Friends i told this too considered this very horrible i dont know why so im asking yall what you think.
When i was little i was terrified of the dark probably more scared than most kids. I hated any form of darkness; well what my friends considered horrible was that for punishment at night parents world lock me in my room with lights off for a while. Well, the "while" was always short cause i always cried and screamed till it annoyed them so they let me out even though they know how terrified of the dark i was

I would say that is horrible. I have 3 kids and I wouldn't dream of punishing them in this way. It serves absolutely no purpose from my point of view. All you learn is to be afraid of either the dark, or your parents, or of making a mistake (or all of the above and more).

That really sucks that they did that to you. Hopefully by at least talking about it you can understand it more and deal with it and move on. Tough to move on from something like that when you are (most likely) still living with the people that did it.

geeogree : I really didnt think anything of it until i brought it up to friends and they thought it was horrible. But where i live it is nothing cause where i live beatings is a punishment it seems people dont frown upon beating as a punishment. Beating seems to be praised, not the simple butt whooping though some dont mind if you just beat your kids as punishment

It appears that they're taking the Batman approach too seriously...

In all seriousness, though, I'm fully against punishment involving playing on your fears. Punishment should be done to correct, not to haunt. I think I'm safe when saying that your parents have a misconception as to what punishment is for.

Seems like an ineffective way to get rid of one's fears. As for being horrible, I don't find it quite there, but that is bad. Like. . . the most neutral kind of bad that there is.

I would. . . just let you grow out of it? Parents don't always need to take action with some issues.

TristanTehGamer1 : That is horrible. I was once terrified of the dark, too. Like some scary monster was going to come out and get me. I eventually overcame it. Well, at least it wasn't physical abuse or anything, right? And this fear of yours is no more, I take?

Yeah, that is horrible. Punishing your kids by exposing them to what they're really afraid of is one of the worse options. Parents shouldn't do it unless no other option works. Sorry to hear that you had to go through that.

I used to be pretty afraid of the dark as well. Sometimes I'm scared in the dark even now because my dogs lay on the floor in the dark right where I can trip on them and maybe even fall down the stairs.

I myself am scared of the dark, even though I'm 13. And yes, that's horrible. I would end up breaking down as well. But I will say, was there a light switch in the room? If so, why didn't you turn it on? But yes, it IS a horrible thing to do.

I used to be afraid of the dark as well. Getting punished like that actually got me over my fear pretty quickly, so I'm not against this kind of punishment.
I might be a bit biased because of my own experiences though.

Although I understand that they were trying to get you to face your fear, I feel like the way they went about it was HORRIBLE. No reason to mentally traumatize a kid just to try to force them to not be scared of the dark. Basically what they did is emotional abuse. I'm sorry that you had to go through that.

That....is really bad. I would had posted this ages ago but I couldn't. What is worse is locking little children in the dark as punishment. If you must punish your children then do it in the right way. Not one that will cause fear for them for the rest of their lives. I am going to be honest. I am afraid of the dark, but for whole lot of different reasons. So Tristan, if you want to know why about that pm me. As I won't say anything further about it on here. Most of us including me do understand, and what the parents did punishment wise was wrong.

This is terrible. I wouldn't wish it upon anybody. I'm sorry you had to go through that. I know you said you didn't really consider it to be bad but it is quite bad and horrible mainly because they were emotionally abusing you. It's good that you are not afraid anymore but one thing I know for sure is I would never do that to somebody or my own kids... that is just terrible.

That is what is wrong with kids today, parents won't make them face their fears. It is really no different than being told to sit in the corner for a few minutes. I do not think it was terrible,if anything they were trying to either toughen you up or let you cry yourself to sleep. Native Americans used to leave their kids on a branch when they started crying too much. Spartans ripped little boys away from their families at 6 or 7 years of age to become Spartans. Locking you in a dark room is nothing and I think a lot on here are making a mountain out of a molehill.
