The site revenue from ads has only been average around US $300 a month this year. The server fees and domain fees average nearly $500 a month. Around 40% of the site's traffic is using ad block. That's a lot of revenue the site is missing out on. I've been testing out a new ad network lately and I plan to also test out ad placement on the site in the coming days and weeks but something that may see quicker results is the ad block detection.

If a viewer has ad block enabled on Vizzed, they'll get a full screen message asking them to disable the ad block on Vizzed. It wont interfere with page loading and it's easy to click out of. I have it set to alert the viewer every 15 minutes but I'll probably change that to every 1 hour.

Here's what it looks like

Additionally, I'm working on making the areas that normally would have an ad for ad blockers show different content. Like a reminder to disable ad block, an encouragement to donate to the site, a message about our patreon page, etc. This stuff use to appear but stopped after my ad block detection script stopped working.

The site averages maybe $10 a month in donations and the Patreon page currently generates less than $20 a month. People who use ad block hurt the site financially since they use resources that cost money but don't do their part in paying it back with ad viewing (it'd be like if everyone stopped paying taxes, their country would collapse). Of course there have been many users who have contributed to the site either financially or with content, and they deserve to have no ads and generally they don't have to view ads because they've received access to features on the site that disable ads.

Let me know if you have any questions or concerns.

We all know that there are sites out there which flood the page with ads, some even popping on new tabs or windows. I have a mobile game that displays ads mid-game in one of its modes, and even my phone's gallery viewer displays ads (yikes!).

Given this general disinterest for user experience and prioritizing they must make money at any cost, even if it means illogically, it's understandable some people just go adblock all the way. However, Vizzed's ads are well placed, they don't mess up the user experience and they also don't include audio or ads that can't be closed or avoided.

I wish people would actually analyze what ads does a site show and give it a shot if their experience isn't affected. Hopefully with this advice you're testing we'll get more people to give Vizzed the opportunity it deserves and let ads display freely.

Do you think you could add to that advice a link to a thread where users can report ads? Maybe that would also entice guests to register, since they'd see our commitment to user experience and how open we are to any kind of feedback.

I didn't know there was quite that much space on this site filled with games, wow LOL. But yeah, like EX Palen said, the ads here have been placed on good parts of the pages. Also, many of the ads I've seen here are so much better than the ads I get from youtube! Youtube's ads get really bad/annoying fast.

I really like EX Palen's idea about reporting ads. I'm pretty sure I saw one yesterday that wasn't appropriate. Like I said, most ads haven't been that bad here, though

I believe this works, bad ads should not even be a consideration, as it hurts the overall site experience, especially with the game room targeted for those with less than knowledable experience with emulation.

Boured : If my site experience isn't enjoyable because of ads, it's ignorant for me to assume that it'd be enjoyable for others. If I'm ever annoyed by something on the site, I try to fix it since I'm also an end user using the site just as much as anyone else. Sometimes it's bad to make decisions based on the end user perspective since it's not always financially logical but the user experience on the site has always been far more important to me than profits. There were many times in the past where I could have increased my profits by a significant amount but chose not to since it would have impacted too many people far too negatively. Unfortunately too many sites give in to greed and are littered with ads.

Pacman+Mariofan : I believe the site also has around 250 GB worth of images.

EX Palen : You mean a link from that ad block notification window?

Yeah, in the bottom part of that window, just below the last paragraph. Visually, I'd say it's possible by rearranging a bit the headers with no need to alter font size or anything, but I could be wrong.

I get the revenue drop from ads, but you have to be really careful with the big pop up windows. They're annoying and usually are a sign of a website not worth visiting. The messages that took place of ads were much less annoying.

It's a hard compromise to make, potentially more ad revenue with the likelihood guests will leave when they see it. I don't mind personally because I know the site, but when I go on other sights that make me turn ad blocker off, I always just leave. And with the inclusion of built in ad blockers into a lot of browsers, I just don't see a lot of people willing to turn it off.

Either way, I hope ad revenue can go up, I'm just not sure this is the way to go about it. But hey, a lot of other sites use the popup so I guess it has some positive effect.

I've only had problems with the ads here in like 2015 when they weren't appropriate, but I've used Opera with a built in ad blocker for years, so I kind of forgot the site even had ads. I guess I can figure out how to turn it off to see how it is.

I'd appreciate having these Detector Pop-Ups stop appearing if the User has purchased one of the Ad Blockers in the Vizzed Market with Viz, like I did. At least for me, these pop-ups feel a little redundant.

My goodness, that's a lot of space on the site of just images! I wonder how much space of images is held on average on social media websites LOL.

Barathemos : It shouldn't be all that bad. The only thing I've really had to get used to is the ads that go on the bottom of the page. I think those can be pretty easy to accidentally click on.

Barathemos : I really hate to say it but losing guests that use ad block actually helps the site. Just wanted to point that out. They don't contribute to the site in any way, they only contribute negatively. And such a very small number of them ever sign up and an even smaller number of those who sign up ever contribute to the site with content.

The other compromise here would be to add more ads to the site but that's not fair to those who don't use ad block. Something needs to change because I've been spending $100s of my own money due to the site revenue not covering server fees.

TouchMaster97 : They shouldn't be appearing for those who purchased that item. I'll have to look into that.

Vizzed.com is very expensive to keep alive! The Ads pay for the servers.

Vizzed has 3 TB worth of games and 1 TB worth of music.  This site is free to use but the ads barely pay for the monthly server fees.  If too many more people use ad block, the site cannot survive.

We prioritize the community over the site profits.  This is why we avoid using annoying (but high paying) ads like most other sites which include popups, obnoxious sounds and animations, malware, and other forms of intrusiveness.  We'll do our part to never resort to these types of ads, please do your part by helping support this site by adding Vizzed.com to your ad blocking whitelist.
