After going through a dark streak with anime, some that I can recommend include:

Higurashi no naku koro ni - was mentioned earlier, so I won't go into a lot of detail

Another - not far yet, but I know enough about it to say it is quite unnerving

Attack on Titan - a popular choice, not much else to say except hope you have a strong stomach

Elfen Lied - also mentioned earlier

Deadman Wonderland - lots of blood and insanity, another sickly addicting one

Umineko no naku koro - same type of anime as Higurashi, with a different setting

Mirai Nikki - stalkers who murder one another to become god? Careful with this one.

I know for a fact I only scratched the surface, but hope it helps anyways!

ive just started to watch between 3 different animes right now they are attack on titan which is pretty good if you like alot of gore, hakkenden which is kinda boring at first but picks up between the fourth and fifth episodes and mushibugyou which is kinda like inuyasha other than those you can try outlaw star or trigun for sci-fi animes

High school of the dead! It is a horror show about zombies.
It is a very serious anime full of action, gore and emotions. It is defiantly one of the best anime i have seen.

Serious: Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood, Hellsing

Funny/Weird: FLCL (fooly cooly if you can't find it by FLCL)

I've only seen the first of 6 episodes of FLCL, but I really liked it. FMA:B is fantastic; probably one of my favorite series ever, and Hellsing is also top notch. Crispin Freeman is awesome as Alucard. Both FMA and Hellsing have terrific dubs, so try to find those dubbed

Ok I'm giving you two titles that have girl in them but stay with me on this!

Hell Girl:  This is a serious horror anime where the main character grants death wishes.  She will bring evil souls to hell in the exchange that the wisher will come to hell when they die of natural causes.  I haven't seen the whole anime but from the first DVD I do highly suggest it!

Earth Girl Arjuna:  This is a more artsy anime about a girl learning about the sins of humanity and how to help change the world for the better.  Really serious, not much gore, and quite strange.  I did like it a lot though!  It makes you really think about your daily life!

If you're looking for serious anime you should definitely give Aku no Hana a look, read the manga first!

Wow this thread told me a lot about you guys. Mainly you don't watch a lot of anime. First suggestion um Attack on titan it is a fantasy world but it takes itself very serious. Also they kill half the cast in the matter of 5 episodes so if you like death watch it. I also have to say Durarara which is a weird series that takes itself serious give it a shot. Last but not least Code Geass. It is a psychological/mech/awesome anime?watch it the first?season is?utterly amazing.?
If your looking for something to make you say wow that was ok and just smile stupidly and feel good about like give GTO a look. For some reason this is like injecting a pain killer into my brain it gives me a kind of stupid high and it made me laugh like no other anime except for steins gate.
And if you want to look them up?for a synopsis of each since I am too lazy to?type one myself here is a link to the anime news network's? anime encyclopedia ?for your searching leisure also if you find an anime you like you can search it on that site a find similar anime.
