Yes, I know that there are probably other threads with the exact same purpose here on the Board (I couldn't find any) and that this is a tough subject to touch upon on the Internet in general, but anyway... What is your sincere opinions on the furry fandom and everything that it encompasses (which is A LOT of stuff, BTW)?

But first, it's good to note that we are not, in any way, a bunch of sex-obsessed freaks like the mass media presents us at... Well, most of us aren't. While there is a growing fraction of furs, known as yiffies, that are only in the fandom to appease to their sexual fetishes, in the end furries are just normal people that succumbed to their creative impulses in odd, never-before-seen and sometimes mind-blowing ways. A sex-driven subculture wouldn't have its own superstars, villains, meeting spots (both virtual and real), entertainment, slang and media, would it? And let's admit it: Every furry has a kink or two...

And while the furry fandom is a notable one due to its multitude of influences and originators, some furs take its main concepts and philosophies and apply them to other, better-known media, originating a multitude of sub-fandoms - most notably Pokefurs, Bronies, and a fraction of StarFox and Sonic The Hedgehog fans that create often crappy original characters and plots in these pre-set universes. While good things can come out of such people, most of the time their creative output is downright shockingly terrible, showing a tremendous lack of creativity (by using trademarked characters and plot elements) and good sense (by putting them in absurd situations, as is the norm for the pseudo-genre). Why don't they just join the "main" fandom already and put their brains to work?

But probably the most infamous of these niche groups of furries are the Otherkin. They take the fandom's whole concept a few steps further by claiming that they aren't human, but rather poor animal souls trapped inside despicable human bodies. The subculture is arguably much older than the fandom itself, originating from the Xamanistic traditions of North-American Indians, but that's a completely different subject I prefer not to touch upon. I don't know much about it, either...

So, guys and gals, the discussion is officially open! Share your thoughts, opinions and experiences involving the amazing world of the furries below!~

Regardless of what they say to the contrary...

I think "all" furries are weird, and generally, they do a fantastic job of creeping me out.

I have a neutral opinion of furries. I am not weirded out, but I am also not jumping with glee at the sight of one. To put it bluntly: I do not care what someone likes, as long as they don't try and force me to like a particular thing. Most are okay. To be honest, I also don't mind the more sexual aspect of the more minor groups. I'm indifferent towards everything as long as it doesn't actually harm someone.

I basically feel the same way as Sop281
I have nothing against the culture in the slightest.
Personally, I don't get it. It does seem a bit weird to me,
but hey, things I do seem weird to others as well, so....
If it makes you happy and doesn't hurt anyone, I say congrats on finding something that clicks with you
Have fun

I find it highly bizarre, especially the fact you seem to have 'sects'.
The "otherkin"?
To me it sounds like a sci fi plot.
I love sci fi, but I don't let it detach me from reality.

People are free to do as they please, but I really don't understand it.

legacyme3 : Well, I get your point. I just hope you don't get so uncomfortable around me and the other furs here on Vizzed :3

sop281 : Heh, glad to see someone with a neutral opinion, especially regarding the kinkier aspects.

baileyface544 : Everyone is weird in their own way, after all!~

thenumberone : Sects? Hmm, that's another way to look at it. And about the Otherkin... Yeah, it's complicated. Most of them tend to consider themselves not a part of the fandom, but then most furries tend to consider themselves as 'kins and in some cases even have it as their official religion... There's actually a lot of drama and discussion between the two (this applies to all the fandom and its "sects", sadly), but in the end they are two wholly different movements that share some basic ideals and that more often than not entangle themselves into a single web. After all you can have a fairy and other fantasy creatures as your otherkin, but not as your fursona (dragons are an exception)

I don't really mind fandoms like bronies and hamhams (or whatever they're called), though I do still think it's weird. But with furries? I honestly think it's weird. I don't really know how to explain it, I just find all furries at least mildly disturbing. Then when they bring it into real life and wear tails and fox ears everywhere, that's where I start hiding from reality.

I don't insult furries because hey, they're just people in a weird fandom. And I've never heard of the Otherkin, but that sounds creepy as hell.

(Don't be offended by this) To be honest, I think furries are odd. Especially the bronies. Why do furries enjoy pretending to be anthropomorphic animals? I personally enjoy being a human . The ones that weird me out the most, though, are the ones that  wear animal-like accessories in real life and the ones who draw sexual furry fan art. That last one is just plain weird. I'm more weirded out by the concept rather than the people, though. Most furries are nice, and as pollution_skunk said, don't do the sexual roleplaying stuff or whatever. Altogether, I just don't really understand furries.

This one is an interesting topic for me, because it's a subject in which my opinion did a total 180 recently.

Hop in a time machine and go back about 4 or 5 years, and I'll tell you that I hate furries. They're weird and disgusting and despicable.

But those opinions were made largely out of ignorance. A couple of things happened that made me do a flip-flop in my judgment of furries. First of all, I dated one. For about a year, I was in a serious relationship with a girl whose fursona was an arctic fox. She revealed this to me about two weeks after we started dating, and at first I was irritated, but I really liked her, so I was willing to give it a chance. Over time, I began to grow fond of them and I've even made friends with many furries, some of which are within an internet community for artists (50/50 SFW/NSFW, so I'm not linking) which I'm now active in every day since last November. I like to call myself a "part-time furry" these days, if that makes any sense. It's all a little too much to explain in this post. ^.^///

That girl and I aren't dating anymore, but I'm glad she made me more open-minded, otherwise I wouldn't have some treasured friends that I have today.

EDIT: I still think this site has an unhealthy Pokemon obsession, though

Zurenriri : Heh, I can understand you. FurAffinity, InkBunny and many other furry sites also have a somewhat large number of non-anthro artists active among the community who appreciate and/or are big fans of furry art, so you can consider yourself a semi-fur :3

I see you're an otaku too! Even though I'm not one myself, it's a well-known fact that both fandoms frequently intersect in more than one way.

Furries are a complicated subject. I don't really get why people chose to do it. It is not that I care or take offence when I see one. I Just don't get why they are doing it (That being said I never have really asked).
I was reading your post and I got from it that there are a lot of different reasons but what I think is that what it really comes down to is they are doing it because they are seeking attention. I don't know if this makes me sound judgmental but I think that if people are doing things that make them stick out then they are doing it because they want the attention that it brings them.
I hope that my post has not offended you I just wanted to express the thoughts I have when I see one.

I don't mind furries; usually. I only get annoyed when they think i'm a furry (a lot of people seem to think a Pokemon avatar = furry) or use explicit furry avatars. I also get annoyed when they try to shove it in your face, but that goes with any fandom.

rjfmoulton : Some do it for attention (I know of a few people), others do it because they long for a different form of expression. Some of us can be blamed on excessive watching of late 80s and early 90s TV programs.

I say that if that's what you enjoy, go ahead. It isn't bad for you to do such a thing. The people that find it weird are just unaccepting of other people's views. Going online and doing stuff like this isn't detrimental to anyone, and as long as it isn't a crappy Sonic fan character that you roleplay as, I don't care!

(note, some fan characters are OK, but most are lazy recolors)

pollution_skunk : honestly, not a big fan of furries. They do a hella good job of creeping me the hell out. While I don't excessively hate on curries, I don't excessively like dem, either.

noahs_brother : Hey man, curry is great. I mean I understand if you don't like some of the ones you tasted but there's so much out there! Many cultures use curry as a base to all their meals and it's a common meal all across the world. I also don't see why curry would creep you out, like of all the food out there you're creeped out by curry?

Many cultures use curry as a base to all their meals and it's a common meal all across the world. I also don't see why curry would creep you out, like of all the food out there you're creeped out by curry?

I can't say that I'm a big fan of furries. I find it a little weird that people want to be like animals, adore animals more than humans, or find interests in being part animal... part human.  In my opinion, being human is amazing and a wonderful gift.

I don't think all the people that like them are weird... but it's certainly not something I could ever get into.

It doesn't really creep me out, but I think it's odd. I don't really understand why you would want to be a bronie/ furry etc. or anything like that, but it's whatever... I mean if it floats your boat, that's fine with me.

To be honest, I don't really care too much about these furrys, even know yes, I am on a couple furry websites, so I see a bunch of them and they don't bother me at all. Basicly it's like playing cos-play or dressing up in adult halloween costumes of creatures. It seems weird that it's rising in popularity, but hey, it's your life, not mine, I don't really care on what you do.

But yeah, some people can be interested in associated fandoms. As being a former Flock member myself (Angry Birds fan), being in a part of a fanbase, some people can be alright with it and some people, well, goes way over the limit with re-colors and what not, and having a DeviantART account, I see a bunch of these from time to time.
