I don't know... If alot of people left the city that I'm in, I would go to Costco and close up the steel doors. I would also make quick runs to K-Mart for guns. If not many people left the city, I would try to find a nice place in the middle of nowhere to stay away from the zombies. I would try to get a silenced 9 mm, alot of ammo, and a nice quality hunting knife. And maybe a crossbow if I had the chance (probably wouldn't though)... I wouldn't do anything rash like burn them with gasoline, which I would save. Eventually, (if you want to look at the idea of zombies logically) the zombies would rot and all of the survivors would create a new world, and everything would go back to normal.

My plan is quite simple. Gather my steel bat and axe, grab bottled water and plenty of tinned food (with a tin opener of course), meet up with friends (yes we've already planned this XD), head to West Orchards (our local shopping center), head to 2nd floor and clear out the zombies, destroy the stairs and set the escalators to move downwards, find a way to close shutters that leads to outside from that floor, finally repeat the process with upper floors, only heading out when we need something. Boom, pow, bang, lets do the damn thang!

I would try and find a boat to go to a island. (Since zombies can't cross water)
And build a house with all the supplies.
I'd bring food there, as much as I can.
And survive until the army will send a evac.
I will contact them while on the island if possible.
So there is not a 100% my plan will work, but it is worth the try.

I would hide. Because I'm good at hiding.

Or, of course, since zombies don't like water, I could get a massive bag and fill it up with stolen goods from Wal-Mart (hey, it's a zombie breakout, no one's going to care if you steal from a store). Then, I could get myself a giant sailboat and ride it into the middle of a lap pool. Yep, I'll be living inside of a water park

Mobouis1 : All you can really do is try to hunker down for about two weeks and hope you'll have enough supplies. (The reason being: In the early days of infection there will be more people than zombies. Isn't that good? You may ask.... no. All of those people would be fighting... and killing for supplies. Therefore if you wanted to go get supplies and didn't think of this you would most likely die.) Then, I would go to a area of low population. (Like a small town.) In that area of low population there may still be some decent supplies, and few zombies. Next, I would try to find at least three survivors, build relationships with them etc. Next, gather as many supplies as possible, (anything can come in handy) and hunker down again for as long as possible. (If supplies aren't sufficient to support four people for a year, which I a sure they wouldn't be, I would continue to travel to other smaller towns, collecting scraps and hunkering down. I would continue this process hoping for the best until a year passed. (The reason being: all of the corpses would rot away enough to not be mobile in that time.) That is my plan. I am happy I was able to explain this to those of you that wouldn't know what to do. By the way, I love everything zombie related! Amazing thread.

Well first off this is in my mind-I would die on the first day, maybe hour. But in my mind, I would get to the Cadets Training School and arm myself with a rifle, then gather a group of people I know and trust and run to ASDA(English equivalent to Wal-Mart). Hide on the top floor and send some speedy guy downstairs to gather food and all that until we eventually die.

Phase 1 (Environmental Awareness / Area Usage): Where ever I'm at when this starts, I will use whatever is close by as a melee weapon. Even try and combine weapons. Don't have nails or barb wire, I'll use tacks or something till I get some. Then, head towards the gun store.
Phase 2 (Almost Unlimited Ammo): Now hopefully there's still some guns left. Only guns I would need are pistols and Uzis. Might try and grab Assault Rifles. Better yet, A Saw off too. Actually Pistols, Uzis, and Shotguns for outdoor fights, and Assault Rifles for the fortify spots.
Phase 3 (Delicious and/or Healthy): Would rush to the closest Walmart, and grab a couple snacks and chicken. While I'm at it, I'll try and find others around that time to join my camp.
Phase 4: (Friend Or Foe): Only people in my camp would be mostly college educated graduates because I ain't gonna waste time with Dee Dee Dees. Only gonna recruit between 3-5 others to help me in the fight. Maybe I might have a reformed ex-con to do some of the dirty work.
Phase 5: (It Ain't Stealing No More): This is where the ex-con comes in. With his past criminal history he could break into bank vaults, and steal as much money to start new lives elsewhere. Then, we go to a car lot to take a car or 2. While me and my camp fight off zombies, the ex-con tries to break into cars to hot wire them. We'll even make sure it's new cars because they're always full with the better gas and their economy is still new or try are hand for an electric car. Better yet, we'll get 2 cars just in case the gas guzzler runs out of gas, and take the electric car.
Phase 6: (Outnumbered): Now, before I leave, I would try and see to it that zombies don't leave the city. Good thing I live in a city that has lakes and creeks, but as for land, I'll call my cousin the next town over, and have him alert in his town that zombies minutes away. So combine with my camp, I'll have more strength in numbers with the other town keeping the zombies from getting into their town along with the other town in the other direction.
Phase 7: (New Land): Seeing as theirs a whole lot of damage, I ain't moving back their. Figure I would move to a different country after this, so just as soon as I get my cousin and his town along with the other town, the ex-con jacks a truck with a boat attach, get it in the water, and ride it to a non-infected city with an airport because the infection is still fresh, and fly to the UK.

1: (Supplies)  Get my backpack of supplies, and loot my house for everything (first aid kits, food<,ammo, etc) and loot my dads shed for tools
(misc stuff) Gameboy advance, ds, psp, ps vita

: (Clothing) Put on my survival attire (a pair of jeans, a short-sleeve t-shirt, a hoodie, hunting jacket,  boots and leather gloves, pack some spare clothing

3: (Weapons) Load my 20 gauge and pack the box of 100 bullets, if my parents are  dead I would take my dads pistol, get my great grandmas machete when I go to her house to find stuff but that's in another portion of my plan

4: (Friends) I know some friends who families have prepared for stuff like: "economical collapse" "war in America" "police state" etc, and I have some cousins who most likely wont go crazy so I might team with them, I will try to stay with whats left of family.

5: (Vehicles) one of my parents vehicles are home (truck and suburban) I will most likely take the truck

6: (Escape) I live in a small town which is in between 2 cities which are both 5 minutes away so I don't wanna be home when stuff gets worse in the cities  I wanna get out quick as possible so I will do a quick check in my house for stuff i may have not seen then get my metallica cd put it in my vehicles cd player turn the volume all the way up and go to my grandmas house which is in a farming area that is less populated and quiet

7: (Hunker down for a couple of weeks) my grandparents house will most likely be safe and so will they so i will barricade windows with spare firewood , keep extra entranced blocked off and just lay low for a couple of weeks

Cain Arcana: Mine isn't nearly as detailed as yours, but mine's definitely a start. I really liked your plan, by the way.

I've thought about this a lot since I started watching "The Walking Dead".

I'm separating my plan into a few parts: Food, Shelter, News, People, and Weapons.

Food and Water: Part 1

Food/Water are the hardest resources to find in a time like this. If I try going to an urban area, they're less prevalent, but I'll find other resources. If I go into the wilderness, I'm more likely to find these, but I'm losing the other supplies I can find in urban areas, so it's a trade off.

That having been said, my plan would logically end up in the wilderness, since food and water in urban areas would run out. My team would start off at the breakout of the infection raiding grocery stores and food stores for canned foods and non-perishables. We would take only enough to lavishly last two months.

Seed of different food plants would be taken in the thousands. Their potential is obvious.

Water bottles are the most crucial. The giant tanks used at offices would be taken by the strong-men of the group.

Of course, if others have the same idea and food is scare, we would start by raiding office buildings and abandoned schools for kitchens and vending machines. Ideally, there are enough restaurants and grocery stores to supply us with enough food.

A word of caution: spending too much time on food is a waste. I expect the first part of this mission to be done within a week. It's the quickest part but the most essential since it allows the team stay in urban areas long enough to get  the other supplies that we need.

Weapons

At the start, the team would be split up. The majority would go food hunting, but the law enforcement, soldiers, and weapon adept members would be finding and raiding weapon stocks. This raiding would start out at weapon stores but move on to abandoned residential areas quickly. Of course, places like police stations would be helpful too.

The weapons in question would be sledge-hammers and guns to break into areas and quickly kill large numbers of zombies in the city. Even more silent weapons (cross-bows) would be stock-piled for the eventual move to the wilderness.

Shelter and Other Supplies: Part 1

Now, the team would find a building that looks structurally strengthened, since who knows what amateurs would be trying to fly helicopters and airplanes to avoid the zombies.

The room with supplies would be on the first floor and preferably barricaded on all sides by concrete or brick, with only one side having glass. The best case scenario would be a large garage space for trucks.

The technicians would hot-wire some trucks and they would be parked facing the garage door. If it's not a garage, it would be vans facing the glass of the first floor. The supplies would be loaded onto the trucks as soon as possible. There would be, at most, two trucks. One truck or two vans would be enough to carry the materials.

The fuel for these trucks will be siphoned from others and two days will be dedicated for finding and storing as much gasoline as can fit on a truck (separated from the food). Of course there is a risk of explosion, but this risk is unavoidable.

There would also be two armed Group B (refer below) members guarding this area at all times. Shifts might require an "other" to be on watch, but there would be at least one Group B member watching at all times.

First-Aid and Medical

Pain-medications and other general pharmaceuticals would be raided from pharmacies, grocery stores, and abandoned residential areas. If it doesn't have a label, we don't take it.

These medicines would be kept under the supervision of two doctors and anyone with a drug problem will be left behind. It sounds harsh, but there can be no toleration for druggies during this survival situation.

Surgical equipment and nearly all first-aid kits would be taken. A few kits will be left behind for ethical and humanitarian reasons. These will also be kept under the supervision of the doctors. Boxes of gloves will be taken for use in medical emergencies or for possible use of dealing with zombie innards.

All anti-bacterial ointments will be taken for use before consumption or touching of shared food. This category includes Neosporin and Purell.

News

In order to keep in contact with other possible communities. All transceivers found will be stored.

An extremely fast sports car will be taken in order to scout ahead and possibly drive back into the urban areas later.

If news appears, the sports car driving with the transceivers might catch the signal and drive closer.

The Move

The first part of the plan is complete. One month after initial outbreak of Zombie virus is the approximated time.

First the quick car will drive out to distract the zombies and move in a different direction. The trucks will move the correct path and by pure speed the race-car will take a roundabout route to pass the trucks as the team leaves the city.

The team will move at least 50 miles away from the city into a very rural area, where very few zombies would roam.

An abandoned house in a field but near the forest will be the optimal location for the house.

Food and Water: Part 2

A lake nearby would only make water gathering much easier. All water would be boiled first unless it is freshwater.

While louder weapons will be kept operable for as long as possible, silent weapons will be the only ones in use.

If spring, the seeds will be planted but hunting will contain the majority of Group B and Group D members. If it is not spring, hunting will be the sole source of food. If a lake is found, fishing will become a dominant source of food as well.

All remaining canned foods and non-perishables will be stored safely and some buried in known places. They will only be for use in years of hardship.

Supplies Part 2

All parts of animals will be used. The bones can be fashioned into clubs for the "others" to wield and in preparation for the time where most arrows will be broken.

Finally, the herb expert will use specialized skills to find medicinal plants and plants that are edible. Before you ask where a such an expert would ever be found, I'll answer.

At the start, the herb expert will download all relevant files and print them out and raid libraries for survival books. Over the course of the plan, the herb expert will self-educate itself and teach an "other" too.

This one person will describe the future courses of action and inform others of actions on premeditated scenarios. (S)he is a genius, keeping all needed information in his mind. He will take one "other" and try to teach all that (s)he knows.
- 8 law enforcement, soldiers, and weapon experts = Group B
These people are versatile and will serve as guards, watchmen, raiders, ammo counters, and hunters. They could definitely survive alone, but they need the safety of their family and enjoy the idea of doctors helping with wounds.
- 2 automobile technicians
These are not always "technicians" per se. Some of them may have been bad  people before the apocalypse. However, if these hot-wirers are good of heart, they will be recruited. The second any fishy business is seen, punishment or exile is imminent.
- 4 strong-men = Group D
These men are often only husbands or singles who work out a lot. Their specialization is only strength and they have to do the most manual labor. They have joined for the safety of their families and availability of a doctor.
- Other women, children, and men that need help (no more than 25% of the group willingly, but will succumb to human emotion and help others when feasible) -- Includes families of specialized members
The families. They do their fair share of work, but the primary concern is keeping them safe.
- 2 doctors
These doctors have decided to join the group to help their families and others. They are the most highly respected other than the mastermind.
- 1 herb expert
A self-educated person who might be insulted for the little work (s)he does at first. It is not until the group is in the wilderness that they realize how important this plant expert really is.

Now, I will discuss possible scenarios that have not been mentioned earlier.

Scenario 1: Zombie invasion of Original Shelter

The scariest and most possible reason for early death. Zombies start invading the original shelter. One wrong move and we're all dead.

The Original Shelter is a sanctuary during the chaotic first few weeks of zombie apocalypse. However, it has its safety hazards.

There are many groups doing their own thing during the first week. This means that there are several coming and going and a few zombies may hear the noise of cars and follow.

Or worse, they're right outside the garage door or window.

There are two possible actions. Only one will be right and the other will lead to death.

1.1 Moving
Everyone will escape the building through a different exit and find a new sanctuary. Valuable time and resources will be lost if the zombies have been able to invade the trucks.

Death is not imminent, but highly likely.

1.2 Waiting
All Zombies that enter are shot and distraction techniques are used to try to move them away from the building. They could either stay attacking the building (meaning you're screwed if you stayed) or move onto the other building.

This plan allows for supplies to be easily kept and less time wasted. However, it's much more likely that the Zombies keep attacking and eventually enter.

Death is not imminent, but highly likely.

Scenario 2: Urban Return

Some supplies are running out. A return to an urban area is needed.

In this scenario, the fast car with a technician, Group B, and the "other" driving will travel along the road and stop at cars. All gas will be siphoned and all helpful materials from within each car will be salvaged.

Several trips will be taken to ensure enough gasoline is stored in the trunk of the fast car and a second car will be taken and driven back to the base. This car will be large, optimally a van.

All unnecessary stuff will be removed from the van and gasoline, weapons, and first aid kits will be added. A group B member, a strong-man, and a technician will take the car together down the urban area.

They will use all available tricks once the urban area to stay alive and take all necessary materials. All outcomes cannot be premeditated, so it will be up to intuition and luck.

But after all, survival is luck.

Scenario 3: The Second Move

The possibly that a zombie horde finds the new house is minimal but chance enough is cause to worry.

Most of the supplies will be left on the truck, beside the house. If one of the strong-men or Group B watchmen for the house sees many zombies approaching in the distance, a prepared response will be taken.

One expendable "other" will be dispatched to warn others in the wilderness.

All supplies outside of the trucks will be put back in and the technicians will start them after filling with gasoline.

Arrows will be fired to kill zombies that are too close until only 1/2 of remaining arrows are left. Once this point is reached, guns will be used. This will give a final alert to those still in the forest.

These guns will be used until 1/2 of ammo is left and the trucks and fast car will leave.

They will drive 20 miles due North of their position. Since all team members will be taught the orientation of the compass relative to the house, any left behind will have a solid chance of rejoining the group. For two weeks the group will remain at this position, sending scouting trips in a roundabout fashion to find any who were left behind.

After two weeks, the fast car will be used to scout another residence farther north. Instructions to reach this place will be left on a sign at the point of the trucks giving further chance to rejoin the group once lost.

The new residence will replace the old one and the community will start over. It will be a harsher existence but at least the team has survived.

Scenario 4 The Cure

On one of the scouting missions, the fast car picks up the transceiver and finds out that an anti-viral drug has been found that stops the zombie virus the car immediately informs back to base camp with a transceiver and proceeds to cautiously approach the base of the callers.

If the cure is real and has started to be mass produced, then most worries are gone and within a few years life will almost be normal again.
(I want to end on a happy outcome)

Well I would move out in to a deserted area with animals and fresh water. I would bring family and friends. We would make weapons out of stone incase they ever found us.
