A bill is proposed to put people to jail if you stream copyright material. This means that anyone who post copyrighted music, video clips, or play throughs of video games more than 10 times will be sent to jail if this bill pass. Some say that this bill is so broad that people who lip-sync with a copyrighted song or film a video of someone singing a karaoke would be prosecuted. Disagreement was recently more expressed by the gaming community because of the possibility prosecuting "Let's Play" videos with how broad this bill is. What do you think?

Here is the text of the proposed bill:
http://www.govtrack.us/congress/billtext.xpd?bill=s112-978

I've heard about this and I'm not impressed. I understand why it's been introduced but I think it's too open-ended in what it could be used to prosecute.

If it were more specific then it wouldn't be as much of a problem.

I also think it should be up to the company to want to prosecute.... if the ocmpany that owns the rights to a game or move or music wants to prosecute then they can use this bill to go after people.

I love LPers. If this bill was passed, most of them would be wiped out, and when I'm not on Vizzed, I'm most likely watching them.

I don't agree with this bill at all, if you can tell.

I would have to agree with geeogree. This bill is too open-ended. Personally, I think this will allow companies to prosecute over games that we would consider abandonware, along with the hacked version. Maybe I am stating this out of fear more than anything, but I believe that passing this bill will take away the life-blood of Vizzed. If there is going to be any amendments to Section 2319 they need to be more specific about what is prosecutable.

Thankfully, living in Canada this doesn't involve me... directly.

But of course, like any gamer, I enjoy watching Playthroughs, LP's more then any playthroughs. And this Bill, I understand how it's not meant to go after video gamers and the like, but it is far too broadly described, and the way it is now, it would do far more harm then it would good.

I'd imagine IF this bill passes, a lot of game companies will change their TOS to allow the creation of video's for their games. It's like free advertising for them; it is how they thrive most of the time.

I heard that Capcom apparently got pretty pissed off about this Bill. I don't know the specific details if it's true though.

Hmm...I'm not impressed in the slightest bit.

Firstly, the United states already got these laws in place, for the most part, but this is a new, scarier wording, Being a Canadian, I am protected from this law, but if this is passed...I doubt they can do a lot. I mean, look at the American debt now, can it really be afforded to take away an entire market! By watching online reviews we determine to buy games and other products by the company, and through ad revenue money is earned. Also, suing people who downloaded illegally only regains 10% of the money spent on trying to sue them in the first place and does not even come close to covering to the money potentially lost through fraudulent means.

Thus, I expect this bill to be done purely for scare factor...they will nab a few people, including a high profile person, scare the populace, then drop it for the most part.

On the whole, I think it is donkey feces.

I agree with redrunelord, that this is mostly going to be used to scare people away from sharing copyrighted material. If they sent every one to jail who broke this law, it would cost the American people a lot of much money in taxes.

I also agree with others who say this bill is way to open ended . I could technically be sent to jail for playing songs on the guitar that I didn't write, and that is just absurd. It's a good thing I live in Canada!

This is corporate America at its finest worst.

smotpoker86 : The only way people outside of the U.S will be hit hard depends on Google, as this is the American firm and YouTube may or may not get hit hard community wise. I say may or may not because Google may ignore this law and proceed as normal, or they may be scared by it and start waving the banhammer, as Jagex used to put it so eloquently. Should this occur, the user should not be at risk beyond a ban from the site, and Google would receive the flak. If that should happen, I would expect people to transfer to an European based site or something.

I doubt we have much reason to be concerned overall, but how Google will react (due to their network neutrality policy) and how this will affect users outside of the U.S for YouTube.

Bah, I don't like this law. Sure, copyrights are being infringed everywhere, but this is much too broad and would practically make the internet collapse.

Also, if this bill passes, would the RGR exist anymore?

the_casualty : I wondered the same thing, and RGR and RTR would be at risk because of the nature of the site. It would depend largely where the servers are hosted, and if Davideo can host this site in a Canadian, European, or Oceanic server.

the_casualty :

I would think that would be the case, but I'm not positive.

Strictly speaking, the RGR is available because of the legality of it. If this bill passes, it could be the end of everything awesome on the internet.

The economy would explode

America will die.

I hope the bill makers are reading this. They need to understand the severity.

A bill like this sounds like it would create a lot of trouble with the online community. Like the first post said, I'm especially worried about LP's that could get kicked out. The point of LP's is to make a run through a game fun and interesting through the eyes of a gamer. If those got taken down, then Youtube would be back to being about boring cats playing keyboards or babies giggling.

If this bill were to pass then that means EVERYONE on the internet has potential to be sued including search engines. Search Engines stream copyrighted content, steal photos from websites, steal videos from websites so why should they be able to do it if we can't?

Lets make it illegal to pass bills like this which put people in jail, the same people who get corporations and government rich in the first place.

Only time someone should get sued over copyrights is if another corporation steals it and profits from it. I find it stupid to sue your customers / fans... you know the people who make you famous and rich. Only reason people stream your content is because they are POOR, they cannot afford to keep making you rich any longer.

Its the companies right to decide what action they want to take not governments. The only reason this law is proposed is to make money off fans by sending them to jail which in return means government would cash in on your crime and perhaps distribute a portion to the corporation.

My opinion is if you are a fan or have purchased something you have every right to distribute it, burn it, and wipe your a$$ with it. My name is copyrighted, and if I find my name printed on any government documents I have every right to sue them for everything they got. I can sue search engines for stealing my text, the list can go on. This law will be pandemonium
