TRB_MetroidTeam : Congrats! That was no easy task especially on the difficulty you had it set to.

Congrats rcarter2! This game is pretty difficult to navigate smoothly especially when going for speed. Like you I'm teaching a pretty mad schedule right now, some summer break huh? I did not have time to learn this game but I will one day.

Davideo7 : Thanks! Sounds like a cool feature, I'm looking forward to it.

Great job ruanito. This game is pretty brutal. Scoring over 100k requires some serious skill and dedication but probably more than anything else is patience.

Similarly to Contra III, if you play on the easiest difficulty (practice mode) the game cycles back to the beginning automatically setting it to the hardest difficulty (professional mode). The points do not reset. This is pretty much required to get a score of 100K or more. Also, if you know how to manage your time (when checkpoints are which reset the timer) you can milk the clock a bit. However, this strategy can be quite risky and has ruined many of my previous highscore attempts. Anyway, this game is a solid port of a great but difficult arcade classic. Perhaps someone can finally beat the game in a highscore run. Good luck contestants!

TRB_MetroidTeam : The power up that makes you smaller also gives you two different projectiles that shoot at the same time. One shoots strait and the other is a homing projectile. This is pretty useful in many situations but I prefer the playing cards with the wider range.

The game does benefit those who are willing to change weapons all the time, 10K per weapon change. I tried this a few runs but I did a lot worse when not choosing my weapon of choice. There are many more of the small Zonk power ups so that would be the way to go, for points, until mastering all of the weapon types.

TRB_MetroidTeam : Thanks! I feel the same, good participation this month.

Picking the correct "Friend" in the game proved to be quite strategic. They vary in strength, range, and lag between projectiles. I found a few particularly useful for particular bosses. Speaking of which, the last phase of the last boss took a ridiculous amount of damage! I beat him with no lives left and consequently just avoided a heart attack.

Thanks TRB_MetroidTeam! And congrats to ruanito for a great run! I never played any version of Bomberman before this competition. I must say I am thoroughly impressed with the gameplay, level design, and sheer difficulty. I blew myself up so many times I lost count. I think my Zelda instincts worked against me at times making me stand a little to close to my bombs. What a blast!

petechavez325 : Previous scores do not count. They have to be accomplished within the month of the competition and they need video proof anyway. I'll be participating too. Good luck!

Unfortunate about those speedrun competitions. I always want to participate but my new teaching gig occupies a lot of my time. Once things settle down I'll be participating regularly. Sonic does make a great high score competition though. If this is like the other versions, max points goes to the fastest anyway. Alternatively, you can collect all the coins for a huge bonus as well.

nguyenminhthien86 : Even though it's not posting the time with high score submissions, your time can be found in the URL after tt (number of seconds). I'm assuming that will be used to declare the winner of multiple perfect scores.

This is a tough version of MS. Pac-Man. There are no bonus points (edibles) accessible for some reason until much later on. Also, there are many long paths that don't branch off making things pretty confined at times. I did like the challenge though.

rcarter2 :

I'm teaching anatomy and physiology (lecture and laboratory) at the college level. It's a pretty awesome gig to say the least. I love explaining things. Usually no one wants to hear me explain things but now they have to, lol. I do remember you saying something about teaching yourself. What do you teach?

rcarter2 : Thanks!

I was fairly surprised to say the least. I've been investing a lot of time trying to become a bit more competitive in 1st person shooters and I also started a teaching position. I began to worry about my retro gaming skills only to fail at finishing the last 2 competitions because I sprained my back pretty seriously. Things were looking pretty grim for a while but the 2 wins last month definitely cheered me up. Nice to be back.

I can't believe I actually got through "The Purple Jungle of Death" deathless and completely failed at the coconut game, lol. I honestly thought you beat me rcarter2, must have been an older video I saw on the game's page. Not sure if the coconut game can be broken down but I tend to be extremely lucky or terrible at it.

I actually wasn't going to max out the score either, lol. I wasn't sure if it could be done legitimately. When I failed to get a lot of points from the re-spawning guys in 4-1 I thought I was done for. Then I remembered, with a good amount of lives, you could eventually max out the score with the pre-boss of 4-3 without cheating. This is likely faster than using 3 re-spawning guys at a time I believe. Congrats again rcarter2!

Congrats nguyenminhthien86 and Linkums! What a battle. I actually wasn't going to compete until I found out how great this version of Sonic is.

I agree Sebrex. This game is tough and the ranks haven't changed for years before this competition, good job everyone! Galaga just gets more fun with practice. Can't wait to reach 200K and congrats to Kruzer for doing it first since Neal's epic run.

A strategy I've come up with involves using the emulator buttons (Reset, Pause, Close) as sort of reference points for where the enemies are going to spawn or where they are going to be in order to concentrate my fire there. I have a similar strategy for the arcade version but use the joystick as the reference point instead. This is particularly useful for the bonus rounds because they don't shoot back so you can hold your ideal positions. Also, you can double up your fire power by freeing one of your captured fighters but this is sacrificing defense for offense so beware. You'll need to strafe quickly and frequently with the double fighter technique.

rcarter2 : Game glitches definitely ruin the experience, especially at the end of a run (how cruel). Thanks for the strategy, always good to hear your take on things. I actually tried the snowman trick (entering and leaving a house while targeting the nearest one) but it wasn't that successful. However, it looks like it was mere random chance that many were empty when I tried and I should have attempted that strategy a bit more. Also, in a few runs while collecting ammo from all of the dispersed snowmen I actually couldn't get more charge for the sled which obviously kills any run. I definitely didn't figure out the weapon bonus. Should be fun to give it another go sometime.
