The latest entrant in Sony's "It Only Does Everything" ad campaign for the PS3 Slim suggests that if you fail to buy your family a PS3, your wife and kids will leave you for Sony Director Kevin Butler.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CTk5CNFhkN8&feature=player_embedded Have I mentioned that I love this ad campaign? there are bad advertisements and there are good advertisements, and these recent commercials for Sony's PS3 redesign fall squarely on the "good" end of the spectrum. Now, perhaps I'm reading too much into this. Perhaps hapless Aaron Howe (Desperate Father)'s failure to purchase his family a PlayStation 3 merely leads his children and wife to go spend time at Sony because it's so awesome there, and they'll return as soon as Howe gets with the program, but I'm not entirely sure. After all, was that puppy theirs to begin with, or is Sony "Family Activities Director" Kevin Butler wooing the man's wife with gifts like adorable slurp-tastic canines? There's definitely a chemistry there, for sure. Let this be a lesson to everyone out there in PS3-less-ville: Don't trust Kevin Butler. While this doesn't beat http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iOsgqG5OOlM&feature=player_embedded as the best ad of the week, it's certainly up there. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CTk5CNFhkN8&feature=player_embedded Have I mentioned that I love this ad campaign? there are bad advertisements and there are good advertisements, and these recent commercials for Sony's PS3 redesign fall squarely on the "good" end of the spectrum. The upcoming Pokemon Black & White will actually have differences between versions that go beyond the series' standard "different 'mons for different games" paradigm.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DGAM1eeEI90&feature=player_embedded Since the original Red & Blue games, different versions of the Pokemon titles have essentially been the same game with minor differences - you can catch certain Pokemon in one game that you cant in its twin. Growlithe may only be available in Red and Vulpix might only be in Blue, but other than that, the rest of the game is perfectly identical from beginning to end. Not so with Pokemon Black & White, it would seem. On the latest episode of Pokemon Sunday - you know, the Japanese TV show where grown men and women dress in absurd costumes to be slightly too enthusiastic about all things Pokemon - we learned a bit more about the upcoming games. We were introduced to the new rivals (of which there are two or three this time around), and it was revealed that Black and White wouldn't just have different Pokemon - but entirely different places to visit, as well. Where Pokemon Black has the Black City, Pokemon White has the more traditional-looking White Forest. It isn't exactly clear if the places will actually be different beyond a mere change in aesthetic, but they certainly don't look alike, even if they have similar layouts. I'd love to see the two locations have different Gyms, for one - one is ripe for a Dark-type gym, and the other would fit a Grass-type trainer nicely, don't you think? Unfortunately, seeing as how I don't speak a lick of Japanese other than what I've picked up from anime over the years, I can't make heads or tails from the rest of the video. The best I can come up with is that you'll be able to make your Pokemon take naps, and then your Pokemon can dream that they're battling and capturing other Pokemon, only it'll actually happen. So it's kind of like Nightmare on Elm Street in a way, only cuter. Which of the two versions are you leaning toward, so far? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DGAM1eeEI90&feature=player_embedded Since the original Red & Blue games, different versions of the Pokemon titles have essentially been the same game with minor differences - you can catch certain Pokemon in one game that you cant in its twin. Ever see a sequel come out that you think to yourself "why did this get a sequel?" if so what game was it? mine would be Kane and Lynch. Universally hated, and yet it got a sequel. Meanwhile back at the ranch we're still waiting on Beyond Good and Evil... |

If you weren't already excited for next week's StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty, this trailer might go a long way in changing your mind. Stop reading this and watch it right this instant.
So, I really, really wasn't intending on writing anything more about SC2 until the game was actually out, but then I saw this: Blizzard has been running a small viral promotion on the StarCraft II site asking gamers to join the Terran Dominion, and every would-be commander that joined and took the "Which unit are you?" quiz added another tally to the pile. As more and more gamers signed up, Blizzard released more SC2 goodies - concept art, propaganda posters, even audio logs - but for the most part, it was stuff that was "pretty cool, but not worth going crazy for." It seems that the developer was saving the best for last, though: At 100%, Blizzard released the above launch trailer, "Ghosts of the Past." And boy, was it worth the wait. Without giving too much away, I'll just say that the trailer covers both the series' past - Mengsk's betrayal of Kerrigan in the first game - and events to come in the upcoming sequel. Jim Raynor is a broken man, but even down-and-out heroes can find something worth fighting for. Yes, I'm a huge StarCraft fan so my opinion is biased. But cheesy dialogue aside - and it's the good cheesy, even - this trailer is just cool, and it just goes to show that even the standard SC2 game-engine cinematics will probably look almost as good as Blizzard's legendary pre-rendered clips. This is some stellar stuff, guys - holy crap. The game is actually coming out, and this trailer only makes the six-day wait that much harder. Maybe if I cryogenically freeze myself I'll be able to get to one of the midnight launch events sooner. link to vid here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C_E83GfWM-A&feature=player_embedded So, I really, really wasn't intending on writing anything more about SC2 until the game was actually out, but then I saw this: Blizzard has been running a small viral promotion on the StarCraft II site asking gamers to join the Terran Dominion, and every would-be commander that joined and took the "Which unit are you?" quiz added another tally to the pile. "Ever play a game good or bad that had a piss poor final boss? If so which game was it?
As for me I remember playing Bioshock killing the final boss using only my shotgun. It was so lame. Then Bioshock 2 game along and it didn't even have a final boss. Another game I remember was Mass effect's final boss which was nothing more then a metal frog jumping up the walls BUT Mass effect 2 redeemed itself with an epic final boss." Capcom's David Reeves thinks that 2012 will be an interesting year. Not apocalyptic per se, more console-tastic.
Capcom COO David Reeves believes that Microsoft and Sony will release new consoles within "two to three years". Reeves, who was CEO of SCE Europe until April last year, said that Kinect and Move were a shot in the arm for their respective consoles, but that new hardware was much closer than either platform holder was letting on. "Capcom is definitely going to embrace [motion controls] and just as the first-parties are doing, we see it as another blip before we come into the next cycle," Reeves said. "3D gaming is the same. Anything they can add to revive and pique interest in the games until we have another clash of the titans in two years time." Reeves insisted that his time at Sony hadn't given him any inside knowledge, but believes that all the console makers are planning for new technology. "All the first-parties have got to be working on something," he said. "You can be waiting a few extra months to implement something, but you've got to set a date to go with a certain chip at a certain point otherwise you're going to miss the key milestones." While he may regard Kinect and Move as a stop-gap, Reeves also thinks that embracing a wider demographic will pay dividends in the future: "If you look at the industry over the past five years and ask yourself where has the money been made, it's been made on Wii Fit, Brain Training, SingStar, even Guitar Hero ... Publishers don't want to give up their core values but they need to reach out to this wider market." New consoles in 2012 aren't outside the realms of possibility. A 6-7 year gap between hardware releases has been fairly typical over the last few generations, but Microsoft and Sony both seem to be taking a much longer view with this generation. Creating new consoles is an expensive business, and I'm not so sure that either company is particularly eager to jump into the fray again. "When Justin Bieber performs in front of sold-out crowds of teenage girls, he doesn't forget to bring his Kinect.
Microsoft seems to think that Justin Bieber fans are the perfect audience for Kinect. The furry-headed teen pop star has been promoting the device during the intro to his performances. In an apparent backstage video that was shown before Bieber began lip-syncing to auto-tuned music, we see Bieber's "crew" using Kinect to play Dance Central, where Kinect reads a player's movements and translates them to an Xbox Live avatar. Bieber, obviously off doing something way cooler than playing videogames, wanders in and observes his "crew" playing the game and gets into it himself. The Bieb-ster then annoyingly hogs the 360 from the ten other people in the room to play a game of River Rush from Kinect Adventures, and becomes an achievement whore while losing all of the "friends" in his "crew." This is an inside look at what occurs regularly backstage at Bieber concerts. Mr. Bieb went on to appear in smoke and do a cover of a song laced with the chorus from The Cardigans' "Lovefool." I think we have confirmation that Microsoft is really going for a super casual audience for Kinect, because maybe I'm being ignorant, but most Justin Bieber fans probably don't own a 360 and aren't considered hardcore gamers. Or, could this be reverse psychology and an attempt to get hardcore gamers into Justin Bieber? It's worked on me: I already bought all of his albums and have them on repeat. Any 16-year-old that uses terms like "shorty" is cool with me.
