This game has bee called a favorite by many and I can see why. Nothing is better than just picking up a controller and playing Mario games. However this game makes you pick up a controller and never take your eyes off the TV! Everything is just so bright and colorful and definitely pushes the NES to its limit.
GRAPHICS: 8
The graphics in this game are extremely good for NES standards let alone a Mario game. Most of the background is just clouds, hills, and one color. Mario looks just like he did in the original Super Mario Bros, but a little bit lighter.
The weird thing is that when Mario is in a stage his clothes are black and red, but in the intro for a match up game his clothes are now blue and red. I just thought that was something to point out.
SOUND: 10
Each theme in the game is unique and can really fits in with each level. The ones it fits in the most with would probably be the water levels and the castle levels. Each map has it's own theme Like the desert world has a desert theme, the water world has a beach theme, but the one I don't get is world 6 which is the frozen world and it has a really creepy theme the doesn't really fit. At first I thought it was because everything was frozen and empty, but then it was reused in Paper Mario 2 as the creepy message theme which was confusing.
ADDICTIVENESS: 10
Like I said earlier, your probably never going to want to put the controller down once you start playing this. There's so many levels and mini games to try out. If you're playing with a friend then you'll have even more fun! Enough said.
STORY: 6
The story is the same. Bowser nabbed the princess and brought her to his castle or lair or whatever and of course you, the fat Itallian plumber, have to save her, whoopdy freaking do! Although this time, Bowser sent out his kids (How did Bowser get kids?) to stop you and for some reason they like turning kings into animals.
DEPTH: 9
There is a lot and I mean A LOT to do in this game. Over 50 stages, hammer bros. and boomerang bros. you'll come across, and mini games that almost never stop coming. Nintendo got a little lazy with the bosses though. Most of the time you'll come across castles and at the end there is ALWAYS something called a Boom Boom, but they're easy to kill which isn't a problem. The koopa kids or koopalings as they're called are all the same, they die in 3 hits and drop a wand when you defeat them. The Bowser fight is a lot more creative since you have to make Bowser smash blocks with his butt so that he'll fall out out the ship and come back in Super Mario World.
DIFFICULTY: 9
This game is not easy at all. Even the most hardcore gamer has to die at least once while playing this. The reason? THE PITFALLS! There are WAY too many pitfalls in this game and they're really irritating when trying to preform a long jump. The enemies are a a real pain but the boos (ghosts) annoy me the most since they'll always gang up on you when you're not looking and kill you. There are sometimes white bars that will have ghosts on them and you always have to jump over them. There is one water level where there's a bunch of whit bars cheep cheeps (fish) and bloopers (squids) which you have to dodge with perfect timing.
OVERALL: 9.9
This is probably what makes the Mario games so well known to people. If you have an NES, buy this now. If you don't, go buy one with this.
