I understand the draw of FPS and the online experience. I know that they are fun and getting to play against people from around the world is exhilarating. I know that it is just a video game because I use that argument for video game violence.

But why are kids so attracted to FPS? Why not pick up a good puzzler or RPG? Why participate in such needless carnage, even in a video game?

The reason I bring that up is because I was in chat yesterday and a few of the regulars were posting about "sticking a Glock in someone's mouth and pulling the trigger to make a brain slushy." I realize that it was just words and American English is a violent language anyways, but some of these kids were thirteen and fourteen!

Now I'm not going to claim that all other games besides FPS are violence-free because I know they are not. GTA is very violent and I love playing that game. Many of the RPG I have played have been violent, and I like the Mature games because it appeals to my tastes. But I am thirty years old and a majority of the people playing these FPS are underage, many of them around thirteen.

I know that FPS are not entirely devoid of redeeming qualities, that they increase hand-eye coordination and there is some tactical-thinking happening and that it does increase the ability to think on the fly. But I want kids to stop playing the aggressively violent games as much. Try playing a game with a plot for a while or a puzzler that makes you use your brain in different ways.

I was just using my scant knowledge about that as a starting point. Can you tell me that not every FPS is not like that?

Not all of these M rated first person shooters are what they were at the time due to graphics getting better as time goes on. I play Wolfenstein 3D around my 4 year old nephew, and let him try his hand at it. It's pretty much an extremely mild T rated game nowadays, at least to me. There's also the game Mirror's Edge, which isn't violent at all. It's more of a game that happens to be in the first person perspective, but it also has shooting, and the game requires thinking to play well. Then there Bioshock.

Bioshock is pretty easy, but it's another FPS that requires thinking. "What powers should be used at what point?" is one question one may ask as they play, for example. The game has a storyline that makes you think about the story's deeper meanings, as well. Then we have Wolfenstein. While a very basic FPS, this one has a good story. It isn't just shoot and pwn.

It requires just as much thought to be good at online play in CoD, by the way. I only played a CoD game for about 15 minutes at a cousin's house and didn't play it online, but I played Uncharted 2 online, and while that is a third person shooter, it's still a shooter. My experience with that game's online was bad since most people just threw a grenade near them so they'd get a kill when I got a kill, but yeah... Bad example. I'll just use co-op stuff as a better example. In order to do well for your team in these games, or do well with another person, you need to really figure out how to work together.

I'm 16, by the way, and started playing M rated games when I was 15. One of the first M rated games I bought was Silent Hill 2, and that game is pretty violent. It actually changed what sort of media I found favorable. I played through that game, and took an interest in psychological horror.

That personal story aside, I've played Fallout 3, and it's quite violent. I actually was laughing at every spilling of blood.

M also means Mature. Yeah, it says an age on it, but mature doesn't mean every 17 year old can handle the content of the game. I can handle quite a lot of mature content because I'm aware of the game not being real life. I played Bayonetta, and even though I'm a female, I wasn't disturbed by the way women were portrayed in that game. In fact... I'd watch the credits of that game 10 times in one day just because of how awesomely sexistly funny they are.

I'd recommend checking out the game Bioshock and the two big guys of the early days of FPS's: Doom and Wolfenstein 3D. Also, Mirror's Edge is a good game just for how well it does the concept of parkour being used for travel. It has some less than stellar controls, but they aren't terrible. Wolfenstein isn't anything entirely different, but it's a fun game.

I've played Doom and Wolfenstein as I was a kid when they came out. I also posted that I realize that there are ups to FPS, I also wrote that there are too many kids playing these games. I wrote that kids should try playing something besides these gory, violent games sometimes and try a puzzle game or RPG.
I know that there are many violent and bloody RPG and hybrid puzzle games and those are much better than the straight out violence and shooting of most FPS.

In case you didn't realize I am a thirty-year old man so I may have been playing games longer than you've been alive.

No, I never posted that FPS "suck" in any way. I just believe that there are too many people, and kids mostly, that play those too much. They need to expand their horizons with other types of games.

Bobbynibbles : I tend to mostly play RPGs, and action games myself. also often play arcade style games like Naughty Bear. Another type of game I play often is survival horror and action horror games.

I can see why you'd have a problem with kids playing the popular FPS games. I don't really care, personally, as I just don't see any harm unless the kid has no idea what the difference between fact and fiction is.

As for people who have small areas of interests, oh well. I find it sad that people will stick with only a small variety, but that's their choice. I'm showing my nephew many different types of video games. He's getting into fighting games lately. Ever since I showed him Devil May Cry 3(yes, he's 4, and yes, that one isn't exactly something a 4 year old should see, but he's a smart kid who knows whatever he sees in video games isn't real.) he's been wanting to play games with blood.

He mostly plays racing games and driving games, but I want him to have an interest in other types of games.

I don't think that video games can be blamed for the kid's violent talk. I played violent video games for as long as I can remember them. However, my parents set some boundaries for me to follow. I was not to re-enact them for pretend or talk about doing so for real or for play. Doing so meant I couldn't play them until I showed them that I learned my lesson. So I had it put into my mind that the behavior on violent video games was for video games only and not appropriate to joke about in the real world. I'm 23 years old now, and from what I have been seeing is that parents are less and less interactive with their kids now. They prop them in front of the tv and video games and expect those to keep them occupied. So kids aren't getting the parental involvement to keep them from such behavior.

Although, after taking numerous classes in genetics, I have learned that your genetic makeup can be a part of determining your tendency to be influenced by such things. This is where there natur vs nurture takes place. There isn't a gene you can get that determines whether you are violent or capable of brutality or such. But your genetic makeup effects a certain ratio. Some genetic makeup will require a certain amount of nurture influence to not display the behavior. Some makeups require higher ratio of nurture to overthrow the makeup, while others require lower. I think I was on the lower side because not only do I not show the behaviors, I also do not have those feelings for the most part. But in the end, parental involvement is the most significant variable that determines their kid's behavior.

rcarter2 : I realize that playing video games doesn't make a person violent. My biggest point is just that young kids are playing these games too much and that they should play something less violent and with more story or even a brain game like a puzzler.

Bobbynibbles : Oh, trust me. I agree with you completely. I reread my post, and I realized I did kind of go off the point of the tread. They really are playing them way too much. I work for a mental health center. Specifically, I work with individual kids at the center. Most of their parents allow them to sit on their buts playing things like GTA or FSP. From what I see, the ones who only own those kid of games are the ones who talk about it constantly and are the most aggressive and oppositional. It is also the ones who tend to be the less intelligent. Probably because the games they play don't stimulate their minds in any way. They tend to be less creative, probably because the only things they play don't really involve them in their world past the desire to slaughter.

Sorry for kind of getting off topic. Again, I agree. If underage kids are going to be allowed to play such games of 'mindless carnage', as you put it, then they should at least have to broaden their playing field that provides other benefits other than increasing hand eye coordination and talking about turning each others brains into slush.

I agree. First person shooters can be fun, but it's redundant to play those everyday. I personally love RPGs myself and I feel that puzzle/adventure/platform games would also be a good change of pace than always playing COD or GTA.

Bobbynibbles : That's really true, I rarely play FPS games, but when I do, I play GTA and Halo.

Yes, GTA is very violent, but Halo isn't really THAT violent, because it's sci-fi, not realistic.

I'm almost sixteen this July 20, and I'm ashamed to say I like the M games than the E games, but even so, I still love the E / T rated games!

rcarter2 : Your observations are quite accurate, but I've met some pretty calm people who were playing GTA and the like below the age of 16. I know one person who's actually highly intelligent, and plays Halo. He's lazy for reasons I'll never know, though... I know people who could play games like Resident Evil that are violent. A good friend of mine is that person. She has issues, though... Yeah.

I used to play just E and T rated games, and I played a good variety of games. I wasn't someone you'd expect to not see almost ready to break something, though. I had some anger problems when I was younger, and even punched someone. I still have anger problems, but the violent video games aren't giving the anger more food. I'm actually much less angry all the time now.

Games like Borderlands are pretty far from mindless, too. Not sure if many children play that game, but you can't just grab a random gun and expect to beat the game with ease. You can try, but you won't expect much fun out of playing the game in that manner. Fallout 3 can be played that way, but it won't reward you for it if you decide to go into the Super Mutant areas while using some pistol.

Both of those games have RPG elements, but they focus a lot on shooting. Also, Nibbles, kids don't tend to pay attention to a game's storyline. They pay more attention to gameplay. At least my nephew who's 4 is one of those kids who thinks text in a game or cutscenes in a game makes the game a movie.

Of course. I would never claim that the only ones who have anger issues or related behaviors are those who play violent games or those who play those are the only ones who exhibit the behavior. I just see a pattern from working at the mental health center in the clients I see. The ones who own only those type of games are typically the ones who have nearly identical behavior, anger, and impulse control issues. Of course there are many who play them a lot and are not affected by it (I am definitely one of those people. I am a very calm person). I have not heard of Borderlands. What is it for?

I agree completely, and I also dislike it when people make out all these FPS games to be like, the BEST GAMES EVER, when in fact the only thing that's really good about it is how fun it is to gun people down and play against people online. The plots of most of them can be really cliché or just not very well done. Plus there are simply too many FPS games out there, and most don't even try to expand on the genre as much.
