Hello all. For those who do not know this erotic novel, which is part of a series by British author E.L. James, has taken literary culture by storm, selling 50 million copies worldwide and landing on the bedside table of millions of women in the process. It has been the center of attention for some time now, since it came out in print, and most recently since they announced it coming out in the movies. There have been senators, actors, actresses, and even the president has been asked and talked to about it. So I'll keep this simple and just ask these questions :
Have you read the novel and do you plan on seeing the movie ?
What did you think of the novel ?
Did it pique your curiosity and did anything in it shock you ?
Is it really all that great or just another dumb fad that will pass on quickly to be forgotten ?

The Novel was drab at best, but above all potentially toxic. It does not show a healthy relationship (there is a difference between kink and abuse) and since its release, BDSM-related accidents have increased. The reason it's popular is evaluate it appealed to the bookstore mom demographic for whom erotica is either twenty times worse than 50 shades or simply nonexistent. A culturally accepted erotic book for them is bound to sell like hot bread on Tuesday morning, seeing as some 40-50% live in dead bedrooms.
50 shades will most likely remain the largest phenomenon in written word erotica just because of its successful marketing and nearly captive audience, and not because of the quality or even shock value of the book.

I read some of the novel and I do not expect to see the movie.

The book is good because it can open up discussions with couples and people about their relationships and their fantasies.  It's something meant to engage couples.  Maybe the book depicts abuse or violence but that doesn't mean something more vanilla and satisfying can come out of a conversation between people in relationships.

I heard the movie was terrible and there's more titillating sex scenes in your average HBO movie.  I wouldn't see it for the sex because the Internet is readily available.  I'd see it for the relationship building and the discussion of how to get from point A to point B with another person.

If more people are getting hurt that means they're trying new things out.  Hopefully they are happy and they're enjoying themselves.  I get hurt playing soccer on occasion.  It doesn't mean I stop playing soccer.

Well....I was surprised to learn that the concept of the book was actually spawned from a fan fiction of Twilight.  And based off of that knowledge I'd think it's time in the spotlight might be similar to that of those books.  Though since I haven't read the book or seen the movie I could be entirely wrong.

I have not read the novel seeing as I am not a huge reader other than comic and manga but me and my sister both are wanting to watch the movie. We will either see it in theaters or when it comes out in HD online. Anyways were both excited :V

I haven't read the book nor seen the movie, so I really have no opinion on it.  I heard by review sites that the movie was very terrible as 50 Shades of Gray was getting very low scores.  I'm not planning on reading the book and I'm definitely not planning on seeing the movie if the reviews are true.

I read enough of the novel to have nightmares about being back with my former (HIGHLY ABUSIVE) boyfriend and having him controlling my every action again. I gave the book back to the person I had borrowed it from and told them that it was only the fact that the book wasn't mine that kept me from burning it for kindling.  What does that tell you?

I have not and
will not ever see the movie. The attention the whole thing (book, movie, whole nine yards) has gotten world-wide has kind of left me sickened.  So many people don't see the abuse that is splattered on everything, and now more people are going to think this sort of thing is normal and right when in fact, it's sick and twisted. It makes me fear for people who have never been in an abusive situation and so aren't aware that this sort of thing is abuse. It's NOT BSDM when it isn't secure and safe for both parties. It's not endearing when someone exhibits stalker behaviour and tries to control what you do, who you see, and where you go. It's not love when someone makes you feel like you're WORTHLESS without them. It's not okay when someone scares you half to death, then turns around and makes you feel like your fear is your fault and you hurt THEM, so that you wind up comforting them and staying with them 'to make them feel better', despite your own misgivings.

ALL OF THAT is abuse, and people are normalizing it.

It's interesting to see the change in public opinion about highly erotic and sexual content.

This is certainly not my kind of movie, and won't be seeing it. But it's funny how about 10 years ago, such a movie wouldn't have had good box office success. It would of been for weird people who like "softcore porn". But all it takes is mob mentality and that a book is "popular" for it to be completely acceptable. It's interesting, isn't it?

Light Knight :  Both interesting and sad, in my opinion. Then again, just about everything is sexualized nowadays.  Sex isn't seen as sacred to our culture any more.

I have absolutely no intents to ever read the book or see the movie, as I can't do so in moral conscious.
