I'm someone who has mostly sat out recent Pokemon games. I don't like how streamlined they have become since around gen 6 or so, nor how gamefreak doesn't seem to try change up the formula much. It has seemed a bit uninspired.

With that said I've been hearing some surprisingly positive things from friends about Scarlet and Violet. I thought about picking it up, since I like the concept of a completely open world Pokemon game but the disappointing graphics and lack of level scaling has made me hold off on it so far.

I'd love to hear some thoughts on it, have you played it? And if so, do you think I should get it?

I think the best experience with Scarlet and Violet is if you can play it with a friend just getting to run around the world with friends is really fun and adds to it. The overworld graphics are disappointing as you said but I've not heard very many people talk about how they retextured a lot of Pokémon to look more detailed even if they are still using the old gen 6 models they look way better having the extra details they added this time around. The annoying thing with no level scaling is the game 100% has a set order it wants players to do everything but nothing in the game tells you that order so if you wanna fight everything at the right level you have to look it up which I found annoying. I'll say the stories or well at least 2 of the 3 are far better than most Pokémon games but I don't think they really compare with other triple A games on the switch that focus on story telling.

I don't know if any of my thoughts will help but that's pretty much my thoughts on the game I think.

I've enjoyed it a lot. The performance issues honestly are a bit overblown, there's a few areas or cutscenes with a lot of background NPC's that can get a bit choppy and there are a few areas of the map that don't run well but overall traversing the map is a smooth experience.

My biggest issue was the lack of level scaling. Looking up a spoiler free guide of the 'correct' order might be necessary, but even then you probably want to have more Pokemon in your rotation than just one team of 6. I think in total I ended up using like 10-12 Pokemon throughout the game. It helps that I think this is the strongest regional dex since gen 5, there are a lot of fun and well designed Pokemon this time around (first generation with over 100 new Pokemon since gen 5).

Multiplayer is the biggest draw to me, it's super fun to see your friends running around or battling in the background while you're doing your own thing. If you have a friend with the opposite version to yours, you can even encounter their version exclusives while you're in the same world together and vice versa.

Story wise it's the best since gen 5. It doesn't feel forced and overdramatic like gen 6, there aren't horrendous cutscenes every two seconds like gen 7, there's just 3 nice storylines that delve more into the characters and their backgrounds and motivations than to create some edgy plot.

It's interesting to hear about the multiplayer, didn't really know much about it before making this thread. Sounds like more along the lines of what Join Avenue from Generation 5 actually should've been like.

Right now, I am probably leaning towards checking it out at some point in the future, if only because of the improved narrative. I haven't really enjoyed a mainline Pokemon entry's story since Gen 5 and before.

Although the lack of level scaling does still bother me. It feels like something they could've so easily included in some form but didn't, likely because of the extra time it would've taken in terms of planning different team rosters. Guess that's another issue that can be chalked up to not giving it more time in the oven.

The game was the most fun that I had with a Pokemon game since Black 2. I didn't really care too much about the graphics stufff but I thought it was one of the best soundtracks in the entire franchise and I loved having all the Pokemon in the overworld which made things like shiny hunting grinding a lot easier and more fun in some cases.

I also absolutley loved the story, especially for Team Star and Arven, it just felt way more relatable than what you usually get out of Pokemon.

I wonder how long until we see the new protagonist in the games, (heck I'm wondering if they are soft rebooting the franchise)

I personally enjoyed pokemon violet a lot. It's not just the open world that makes it fun, but also how accessible certain items (like nature mints, choice items, vitamins, and so on) can be. some are expensive though, but the point is you can get a lot of them and optimize your team before the league even. a lot of new pokemon are also very cool..i played the game as spoiler free as i could, and i was positively by some of the new pokemon's designs, typings, abilities, new moves...

the game is not without flaws, though. it can get "glitchy", and joy con drift can be annoying. if you think you're not that strict when it comes to gameplay, I say go for it. the story is also well done in case the story interests you

Man, I have a lot to say about Scarlet and Violet. It's really all over the place for me honestly and it's a complete mess of a game that honestly I didn't think I would play, but my sister got it for me and we spent time together. I think this game is actually really great, and probably near my top 5 of all the Pokemon Mainline games (including Remakes) but the problem lies mostly in just how broken everything feels.

The Framerates are extremely dodgy. Sometimes it works just fine and you have absolutely no issues. Other times you have framerate issues in the most basic of cutscenes. It can be a unorthodox game to go through with how many Glitches are in it and just does feel like it's underwhelming graphically. It seems like a game that really isn't worth the hype and just should of had another year to be QA tested and checked for Bugs. Instead it feels like they just threw it on the Oven just long enough to look on the outside as it it wasn't falling apart at the seems.

It doesn't help that I think some of the Pokemon Designs in this game just aren't that great. There are exceptions of course, but a good handful just don't really interest me and honestly it's a shame. I felt the same way about Gen 8 so I guess that might just be me losing interest in the designs.

I also think that the difficulty is generally just not well balanced. Sure it's supposed to be like that given it's a open world game, but I think it's more on the easy side then it is the Hard Side. I could only recall a few times where I actually had difficulty in the game but that's because I was going after much higher level Pokemon and Titans that were off in the distance. The True Final Boss is also somewhat hard, but it's at least supposed to be like that. Other then that, it didn't feel as rewarding of an experience to playthrough as I hoped.

Ranting aside though, I actually really enjoy this game cause it's really fun to explore and I actually did do that a majority of the time cause I genuinely think that this is where a lot of the soul was put into the game. Catching Pokemon is made a lot easier and more fulfilling, doesn't feel all that taxing looking around new places, just overall fun.

I really enjoyed the Gym Leaders too spite of how little I felt challenged by most of them, their designs and challenges make the world feel a lot more alive and give you the chance to usually explore the town you got to and get to know the residents.

The story too I feel is one of the better stories of the Pokemon series and a much needed improvement after how I feel SwSh did theirs. While I don't feel like it seamlessly pulled them together at the end, I really enjoyed the banter and character development that the secondaries got. Arven has to probably be one of my new Favorite characters of the series just because of how much you get to bond and develop with the character as a whole.

But overall, like I said I think this game is great! I wish though that the game was even better then it is now cause it's still got major issues. Game Freak keeps pushing out products like this that aren't well optimized and it makes me question them. I wish they would take the time to at least make it not the mess it is during the launch period and instead focus their efforts on bringing a better experience overall.

I don't think they're bad, but they certainly aren't as good as the games in the past. GameFreak has obviously not figured out how to use the switch to its full potential, especially with graphics, which is my main complaint about the new games. They just look so bad. I think Sword and Shield are my favorite of the "newer" games, even though they are getting old by today's standards.

The gameplay is still the same old fun Pokemon gameplay, and I think as long as they keep putting out games that have the same general theme and idea, people will keep buying them and they won't make a better product. I only get the games as gifts because, quite frankly, I don't really believe they are worth the $60 they sell for, but I will gladly accept them as gifts and play them.

As for the Legends of Arceus game, I actually thought it was pretty cool. They added a whole new idea to the pokemon world and I do really think it worked out positively. The catching the pokemon on the battlefield, while not completely new, was a good addition to a main series game.

Scarlet and Violet look like a lot of fun and a decent enough start to bigger main series titles. Legends had a lot of different features to it and I would love to see more like that in a future game. When Legends came out I was amazed at a prequel story and really wanted a mainline Pokemon game that had modern features in a world like that, and then one was released not even a year later!

Sadly, I have not played any of these games. I know the chances at a Switch Pro are pretty low given Nintendo's statements, but I was hoping for it. I feel bad for GameFreak's team increasing in size so drastically and having so much more work to do while meeting the same insane deadlines to pump out Pokemon games.

I have watched more than my fair share of gameplay footage and some twitch streams, so I know it would be a great game. It just doesn't run very well and has a lot of glitches, so I was waiting for a patch that would fix these problems and give some more stable framerates and whatnot. It looks like the console is on the verge of crashing processing some of the pokemon spawning in, and it looks super muddy with textures that look super stretched out. They should have gone with a more cel shaded approach artistically to save on processing space because the details look pretty rough in a way Breath of the Wild didn't.

I'm definitely going to play them at some point, but I'm waiting and hoping for better. New Pokemon Snap was a similar way, you could only see three or four Pokemon on the screen at a time and it looked super barren at times compared to the original, but after the free update they added nearly an extra game's worth of content. I'm just hoping for some better performance, and Pokemon Go connectivity which is coming in the summer.

I own Legends Arceus, and I have technically played it, but I have basically only completed the tutorial. So I cannot really comment on it.

I have beaten Pokemon Scarlet, however. Honestly, I liked it, but it doesn't come close to the GBA and DS era. It's definitely better than Sword and Shield. There is more to do, and the open world component is much more fleshed out. The story line sucks though, you aren't able to obtain all of the Pokemon, and the depth is just kind of underwhelming. I think it's definitely worth playing. I enjoy it. Just don't expect the quality that Pokemon games used to have.
