A lot of people have already named the heavy hitters on the NES, (i.e. Mike Tyson's Punch Out; Super Mario Bros.; etc.) so, I thought I'd name a few games from the original Nintendo that I believe are fun and fly under the radar:

1)  Super Spike Volleyball - (Easy mechanics to learn... tough to master.)

2)  Excitebike - (Sadly, the memory chip wasn't included in the game, but the track build mode was way, way, waaaay ahead of its time.)

3)  Life Force -  (Fun and pretty gross side scrolling space jet shooter.  Sweet power-ups.) 

4)  Hogan's Alley - (If you can get hold of a NES gun, get this game.  Very simple and a bit repetitive, but always gets my heart racing.)

5)  Blades of Steel - (Fast paced, arcade style hockey.  Great fighting.  "Take the pass!")

6)  Super Mario Brothers 2 - (Most underrated game of the series.  Much different than the others, with an all new cast of characters.)

Good stuff.  Also, I recommend doing a search of "Top 100 NES games" on Google or Bing, and going through the lists.

I keep trying to find a better reason to pick another game, but I can't.

"Grand Theft Auto III" is the first game I actually included in my plans for the day or week.  That has to mean something, as far as picking a favorite game of all time.

My favorite "back in the day" game would have to be "Grand Theft Auto III."  Honestly, I can't even guess how many hours I spent playing that game by myself and with friends.  It's certainly in the thousands.

Just as a tip, I recommend buying an NES controller and a USB adapter for your computer.

Not only does it make the controls much easier to handle on the NES games, it also gives a real feel for what it was like to play these games, back in the day.

BTW, Super Mario is still the king.  Nobody has made such an iconic video game character since.
