gets internet) and rapidly, it isn't the near future. If a company puts out a digital only console, they'll tank I think. It just isn't a good idea yet. And besides all of the technical issues, I can't tell you how many times I've seen people on the PlayStation blog say things like "physical copy, or no buy". People still don't like digital enough to do this. Good article by the way. Pardon my passionate replies. lol But the world is far from perfect. Eirinn : I respect and fully expect passionate replies from you haha! Solid points mentioned! You're exactly right. There are millions of gamers out there that either have no internet connection, an unstable internet connection (causing downloads to restart consistently), or gamers having data caps with slow internet - making it essentially impossible to truly get anything going. I totally agree about the hard drive space, and I really wish I had kept an article I found about a month ago. It's about a new disc that hold (don't quote me) 170 Terra-bytes - it's supposedly shaped like a CD/DVD, and I'm kicking myself in the butt for not keeping that article. Point of me mentioning that is, hopefully when the 9th generation of consoles arrive, we see that massive amount of HDD space. That would at least solve one problem, while the beast that is internet connections would still be untamed. I respect and fully expect passionate replies from you haha! Solid points mentioned! Lol! I told you, I'm a little "wordy". Or as my Irish ancestors would say, I have the gift of gab.
About those discs though: I saw that on a gameranx video on YouTube. If you want to see if that will be of any use (like telling you what they're called), try searching for "10 Video Game Disc Facts You Probably Didn't Know" on YouTube. I'm fairly certain it's in that video. It shows them too, and they're really tiny. And if the next generation of systems used that thing, we could see physical games that would take thousands of DVDs being made on a single disc. Now that would be cool. Also unless I'm terribly mistaken, those discs are cheaper to produce, are they not? I wonder if those savings would be passed down to the gamer? And wouldn't it be sweet if the next set of handhelds used them (or the NX)? It would have to temporarily store the data in the system much like CD anti-skip technology, but it would be an interesting thing to see. But yeah, I could see digital only happening, but there are a ton of hurdles right now. I'm not entirely sure if I expect to see it happen or not, but it is possible, and as much as I hate to say it, there are benefits to it. I prefer physical though. I would be so upset if games went all digital because honestly, buying physical copies makes me feel more like I truly own the game. Also if games went completely digital, then I'd have to buy the biggest SD cards and shell out big money just on those cards alone. Going completely digital would be one of the worst things that could happen to the gaming industry. |

As long as there is a demand people will supply it. Hell, I would not even be surprised if old consoles were to resurect, at least for a short period of time. But in the long run (5 to 10 years I would say), we will be "21st-century digital boys." People love the practicality of digital like I do. It is especially useful when moving around a lot! I can't imagine things will go full digital for a long time to come. Hard drive tech can only go so far, and modern games for consoles are just too big in terms of size for everything to be all digital. Unless we have a major breakthrough in hard drive and memory tech (and even then it would take some years to fully transition) it's too much data for things to go full digital. Discs are more appealing to many people as well. Having a physical copy of something can give it more meaning than it merely existing digitally. |
