legacyme3: I learned the hard way you only check in at the 1 week mark with a thank you letter, and the 2 week mark for a check up. If they have not contacted you in a month, leave it alone. And the reason I brought up college credits is because of the starting rank and money you could get with joining the Army with a 4 year degree

Do what I did to get my current job, go to a temp service they'll place you at jobs then you can gain job skills.  I got hired in after about a year at the company i was placed at.  It's not much but it's a job and it'll put some money in your pocket.

As for supermarkets, I have 3 apps in at Market Basket in the past year, but they keep hiring older men and women. So I get the feeling they won't hire me for a while if ever.

There's your problem. You should have dropped off three apps in the past month. Those types of places really only hire whoever's on top. They don't look for who's best qualified, just who's first qualified. For most jobs, what thing1 said is correct, but trust me, for a super market, you need to be in there at least once every two weeks. Your grandma probably shops there anyway? Just go with her, and while she's shopping, ask to speak to a manager. Also you mention Market Basket, but what about Walmart? Food Lion?

And my grandmother has suggested the temp agency too. I could, but I would rather prefer something solid with set hours so I don't have to constantly sit on the phone waiting. In two years at the agency, dhe has had two total weeks of work. So its not a good track record.

Not sure who dhe is, but if he only had two total weeks of work in two years, he's doing it wrong. You need to go in there every day if need be (It doesn't bother them, unless you actively turn down jobs--in fact, they get paid for that!) and ask to see what's available. I went in to one and in two days had a 40 hour a week job. Granted, it was only for six weeks, but if I had wanted to stay on I probably could have been hired permenently. Yeah, temp agencies do permenent placement, too. And heck, don't say no to a day job. Experience is experience. If you say yes to a day job one day, and then the person you're temping for decides not to show up the next day either, you might have just found yourself a new full time job without even trying.

Also, don't ever answer with, "I'd rather not do that." Right now, if you want a job, you need to just take whatever comes your way. It's not like you get locked in for life.

Oh yeah, one more thing: Finding a job is a full time job in itself. If you're not spending eight hours a day doing it, you're not doing it right. Do this schedule faithfully and you will have a job in a month:

Monday: Investigation. Search Craigslist, the newspaper, (nearestbigcitytoyou)helpwanted.com, monster, your temp agency's website (if they have one) or wherever. If you find any postings, don't call them (Unless they say that is the only day they're accepting any calls). Do research. Go to the company's website (If they have one), check on their clientele. Research the industry. Run a google search for (ex) "sales job tips" or whatever. If the company didn't list a name to get into contact with (Often happens on craigslist) call the company in the afternoon and ask who is in charge of hiring. Don't speak to them yet, though.

Whatever you do, don't call Monday morning, businesses are busy and many won't take the time to talk to you.

You can sleep in a little bit, but make sure you at least spend five hours doing this. If you can't find enough leads to fill five hours, you need to look harder (Either for more leads or dig deeper into the companies)

Tuesday: 9-12: Refine your resume. Even if you have no actual job experience, you should still have a resume stating what you did in high school as far as sports, clubs, whatever. You know some HTML and CSS so you can put that on there. Look up "skill based resume" to see what you can do with little experience. If you can't think of enough skills to fill it up, you're only hurting yourself. If you think hard you can do it. (You can use your Vizzed experience, just say you were the grand poobah of a club though or something). Don't forget to write a nice cover letter, explaining how you found the job, why you think you're a good fit for the job, and what skills you have to offer that might be relevant.

1-5: Calls and visits. Don't show up to any place exactly at one (Unless you have a scheduled interview, of course--Make sure you're at least 30 minutes early!) because they'll be busy catching up from lunch. Go into super markets and ask to talk to the managers. Go into offices and speak to the receptionist. Most of the time they'll let you speak to a hiring authority, even if no jobs are available (Offices like to keep good candidates on record)

Wednesday: 9-12: Research again. Check the job boards, do everything all over again. Call places you've dropped apps off last week. If you've had an interview two weeks ago, call them, ask how the process is going.

1-5: Temp Agency & Resume. Go in there and ask them what positions are available. They might have just got something you'd be perfect for, and haven't posted it yet. You could get the job before anyone else. Also, these places generally have some sort of classes or tests you could be taking. Even if you've taken the typing test 100 times, take it again. Show them that you really want a job, and you're willing to do what it takes.

Thursday and Friday should be a repeat of Monday and Tuesday, however don't expect to get much done friday afternoon.

And of course, any time that you just can't fill (Maybe there were only two jobs posted this week in the whole city--it CAN happen, but shouldn't happen every week) then just volunteer somewhere. If you spent 10 hours that week looking for a job, then you need to do 30 hours of volunteer work. Go to a church, ask them if they need volunteers. Find the local food pantry, check craigslist's volunteer section. Go to the Elk's club, VFW, or Disabled Vetran's Association. Go to the fire house, schools, police station. The point is, you shouldn't be home between 9 and five, except to make calls.

Interviewing tips:

Dress for success (Lame, I know, but some people really don't know this--and I don't know how you dress)

This means black slacks, a full button-down shirt, with a muted color (soft blues are very good interview attire) and a, nice tie with no obnoxious patters (diagonal stripes, or like a cross-flair are okay, but no paisley or anything crazy). ALWAYS WEAR A TIE TO AN INTERVIEW. And get some nice shoes. Don't wear sneakers unless they're completely black and clean. Don't wear boots, either. Get some nice, leather shoes. They don't have to be shiny, they just need to be clean. You don't have to wear a suit jacket, but it can help.

The only exceptions to this are if you are applying for a hard labor job, such as a construction or garbage collection job. Then you can get by with some khakis (DO NOT EVER WEAR JEANS), clean boots, and a polo (Though I would still suggest the shirt above, but you can skip the tie)

Plan to arrive no later than 45 minutes early. This may sound like a lot, but it gives you time to be held up in traffic, or whatever you need, and still arrive with time to check your hair and teeth. If you need to be picked up for an interview, tell you need to be there 45 minutes early. So if you have a 2 PM interview, tell your ride it's at 1:15, and don't ever mention 2 until you're already there. They will invariably be late, and if you tell them 1:15, you will likely get there exactly at 1:15 if not later. Bring with you a comb, some gum and some floss, and if you're wearing black, a lint roller. Chew the gum while you're waiting, and about 30 mintues prior to your interview, check your hair (comb if necessary) and make sure there's nothing in your teeth. Walk in 20-15 minutes early. It shows punctuality. (You can go in earlier, but be prepared to wait)

Oh yeah, make sure you get plenty of sleep the night before. You don't want to go in with huge bags under your eyes.

Lazlo Falconi :

You sure? Sounds like I'm just going to annoy the s*** out of them.

Closest walmart is out of range until I have a license and a car and a steady job yo afford gas. What the f*** is food lion.

I don't ever say flat out no unless something is impossible (like jobs with driving requirements) or something that I'm sure I cannot do physically (like backbreaking labor. I've noted this in the past but I don't have s great back. Its not bad enough to get any compensation or anything for, but its bad enough that I know heavy labor would be a very bad idea since I am trying to look after my health)

Also, while I'm not saying no, I'm very much against volunteer work. One of the high schools I went to had required volunteer work as a grad requirement, and I instantly got turned off to the idea. It felt forced. At that time it was hardly voluntary. Why do I have a problem now? On top of it being unpaid, most of the time there's no one my age also volunteering, so I cant even just have fun with unpaid work. Plus senior citizens tend to piss me off with their s***ty stories about their s***ty grandchildren or cats. Or both. Time is money. If I have time to do unpaid work, I have time to do endlessly more productive things.

To interviews I wear under armor polos (striped but not obnoxiously do), tan khakis, and my running shoes. I don't have money for dress shoes, especially ones that look nice. I look healthy, and generally, while not the best attire, I dress the best I can within my means.

And I cant get rid of my bags. They are permanently burned onto my face from 6 years of basically no sleep from high school on. Insomnia sucks. Ans I've tried pills. Never doing that again.

But I'll take that schedule to heart and use it once the weathet is above 25 degrees. I have to generally walk where I want to go.

Hey man, excuses are like a**h***s. Everyone has one, and they all stink. You can say you can't afford new clothes, but a decent set of interview clothes should run you less than $50, I'm sure you can find that somewhere (You did after all get a Galaxy S3 from somewhere). And I don't believe your line about your back pain for a second. You were a runner in high school, the only reason your back hurts now is because your muscles have degenerated. Once you start working the pain will stop. And what the hell, they don't have a bus route where you live?

I'm very much against volunteer work.

Tough. You're also against being unemployed (Or so you say) but you keep doing that anyway. Boo hoo, you got burned in high school. You're not in high school anymore, but you are a 20 year old living in his grandma's house.

On top of it being unpaid

You're not unpaid. You're getting paid in experience. If you go to an employer with no work history, it shows that you're a lazy, self-serving little kid. If you go to an employer having been volunteering for the past year, you look like someone who wants to work, who's interested in more than just himself.

most of the time there's no one my age also volunteering

wtf is this s***? You're not here to have fun. You're here to do a job. By the way, you should listen to "old people's stories". Most of what I know comes from listening to people older than me.

If I have time to do unpaid work, I have time to do endlessly more productive things.

So do them. Go do these "endlessly more productive things", and make millions of dollars being productive. Start a company. What? You're not doing any of that? You're not even trying to do anything except play PS3 all day? Then get off your lazy ass and start working.

Your problem isn't that there are no jobs, your problem is that you're lazy. If you really wanted to work, and I mean REALLY wanted it, you'd be hired. Go to Goodwill, pick up a cheap suit, and get a job.

And by the way, if you come back with one excuse for anything I've posted here I'm closing this thread because clearly you do not want help.

Lazlo Falconi :

No, I actually have a bad back. I ran against the pain in high school because I assumed it would get better. I had assumed my lack of muscles were a cause, but as it turns out, most of the family has back issues. Its part of why I stopped running competitively. My back just won't allow it anymore.

I live inhickville, the closest known bus is a good 20 miles away. Well out of walking distance.

The phone was severely marked down and I had a lot of help with affording it. That same help is no longer available to me.

I do want to work, but I refuse getting shafted when it comes to pay. Yes, it's self serving, but that's me. I'm looking out for me. That doesn't make me a bad person, that just means I know I'm worth more than nothing an hour. Its not wrong to want what you are worth.

And I am trying. Unfortunately, living in a hick mountain town, with no jobs or the ability to check surrounding towns means I'm left with few options. One of those options is to walk 20 miles to and from to find a job. The problem is that I would look like s*** applying for the job. And I have a good feeling that would end poorly.

These are not excuses. These are valid reasons. I'm trying to explain my difficulty but so far you keep passing them off as excuses. To be fair, yes, not wanting no pay is an excuse, but it's a perfectly valid one. I dont see why my thread should be closed on that premise.

If I didnt want a job, why would I post this thread? That's awfully counter productive and would prove to be an endlessly pointless waste of time. If I wanted to waste time I'd be "sitting on my lazy ass playing ps3 all day" not asking people who have work experience for help in my situation. A lot of the suggestions in this thread have been good, but a lot of them either go against my principles (ie volunteer work) or are out of reach (ie walmart).

I live in an area with limited jobs where most people around me have experience. I have a massive disadvantage and amtrying to beat it.

I give you the same advice my unemployment office told me. Send a thousand application anywhere and if you dont first succede, try and try 10000 times again (and show proof that youd did).

Have you worked before? Can you give some kind of a resume or CV? They like those.

As for more head on advice, though I am not sure if it works there since I live in another country. Try the local post office. Atleast here they always hire for graveyard shifts.
